Airb&b cancelled 🤷‍♀️ Need Canary Wharf holiday apartments help

I am really unfamiliar with London and asking for some help organising our stay please.

As it says on the title my friend booked holiday stay ages ago and the owner has just cancelled. I am quite sickened about it.

We need a flat around Canary Wharf area - this area has been selected as we thought it would be safe and convenient and we will be travelling with one 10 child after a friend recommended it.

The notification has just come through that the apartment is cancelled, no explanation, nothing.
Ive spent all day looking for an alternative but o have NO idea, I don’t know London at all.
Could anyone help please?

Dates are 24 July to 31 July. 2 adults one child.
As reasonable as possible, £1300 or under if possible.

An apartment will give us some space and be cheaper to do breakfast/lunches. Maybe two adjoining rooms in a hotel would work??

We just want to do the London touristy things, will be unfamiliar with tubes and so on too.

Any help please.

Canary Wharf isn’t convenient if you want to do all of the touristy things in London. You won’t even feel like you’re staying in London! What are you planning to see?

cherryassam · 14/05/2024 12:53

I would also agree that Canary Wharf wouldn’t be my choice. What are your plans?

South Kensington is great for the museums, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, feels very safe.

Revelatio · 14/05/2024 12:53

How about this? You can pretty much to walk to all the sites you’ll want to see and it’s a much area. Even has some outdoor space so you can eat outdoors some evenings in the hopefully sunny weather.

if you plan to head out for the day around rush hour, definitely avoid Canary Wharf, the tubes will be a nightmare. There are much better, more convenient locations that are equally safe but closer to the action.

Mindymomo · 14/05/2024 12:56

We stayed at Radisson Blue and had a one bed apartment, kids slept on sofa bed in lounge. Easy to reach Docklands railway.

InTheRainOnATrain · 14/05/2024 12:56

Don’t stay in Canary Wharf? It’s the investment banking area with a ton of chain shops and confusingly linked underground shopping centres. Not awful as a place to work but it’s soulless and you’ll be trekking on a packed tube with all the commuters to do tourist stuff if you’re there midweek. I can’t see that you’d actually break up a sightseeing day to go all the way back there to have a cheap lunch in a flat either as it’d take you ages. I’d get a premier inn somewhere central if you want clean and basic.

Springtimeserenite · 14/05/2024 13:06

Thank you so much for the advice.

Please would you link any suggestions as I don’t know London at all.

I disagree, the river boat will be your friend from Canary Wharf pier. You'll be able to go almost anywhere! Malthouse terrace one stop up is also a good option - lived and worked in the area for many years so know it well.

The river boat is so expensive though! Well compared to the tube. And much slower. And infrequent. It’s a pleasant way to travel though, I will give you that!

Springtimeserenite · 14/05/2024 13:16

Truthfully I am in two minds about scrapping the whole thing but I’m trying not to be impulsive.

Can’t believe Airb&b can just cancel like that but I just didn’t know.

In terms of what we intend to do, my friend has meetings in the city while we are there. While she’s there I’ll be out few days alone with a 10 year old. We want to do a Wembley visit. The rest of the time it’s tourist things, I’ve seen a terrible history boat, art gallery, Tower of London, Houses of Parliament.

If anyone can please help it would be so appreciated

Ah Ok, if she has some meetings in the city I'd look around Tower Hill. Again the boat (day travel card is cheaper) and the dlr are both within walking distance. How much do you want to spend per night? Assuming it's two adults one child.

rockingbird · 14/05/2024 13:36

The Tower of London is a top place to visit, the history the beefeater's tour (free) provides is amazing! Beefy409 is on Facebook - we met him several times, he's very friendly and knowledgeable. The science museum is also very good, the science lab area for kids is great. Tate modern - fabulous building, always something going on in there.

The previous air bnb link looked good (if enough beds?)

Here’s another https://www.airbnb.com/slink/Wu9aGVv7
this one has several tube stations walkable so can access different bits of london easily, and it’s a nice residential area for restaurants shops, bit of green space etc. You’d get two bedrooms and a bathroom and share the sitting room/kitchen with the owner who sounds very helpful - might be useful for you to have this if you don’t know the city at all?

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 14/05/2024 13:42

The horrible history boat you mention @Springtimeserenite is really great

Thank you for commenting.
We’d look at up to £1300, a bit of wiggle room but ideally around a grand.

Around 140 to 180 (🫣) a night

What are your dates?

Springtimeserenite · 14/05/2024 13:54

Unfortunately this one hadn’t got our dates
24 July to 31 July. I appreciate you saying though. Funny you recognised it!
Am sitting ready to book just to get this out of my head 🫨

This one is way over budget

Thank you but I do think I’d prefer our own place. Very good of you to look

Premier Inn at County Hall on Southbank?

Your budget is low for Summer holiday season.

I work in Canary Wharf and while I love working there, staying there would be a pain for what you want to do. Plus if your friends meetings are in the City as in The Square Mile you'd also be in the wrong place. There is a Travelodge near Liverpool Street that might work.

Same, but it’s a very expensive way to travel nowadays, sadly

msbevvy · 14/05/2024 14:02

Canary wharf is indeed safe and very convenient for lots of places. The Jubilee line will get you to Wembley or Westminster, the DLR to the Tower of London and the Elizabeth line gets you to Oxford street in about 15 mins.
You can also get the boat to nearby Greenwich and various other places along the river.
