Copenhagen tips please

We (me, dh and 3 teen DC) are spending 5 days in Copenhagen in July.

Any tips on where to stay? Prefer a hotel with breakfast (to force DC to get up 😄) but also happy to look at air b n b places - best parts of city or anywhere to avoid?

If anyone has stayed anywhere nice they'd recommend would love to know.

Also one DC desperate to go to a beach for the day. There appear to be several within easy reach but not sure what else around them, which best to head for.

Any other must see or go things you would recommend? Happy with some general sightseeing but also be good to have some definite activities planned.

Thanks for any info you can share

In the summer there is also Reffen, a big outdoor food market which has a brilliant vibe, often has music on, and you can get the ferry there which goes past the opera house so its a nice activity in itself

Thank you all for these tips. Getting excited about our trip now!

@BrighterLater I second Reffen too and Torvehallen- also really like Broens beer garden by the docks- over in christianshavn - music and great food stalls and affordable - fab vibe in the summer - the thread is making me nostalgic!!

We really enjoyed the zoo. And also the Carlsberg brewery (although that maybe less suitable for DC)

You will have a fab time, we went in October half term so it was a bit cold, would love to go again in the summer.

We stayed in the Scandic Spectrum, which included a decent buffet breakfast. Overlooking the river and 5 mins walk from Tivoli. Right by a bus stop from the airport. We got the Copenhagen card which includes transport and entrance to attractions which meant that we did lots of things we wouldn't have normally (eg Ripleys and Guinness world records, planetarium ) which the kids loved.

Loved Tivoli (Halloween when we went which was amazingly themed, the teens loved the rides and games esp Galoppen - watch the Travelman episode on Copenhagen) Rosenborg castle and the changing of the guard and the Crown Jewels, the round tower, boat trip and a wander around pretty Nyhavn.

Didn't find it outrageously expensive as we are used to London prices, but kept costs down eating at places like the Tivoli food market rather than sit down meals in a restaurant.

Recommend the food hall as others suggested and also to say that it felt safe whereever we were.

We did a bike tour - was the favourite bit of our trip. The guide was brilliant, lasted a full afternoon and we did it on the first day to get a feel for the city and got lots of recommendations from the guide en route.

Went with my adult DD in April:

  • it was freezing
  • very expensive to eat/drink out. We kept costs down by getting lunch and takeaway coffee from 7-11 shops
  • transport is efficient - we used metro, bus and train
  • also did lots of walking
  • we didn’t get the Copenhagen card - you would need to be going to lots of museums to make it worth your while.
  • canal trip from Nyvhan was really interesting, probably my favourite
  • Zoo was good
  • Rosenbourg palace good
  • Tivoli underwhelming
  • its very clean and people are friendly
  • enjoyed it but don’t need to go again.

Enjoy your trip .

Hot dogs with all the trimmings for lunch. Cheap, fast and tasty. Plus all the bakeries.

I enjoyed walking up the outside of this church spire - if you have a head for heights.

We stayed at the Absalon that someone has mentioned above and the breakfast was great!

Teamed with a pølse from a street vendor for lunch most days, that saved more budget for evening meals.

Depending on what you're planning to do look at the Copenhagen card, it worked out great value for us but we checked carefully what was included vs what we wanted to do. It probably inspired us to squeeze a few more things actually, to get even better value.

The street hot dogs are great by the way and cheap- remoulade , pickles, dry fry onions-

BrighterLater · 01/06/2024 20:36

What's it like for vegetarians?

Most of us v happy with a street hotdog for lunch but 1 DC is veggie.

The hot dog stand I went to near the Round Tower had a veggie version.
