I'm getting surgery there this week, and I have to pay with cash. Will £4,000 have to be declared? I've searched the internet, but different websites tell me different things. I'll also be taking spending money which will be in the lira🙂

I don't think there's a limit, but I suppose there's a chance you'll be asked why you're carrying so much cash. Have your appointment details and any correspondence re cash payment handy.

beetr00 · 10/05/2024 15:38

@Cathyhon there's no limit on entry. Hope surgery goes well 💐

You’re having surgery with someone who wants to be paid cash in hand?! You’re a braver woman than me!

Genuinely, you are bonkers. Do not do this.

That's the bit that stood out for me.

Why cash? If all is above board they'd be happy for a transaction that leaves a trail and take card payment.

This! You are mad to do this.

If you survive the experience no doubt the nhs will end up picking up the tab to sort out whatever mess is made.

Vermin · 10/05/2024 16:20

why do you think he wants cash in hand? Think through the trail of what you’re having done and why they might benefit from having no trace of having done it. And then reconsider.

AlltheFs · 10/05/2024 16:20

Jesus.
What on earth are you thinking?!
Presumably you’ll then be taking up NHS resources when you return from this shit show with an infection or worse.

Do not do this. Use your brain.

Cathyhon · 10/05/2024 16:21

Guys I’ll be fine, I know a lot of people who have had the same surgery with this particular group/surgeon

Cash in hand? Like a dodgy tradesperson?! Are they even qualified?

Please don't do this.

notanotherrokabag · 10/05/2024 16:23

Good luck
As a GP I see a lot of people.post surgery in Turkey.
Not in a good way.....

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 10/05/2024 16:24

Rather you than me.

Cathyhon · 10/05/2024 16:25

I did pay a deposit fee, a bank transfer that was. They are a qualified doctor x

There's always plenty of successes but there are always ones which don't go so well.
If something dreadful did happen, do you think the potential benefit is worth it?

In Turkey they want cash as it costs them a huge amount to process cards transactions. Between 10-20% of the cost is added on top for cards. You CAN pay by card in the hostel but it will costs you a lot more.

I agree with you! It's not a major procedure or anything like that, but I've been wanting it done now for a really long time, and the positives outweigh the negatives.

What are you having done? No one has dared to ask! I’m nosey enough to!

Bunnyhopskip · 10/05/2024 16:28

I refuse to even pay a builder in the u.k cash in hand, let alone for something as major as this! Abroad. This is a major red flag op. If something goes wrong they could deny all knowledge of you even being one of their patients. Hope it's nothing major surgery wise...

Vermin · 10/05/2024 16:38

Have you asked if you can pay by bank xfer (you bear the charge) rather than card?

PickledPurplePickle · 10/05/2024 16:38

Cathyhon · 10/05/2024 16:10

This is a massive red flag - don't have surgery with someone who wants cash in hand
