Go on one "big" (10+k) holiday or 4-5 "smaller" holidays over a period of a year?

ahoyhoyhoy · 23/04/2024 15:10

It depends what the smaller holidays were, but probably 1 big holiday. Although I’ve not been on holiday since before COVID so I’d take anything 😅

OldTinHat · 23/04/2024 15:12

I'd take one small holiday and refurb my bathroom with the rest!

FestivalFun · 23/04/2024 17:23

Option C

one 4-5k holiday and a couple of 2.5/3k holidays.

vincettenoir · 23/04/2024 17:43

4 or 5 smaller holidays.

NisekoWhistler · 23/04/2024 17:44

4-5 small ones

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/04/2024 17:46

Depends on the holidays. I’m not a city break sort of person so would rather a more expensive holiday all inclusive somewhere lovely.

I’d choose a 10k Disney world holiday every time. A 10k road trip around Australia isn’t for me.

Heatherbell1978 · 23/04/2024 17:46

Really depends. £10k max is our annual holiday budget (family of 4) and next year we'll get 3 holidays out of that - ideally we'd like to do 2 a year. But in 4 years time we want to do a 'big' holiday and planning to use most of the budget on one long-haul.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/04/2024 17:47

Depends what the 'big' holiday is. Two months travelling around China, yes. Disney, no.

Very few things are worth 10k+ for a week or two. Law of diminishing returns.

See this is the issue OP. I'm the opposite to this. In every way.

But they are both perfectly good choices. You have to know what you'd prefer!

4 or 5 small.

Do different cultures and different seasons.

Also depends if it's you alone, as a couple, with a friend or a family.

Notateacheranymore · 23/04/2024 17:55

10k is our once in a lifetime holiday budget, which we did last year. Coast to Coast Canada for our 25th wedding anniversary.

The rest of the time we have an annual budget of less than 5k. We do a mix of 2 wks abroad as MiL and SiLs live in Lanzarote and breaks in the UK of places that interest us historically or otherwise. Still loads of places to go yet.

ArcticBells · 23/04/2024 18:00

Definitely depends on how nice the smaller holidays are. I'd probably choose one good one

elevens24 · 23/04/2024 18:04

10k got us a ski holiday, week in canaries, week AI in turkey, centre parcs weekend and a city break. 2 adults 1dc. A mixture of medium and small trips. I love holidays so u wouldn't blow my whole budget on one big 2 week trip.

Go on one .

Decorhate · 23/04/2024 18:26

Multiple smaller ones. This is partly because when our kids were younger we did holidays that they would enjoy whereas we like city breaks (especially coastal cities) so we are making up for lost time now. Also I don’t like it too hot so a 2 week holiday in the sun would not suit me. We do tend to have a 2/3 week holiday in the summer too but not somewhere hot.

reluctantbrit · 23/04/2024 18:36

One bigger one and one smaller one.

I prefer to have at least one big break per year. That can be two weeks Germany or Scandinavia, it doesn’t have to be AI in Spain.

If time permits we do a week in October to soak up some sun but this year it’s a week May half-term in France.

I'm with you @MrsTerryPratchett !

It's not my dilemma.
I was chatting to a friend and they are doing the one big holiday (and yes, you're all correct it's Florida Disney 😄)
whereas we are the ones who are doing the 4-5 smaller ones.
Yes I know, everyone's different, and each to their own, just wanted to see how others feel about it.

I absolutely agree.
Travelling is one of our luxuries and blowing the budget for 2 weeks seems a bit of a waste.
We are lucky enough to go on each school holiday, and half the fun is the discussing, choosing and planning the trips with the DCs.
They've flown as a babes in arms so are very seasoned travellers and seem to have the wanderlust too!

More cheaper holidays.

I could never blow my holiday budget on one holiday in case it didn't live up to expectations. Even worse, people who save for a couple of years for one special holiday . A lot of pressure to enjoy yourself!

Scarletttulips · 23/04/2024 23:44

We’ve done Disney and it was by far the best and most talked about holiday they’ve ever had. You have to do it at least once!

Do 3 smaller trips and save for a big one every 4 years.

homezookeeper · 24/04/2024 01:01

One big! Couldn’t cope with several a year with the planning of everything. Too many pets here for that anyway!

My issue is that I want at least the same standard in accomodation I have at home, especially when I go self-catering. So enough bedrooms, not sleeping on sofa beds, dishwasher, washing machine, a nice looking house. That always means it's more expensive.

The same for a hotel, I don't want basic, I want comfort.

But we then only do really big holidays every couple of years, we mix it up with self-catering in not-so-typical tourist areas.

I had a colleague who always chose low cost and each time came back and was disappointed. I think it can go both ways.

HelenHywater · 24/04/2024 07:56

I wouldn't spend £10k on one holiday. I'm happy to do more budget accomodation so I can have more holidays or longer on one holiday. Am going to Japan this year but won't be staying high end at all - hopefully will spend less than £5k

I'd never spend money on a Disney trip.

ZenNudist · 24/04/2024 07:58

I tend to go on 3 5k holidays a year and a £1k short break. I don't want to go on super cheap holidays.

I have been to disney too and spent way more than £10k but made other trips in the year too. Think we did a few more UK breaks tho.
