Ryanair free cabin bag tips recommendations

Anyone any recommendations for a bag suitable for flying with ryanair? The bag needs to fit under the seat and be 40x20x25.

Also any tips on how to pack light would be great as I'm a terrible overpacker 😂 going to Spain for 4 days and will have access to a washing machine.

Easy Hey were checking bag sizes last week ( Athens to Gatwick) and caught loads of people. Most had small rucksacks but were stuffed to full they didn't squeeze into the measuring thing

Easy Jet! I've bought a mini hard case on wheels that fits RA and EJ and it stops me overfilling as I got fined once before for thinking I had the correct size hold-all but , the nice packed, it morphed into the wrong shape.
For my trips it's about £100 extra to take a larger bag. If I need something more I just buy it at my destination as much cheaper.

  1. Plan what you intend to wear each day before you go.
  2. The above but choose stuff you can mix and match if you need to.
  3. The above but noting that if you change for the evening you aren't wearing the same thing all day, so may be able to wear things more than once.
  4. Roll your clothes when you pack. Don't fold. Rolling is more efficient on space.
  5. Consider your footwear carefully when flying. Don't take boots or do take boots and wear them on the flight.
  6. For four days, you need comfortable shoes, sandals and one pair of heels MAX. If you can combine sandals with heels or comfortable shoes with sandals you are on a winner.
  7. If you intend to take a book, carry it in your hand onto the plane. Then you don't have to pack it.
  8. If you want a jumper wear it on the plane. Hell wear two jumpers cos the plane will either be effing freezing or you can take it off once you are on the plane and it doesn't need to be in your bag.
  9. Consider your toiletries carefully. You can buy there if need be. Shops exist outside the uk.
  10. Do you REALLY need to take a hairdrier? If you have access to a washing machine, I suspect there will be one where you are staying.
  11. Other than clothes and toiletries do you REALLY need anything else?
  12. You need space in your bag on the outgoing trip - cos hell you are going to want to go shopping - if this isn't an incentive to pack light nothing else will work.
  13. If you need a towel take a travel towel.
  14. Its not a disaster if you have to wear something twice. No one will notice or care apart from you unless you are really stinky.

I have a Hybrid Cabin Max Metz like this one. It has wheels!

Metz 20L Hybrid - 40x20x25cm – Cabin Max

It holds a heck of a lot more than you think, and it's great for a few days on its own, or as a backpack in addition to the 10kg bag for the overhead. I pack light and use it for city breaks. Don't have to pay for a seat or an overhead bag either.

My biggest tip for packing light is to wear your most comfortable shoes/trainers. They will get you anywhere unless you are having dinner in the Ritz or something. Throw in a pair of spa slippers and that leaves tons of space for (uncrushable) stuff.

No more panic or stress worrying about finding a spot for the overhead, and more importantly trying to heave it up or get it down! Admittedly it's ideal only for a few days really but it's great.

Metz 20L Hybrid - 40x20x25cm

Flies free on Ryanair. The perfect size (40x25x20cm) for Ryanair’s new ‘free’ underseat cabin luggage rules. Hand luggage compatible with ALL other major airlines. Use as a trolley or a backpack thanks to useful hybrid design. Pack more than you think...

A sarong can be used as a scarf on a cold flight, as an evening shawl and even as a beach bag (Japanese furoshiki method).
There should be soap and shampoo/shower gel at your hotel. If not, buy it from a local supermarket.

(MN doesn’t like this one)
Take some old worn-out clothes and chuck them once dirty. I take an old T-shirt as pjs and threadbare socks. That way you have room for souvenirs on the way back!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/05/2024 10:11

Just be careful on the sizing as there are two different sizes - one for the 10kg cabin bag (55x40x20) and another for the "small bag that must fit under your seat" (40x20x25)

For the 10kg cabin bag I can recommend the CabinMax bags we've got 2 and they are really roomy and you can use the outer straps to compress it all once packed.

For the 'small bag' we've recently bought two of these and they are excellent.

Obviously you can't really use both together as they're backpacks but thought I'd share both so you can decide!

We bought a couple of these based on this thread! We’ve done a dry run with what we’re planning on taking (using packing cubes) and these bags are like a tardis!

Just updating as we’re on holiday now-these bags are BRILLIANT! Plenty space (I actually could have fitted more in) for everything, and enough pockets to be organised but not so many that you forget which one your passport’s in!

LaurieLeecountry · 16/05/2024 10:13

I have just bought two rucksacks from Next specially for Ryanair. Cabin Max. Then found they don’t even look at your bags anyway! Same with EasyJet.

Insidelaurashead · 16/05/2024 13:17

I do two week trips with carry on only. For 4 days in Spain I'd travel in light trousers and a comfortable pair of trainers, pack a second pair of light trousers and a pair of sandals that are dressy enough for evening, comfy enough for daytime. Pack one or two dresses, a pair of shorts, and three different tops. Usual mini toiletries, minimal makeup, a kindle, avoid a hairdryer if there's one in the hotel, done

Jeezitneverends · 16/05/2024 13:21

@Insidelaurashead iI’ve also done this for years, but this is “micro” carryon that you don’t get charged for -for the Holliday I’m on I was going to be charged almost £100 for a 10kg carryon!

BurnerName1 · 16/05/2024 13:24

You're wise because they are checking frequently at the minute!

They certainly checked us on EasyJet to Jersey and more recently Venice.

LaurieLeecountry · 16/05/2024 17:13

That’s useful to know as I have been thinking of returning the bags.

Jeezitneverends · 16/05/2024 17:24

There was no one in our “pleb” queue with bags which looked like they were bigger than the “permitted” size so I didn’t see any get measures, but at the gate they made quite a show of wheeling out the bag sizer thing, and there were several recorded announcements about oversize bags being charged for and being put in the hold.

Im that person who’d be caught and made an example of though so I always comply with stuff like this!

Didn't check anyone from Copenhagen on my return flight last week. That's the first time in a while. Always been on return flights to the UK though never from the UK.

However I may have been rather warm on that flight.
