February short break. Malaga?

pharmachameleon · 28/04/2024 08:51

We are thinking about a short 3 day break in Europe in February just DH and me. We would be flying from Glasgow so are really limited with the areas that airlines fly to at that time of year. We can fly to Malaga and wondered if anyone would recommend here for February? Is there enough to do for 3 nights?
I would like to go to Seville however it's another bus then two hour train ride from Malaga airport so I think that's out for us unfortunately. Thanks.

I haven’t been but from what I’ve heard it sounds nice. It has an old town etc.

pharmachameleon · 28/04/2024 09:03

Yes I've heard it is nice too. I'll do a bit more research and see how I get on. Thanks

It's a lovely city. We did a guided food tour and really enjoyed it - we went in April and had lovely weather, not sure what it's like in Feb. You can get the train or bus to other places if you fancy a change of scenery, we went to Nerja one day, and did some long walks up the coast.

Clearinguptheclutter · 28/04/2024 09:07

its definitely a nice town. I just don’t think you can guarantee nice weather. That said I have been to that area one January and it was absolutely glorious, we had coats on but were sitting outside having wine in the sun. You could also consider going to Granada - I think 90 minute drive from Malaga. It’s wonderful.

takemeawayagain · 28/04/2024 09:07

Malaga is nice, in Feb you might get lucky with the weather or you might not. There's enough to do for a long weekend IMO.

Mandarinaduck · 28/04/2024 09:09

There is plenty to do in Malaga. Lots of museums, historic sites, music, art. We went for a week in February and didn’t get bored. We had warn enough weather on one day to take a bracing dip in the sea. Mostly it was mild with bright sun.
i didn’t particularly fall in love with it but it was pleasant enough.

KohlaParasaurus · 28/04/2024 09:11

Yes, Málaga would be a good choice. The weather is likely to be better than the UK (though the area had a very wet spell in March this year, impacting the processions) and there's plenty of walking, sightseeing and good eating places within the city as well as a nice stretch of coastline. If Seville is where you really want to go, the logistics of onward travel from Málaga aren't complicated.

Decorhate · 28/04/2024 09:14

I think the weather should be fine (maybe not beach weather though). I was in Valencia in February this year & it was lovely & Malaga is further south.

pharmachameleon · 28/04/2024 09:16

Thanks all. I know we'll be taking a chance with the weather but hopefully it'll be nicer than Scotland in February!

I went in November and it was really nice weather, I also took a day trip to Séville (which was hot!) on the renfe train from the city centre, it was quite easy. From memory it was about an hour I think.

Radiatorvalves · 03/05/2024 16:04

I got drenched once in Malaga in Feb. Taxi driver joked about it being the Costa del Agua (not Sol), but it cheered up the next day.

Sunnnybunny72 · 03/05/2024 16:17

We went in Feb once, it was glorious. Sat on the beach.
Seville btw, is wonderful.

Nap1983 · 03/05/2024 16:37

I would highly recommend Malaga! Me and DH went last Feb, weather was great about 20 during day wee bit chilli at night. Loads to do and see and very reasonably priced for a city break once your there…

pharmachameleon · 03/05/2024 17:24

Thanks ever. Glad to hear there may be a slight chance of sunshine 🤞

We went to Malaga this February and it was lovely , one day of rain the rest sun, not hot but t-shirt weather .

Kazeragi · 03/05/2024 17:53

Don't know about the weather, but Alicante is GREAT!

Iloveanicegarden · 03/05/2024 18:04

We went to Malaga in Feb for the first time and it was the start of our love affair with Spain. If you've a car Porto Banus is worth a day trip, as is Mijas in the hills. You've then got Seville, Granada, drive up to Sierra Nevada (or get a bus) to walk in snow if you're lucky. Nerja is also pretty. Have a lovely time. It was warmer than GB but still needed a coat.

quizzys · 03/05/2024 18:15

As a pp said, getting to Seville from Malaga is very easy and doesn't take too long either for the distance involved. I suppose it all depends on the time you have and whether you want to bother or not.

Anyway you simply take the train in the airport station and get off at Maria Zambrano station (or take a taxi to that station). Then get the train direct to Seville Santa Justa in two hours using the Renfe Avant service (fast train).

Alternatively I can 100% recommend a day trip to Cordoba which goes from Malaga Zambrano as above, and only takes an hour. An absolutely charming little city with plenty to see and do.

Malaga itself is great though, so you might just want to stick around there. Weather unpredictable though, but it doesn't rain in a tapas bar lol 😉

@quizzys thanks. I would love to go to Seville and Cordoba.

Whatever you decide have a great time. There's nothing nicer than a trip outside your own country, no matter the weather!

Pack light, use a backpack if you can, then hopping on and off trains is a doddle. I have ditched the overhead bags now for city breaks and just use an underseat backpack that has wheels if needed when I get knackered lol. It's amazing what you DON'T need! It's a cabin max metz hybrid BTW. Great little bag.

I'm older now in mid 60s and still get a thrill travelling somewhere different! Enjoy yourself.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/05/2024 00:26

Malaga is a good base for a weekend break in February. If you want to explore further afield you could get the train to Cordoba (about an hour) or along the coast to the west - but should be plenty to do for 3 days.

Weather - have been in that area in February the last 3 years - 2024 and 2022 were both glorious (tee shirt and shorts) but 2023 we had some torrential rain.

ColourByNumbers88 · 12/05/2024 22:09

Málaga is a great city and plenty to offer for a 3 day break. But you can fly direct to Seville from Edinburgh if that's where you really want to go.

pharmachameleon · 13/05/2024 08:24

@ColourByNumbers88 not in February unfortunately. We would need to stop off in Heathrow which seems a bit of a faff for 3 nights.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/05/2024 10:32

Yes Seville via Malaga would be probably be easier and cheaper than via Heathrow from Edinburgh. If that's what you wanted to do, you could get a taxi from Malaga airport to the Maria Zambrano station (or there is a connecting local train ) and then its two hours to Seville - but would depend on timing of your flight as to connection.

pharmachameleon · 13/05/2024 11:51

Good to know @ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea I'll bear that in mind thanks.
