AIBU to book these seats on a flight?

We've got row 7A&C seats booked on our upcoming 4hr flight, the middle seat is blocked off and we always use it to put our DS(nearly 2) in after take-off and before landing.

We often get the first row and it really makes a massive difference when travelling with DS: the extra space at the bulkhead is invaluable for him, and to keep him contained to not bother other passengers.

We didn't manage to book early enough this time, however according to the seat map 1C&F are empty (usually just blocked for the comfort of the Gold member seated in the other seat), these usually open up just before the flight.

So: am I being unreasonable to move us to the empty seats in the front row and hope/expect 1A or 1D to move so that we can sit together? They'll still have their aisle/window and won't have to sit next to a baby, so I think it's win-win..

Not to drip feed, I'm also 5 months pregnant, so anything to make things more comfortable really.

YABU: Stay in you're current seats and let the fancy Gold members keep the empty seat next to them!

YANBU: It doesn't make any difference to them and will make your journey more comfortable (and probably everyone elses as DS will have more room to be contained)

Also if they don't move don't think you can use the blocked off seat for the child. That seat is shared space between 1a and c and if you did that I'd be extremely annoyed you'd occupied it.

Yep.

I’d also not ‘expect’ or even ‘hope’ someone would move if they’ve booked a particular seat in Club / Business.

You should be able to adequately parent a nearly 2 yr old between the two of you in Row 7 for 4 hrs.

Would you be happy not to live and also not to use the middle seat for your DC as you wouldn’t be able to use that seat for them if the other person doesn’t want to move.

Not living might be a bit excessive.

If the seats were like for like, I’d definitely move rather than sit between a couple / next to a baby. Both would be really annoying scenarios.

Deekaytwo · 07/05/2024 20:20

No, of course I wouldn't put my child in the blocked seat between myself and a stranger on a flight. That's the only negative factor I'm really considering as regards moving us forward.

If I was travelling alone in 1A or 1D I would move to 1C or 1F if I was going to lose the empty other seat anyway, which is why I'm considering it myself.

I appreciate people have their reasons for selecting specific seats and that would be a risk I'd have to take. Again, I'm not sure why everyone assumes the worst possible behaviour, I was just planning to take my seat, ask politely if anyone wanted to swap and if not just enjoy the flight with a (non-alcoholic) beverage.

YABU, unless you really WANT to be in the Daily Mail!

Changingplace · 07/05/2024 20:21

When I travel we book the bulk head seats for medical reasons, no I would not move irrelevant of what the reasons. We reserve them early, we pay a premium, you didn’t do the same, not my problem you can’t deal with your own child on a flight.

ThreeB · 07/05/2024 20:22

The middle seat in BA Club Europe isn't a usable seat though so you wouldn't be able to pop your DC in it.

VeraForever · 07/05/2024 20:23

You'd be relying on people who may have booked and paid for their seats.
I wouldn't swap with you .

SavingTheBestTillLast · 07/05/2024 20:25

It’s not OK to base your plans on relying on other people giving up their seat for you.

also agree with @thaegumathteth if you asked me I’d feel bad all the flight ( I chose seats based on safety location within the plane ) It’s just so unfair and rude putting people in that position.

TraitorsGate · 07/05/2024 20:26

Am I dim or are there only 2 seats each side, where is the middle blocked off seat or is that on different flights. The 1a and 1d is a business class window seat, that's what people have paid for.

Mismatchedfootballsox · 07/05/2024 20:28

When we have flown BA club recently the middle aisle is not a seat you can use. It has a permanent fixed base, which would be impossible to seat a toddler on and be extremely annoying for the person in the row behind if you attempted it.
For this reason I think you should assume tote toddler will need to remain on your lap the entire flight, or book the toddler their own seat.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 07/05/2024 20:29

I’ve found a pic of what they do with the middle seat. It looks like there’s a tray on it.

The seat map doesn't show the middle seat because you can't book it, but business class has a seat there that is blocked for the use of the passengers either side.

"..the middle seat is blocked off and we always use it to put our DS(nearly 2) in after take-off and before landing."

This will be our 5th flight with our DC, the table comes off and the lovely staff help us to seat our little one in it.

It's the fact that refusing you class as the worst possible behaviour!! They selected and paid for their seats. It's obviously important to them. You are taking the piss assuming having a small child trumps them.

I shall bow out. Thanks for all your comments (even those of you who haven't read the OP). I'll take it all on board 🙏🏻

Ah so.it really is you sneakily booking this to get a free business class sear for the dc?

The entitlement of some people is just mind blowing!

If the club cabin isn't sold out then those seats may not open up on check in anyway. One of the perks of Gold is that you get an empty seat next to you where space allows.

longdistanceclaraclara · 07/05/2024 21:54

Not a chance . I book the seats I want.

Reminds me of the nightmare mother and her kid (and MIL if I recall) who caused mayhem on our return flight from Majorca last year. Demanding she wanted the front row seats because her child blah blah blah.

Why they weren't offloaded I don't know. Six people had to move from seats they had paid a premium for, and the flight was delayed by 70 minutes because of her antics.

That's outrageous! I'm usually happy to accommodate families as I never pay for a seat but if I had paid £60 or whatever the going rate is for a particular premium seat there is no way I would move unless I was financially compensated. And even then, given the situation you describe above, I think I would refuse on principle!

WhoopDereItIzz · 07/05/2024 22:19

FWIW, if you asked nicely I’d move. It’s a like for like seat. Not a big deal (to me, clearly it’s MASSIVE to many on MN 🤣).

Yabu to expect other people to give up their booked seats for you.
