AIBU to book these seats on a flight?

We've got row 7A&C seats booked on our upcoming 4hr flight, the middle seat is blocked off and we always use it to put our DS(nearly 2) in after take-off and before landing.

We often get the first row and it really makes a massive difference when travelling with DS: the extra space at the bulkhead is invaluable for him, and to keep him contained to not bother other passengers.

We didn't manage to book early enough this time, however according to the seat map 1C&F are empty (usually just blocked for the comfort of the Gold member seated in the other seat), these usually open up just before the flight.

So: am I being unreasonable to move us to the empty seats in the front row and hope/expect 1A or 1D to move so that we can sit together? They'll still have their aisle/window and won't have to sit next to a baby, so I think it's win-win..

Not to drip feed, I'm also 5 months pregnant, so anything to make things more comfortable really.

YABU: Stay in you're current seats and let the fancy Gold members keep the empty seat next to them!

YANBU: It doesn't make any difference to them and will make your journey more comfortable (and probably everyone elses as DS will have more room to be contained)

Not sure why people are so irate at the mere prospect of being asked.
If I was booked in the front window seat on the left and was asked to move to the front window seat on the right of course I would...it would make no difference to me, I'd still get the window seat and the extra leg room.

You're completely entitled to book those 2 seats not next to each other. If I then arrived with you there with the baby and you asked if I wanted to swap so I wouldn't be next to the baby I'd feel as if you were doing me the favour tbh!.

Given you've clarified that you wouldn't expect anyone to move for any reason and it's just an ask, and you'd be fine if they didn't move, then of course you're not being unreasonable.

Solely in the context of the OPs post and their suggested plan If is BA mainline Club Europe (OPs gone so we don’t know for certain) you shouldn’t end up sat literally next to the baby, there should be a blocked seat between you and the OP plus infant.

Just to update, when we checked in only 1A was occupied so we actually ended up with the seats we wanted (1D and 1F) and technically 1C too. And we didn't have to ask anyone to do anything. Don't you love a happy ending? 😊

YABU, unless you really WANT to be in the Daily Mail!

Congratulations, you made the daily mail.

Also YABU and would get short shrift from me if you tried this

Glad it worked out for you.

Fab, enjoy the trip!

That's great. Taking a bashing on the daily mail though.

I read the article. I don't think it was clear that OP would be paying for front row seats, and would be asking others to move to like for like seats. Lots of the comments refer to OP wanting something without paying for it, or not appreciating that the alternative seat was the same level.

Similarly to this thread, there seems to be a vast amount of misunderstanding.

WestEndWindy · 11/05/2024 11:18

Glad you got sorted OP. Lots of people misunderstanding and over-inflating what you were asking. That's a claim to fame ending up with a Daily Fail bashing!

Nah, I know it's water under the bridge now but in reality there were a few here who actually did understand the initial deal and exactly what was being suggested by the OP in the OP....eyebrows were raised for valid reasons.

Anyhow I'm glad it all seems to have resolved before boarding.

iamrageohtheresakitty · 11/05/2024 15:21

Everyone quoted in the article did have the wrong end of the stick though!

Or they fully understood that they were being asked politely to move to an equivalent seat, and therefore were being petty AF.

Looking at it I can't see how it makes any difference to them what side they sit on so I would give it a try.

I book a window seat on the non-sunny side of the plane so it would make a difference to me which side it's on.

(If I'm flying eastwards in the northern hemisphere e.g. UK to Europe, I will choose seat A, and so on.)
