Copenhagen tips please

We (me, dh and 3 teen DC) are spending 5 days in Copenhagen in July.

Any tips on where to stay? Prefer a hotel with breakfast (to force DC to get up 😄) but also happy to look at air b n b places - best parts of city or anywhere to avoid?

If anyone has stayed anywhere nice they'd recommend would love to know.

Also one DC desperate to go to a beach for the day. There appear to be several within easy reach but not sure what else around them, which best to head for.

Any other must see or go things you would recommend? Happy with some general sightseeing but also be good to have some definite activities planned.

Thanks for any info you can share

We stayed last year in Next House Copenhagen- a hostel, well-located by the Tivoli Gardens. Funky roof bar, young atmosphere. Breakfast was fine. We took a family room but for five you might want two rooms. The rooms aren't massive but we didn't spend long in them tbh.
Copenhagen was lovely, I hope you have a good time.

We stayed at the Imperial Hotel https://www.booking.com/Share-rq5UUwY
Not a family - two adult friends. But it was clean, quiet, well priced for us (we did a BA holiday deal). It was close to train stations, easy walking to the main sites. Plenty of restaurants nearby.
If you like museums and sights I'd fully recommend getting a copenhagen card - it saved us lots of money and meant we could dip in and out if places. Best museum by far (and good for kids as very interactive) was The Danish Resistance museum. Also a day trip on the train to Helsingør is well worth it. Can't help about beaches I'm afraid.

★★★★ Imperial Hotel, Copenhagen, Denmark

Featuring a fitness centre and free WiFi, Imperial Hotel is set in Copenhagen, 200 metres from Tivoli Gardens and Copenhagen Central Station.

My favourite ‘proper’ beach is Amager Beach Park - super easy to get to on the metro and lots on.

Also if it’s warm enough, make sure to go swimming in the harbour baths! It’s such a nice way to relax after sightseeing - or we’ve even been known to go for a dip between museums. Islands Brygge is particular cool, but all the havnebadet are great - and free!!

I would definitely plan on doing Tivoli Gardens, Rosenborg Castle and at least some of the city centre museums. If you wanted a trip out of the city, I really recommend the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.

If you like water based activities - rent a boat, we like FriendShips at Christianshavn. Great way to see the sights and just a lot of fun.

Whats your budget for accommodation?

Absalon Hotel is meant to be good value for money. Manon Les Suites has a pool which can be a plus. Copenhagen Strand is popular with larger families because they are very happy to do interconnecting rooms.

BrighterLater · 19/05/2024 21:12

Fab thanks, will look at both places..

And put resistance museum on list.

Fingers crossed for a Copenhagen beach lover to come along now...

We stayed at Hotel Ansgar which is very centrally located for Tivoli Gardens, the train station, buses. We walked most places though. Great buffer breakfast too.

Thank you for advice - googling like crazy here now.

Happy to keep receiving tips though.

I live in Copenhagen, Amager is the closest and it's a decent beach. If you are willing to go a little further out, Klampenborg has a beach on one side and a deer park that is very beautiful on the other side, and actually has the worlds oldest amusement park in it. Worth spending an afternoon I think!

You don't have to avoid areas choosing your hotel. Copenhagen is a safe city. We relocated to here from UK. Feel free to ask questions.

We went 5 years ago and found it to be extremely expensive.

Yes, we were balancing cost of being there with fact flights there are about £700 less than to anywhere else we could fly to on our very limited dates but not expecting to be able to live it up too much when we are there.

Copenhagen card is good value as it also includes transport costs. We ended up seeing a lot of random museums and attractions just because they were included.

Hotel Bethel is fab - right on Nyhavn and incredibly reasonably priced considering location. Quieter than I expected too (in a non-canal facing room) I'm back there next month!

Canal tour is a must - Netto boats (little white ticket office halfway along Nyhavn) are cheaper but imo Stromma (the one at the end with all the flags) are better - the guides feel less scripted. Be warned on rainy days the water levels can rise too high to get under the bridges.

If you walk to see the little mermaid (she really IS little) have a walk around Kastellet as well - it's free and very peaceful, hard to believe you're only 20 minutes out of the centre!

Round Tower is wonderful - only 40kr a ticket if I remeber rightly, really unique spiral walkway going up and the view from the top is great. The library hall usually has an exhibit of some sort. The church in Christianshavn has an even better view but the trade off is 400+ stairs!

Helsingor/Kronborg Castle is a great day out, especially going down underground to see Holger the Dane.

My family in the UK who visit me yearly say that because of the cost of living crisis in the UK Denmark does not feel that expensive anymore, so you may find the same

Sunnnybunny72 · 29/05/2024 11:17

Check the opening times for Tivoli. We went at New Year one year but not sure it's open all year round.

WinkyTinky · 29/05/2024 11:22

We stayed in Malmo and nipped over the bridge to Copenhagen to visit during the day. The hotels in Malmo were much cheaper and that was a nice place to explore too. Double holiday!

That would be a nice surprise - although I am still adjusting to the new prices here so expect Copenhagen will feel pricey whatever

We stayed in an air bnb flat about 5 mins train ride out of the very centre, saved money on food and had a lovely garden. Excellent public transport.

the bakeries were amazing! Delicious bread, rye, tarts, pastries, so many!

we also went to a food hall type place with lots of choice of hot and cold food.

Planning to do this in reverse one day, so DC can add another country to their list (at their ages I had only been to France - they feel deprived not to have left Europe yet 😄)

@Civilservant don't suppose you remember the name of the food hall place?

Crikeyalmighty · 30/05/2024 19:28

@orzo15 I 2nd a trip to Bakken- you have a double whammy there a great white sand beach and the worlds oldest amusement park (set in woods) within 5 minutes walk of each other - the train goes there - you get off at Klampenborg

Amager beach park is good- cafes and often a DJ in the summer

Hotel wise 'wake up ' hostel is good and funky - the one near the centre. Denmarks hostels are really not what you think of as hostels at the better end!

We lived there for 20 months.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/05/2024 19:28

I miss it so much!!

Rshard · 30/05/2024 19:35

Copenhagen is a fab city, we went in February but would love to visit again in the summer.

We stayed at NH Collection Copenhagen which was lovely. We breakfasted at Gröd, which does amazing porridge, a branch very close to the hotel. Also one at TorvehallerneKBH which I’d recommend for lots of lovely food options and some cute little shops.

Fab bakeries all over the place.

BearSoFair · 30/05/2024 21:49

I'm not the poster who mentioned the food hall but I would hazard a guess that it was Torvehallerne at Norreport - you're truly spoilt for choice!

Civilservant · 31/05/2024 07:28

Thank you, @BearSoFair that’s the one!
