Which non UK city for a mini break?

Hey lovely MN and seasoned travellers. I would like to take my lovely daughter (22) away for a mini break this summer but I don't know where. We both love:
Drinking coffee and watching the world go by..
Flea markets and vintage stores..
Some sun but not oppressive heat..
History, churches, wandering around nooks and crannies and old cobbled streets
Eating out!
My first thought is Paris ( I have been but many years ago). Seville sounds gorgeous and the place Ive heard/read the most rave reviews about.
Any suggestions would be very gratefully received...Blush

Amsterdam or Paris with the Eurostar.

I really loved my trip to Amsterdam :). Lots to see, you can do a boat trip around the city and they have plenty of museums, cafes and wonderful pancakes to have with your coffee!

Paris does have great cafes and flea markets and lovely food.

I came on to say Seville.
Also, Munich or Nuremberg

Aworldofmyown · 19/04/2024 10:02

Budapest

Don’t know about flea markets but we thoroughly enjoyed our mini break to Tarragona. Roman history, beaches, old town, marina and new town shops. Nice and compact. Easy flight into Reus not far away

Krakow! Love this city.

When I read the things you were interested in doing, Amsterdam immediately came to mind.

Reason being:

  • coffee shops along the canals make for great people watching
  • they have the biggest flea market in Europe (just check your dates, I think its last Saturday of every month).
  • comfortable weather all year round, lovely in the summer
  • lots of history (the Oudekerk, Neuwekerk, Ann Frank house, Heineken tour, Rembrandt museum, Rijkmuseum...) there are also a lot of smaller quirky museums practically everywhere like the Torture museum and Ripley's Believe It Or Not experience.
  • GREAT food! Bitterballen, cheese shops on ever corner, all the cakes, pancakes, funnel cakes you can eat!
  • Definitely lots of old cobbled streets, and easy transport with the metro.

Amsterdam is so much more than what people associate it with (cannabis and the RLD).

Another vote for Amsterdam....so much more to it than "coffee shops".
Easy to get to...not too far....

Ooh I love these suggestions.. thank you!! Amsterdam hadn't figured in any of my potential places so that info is really useful Smile

Another vote for Amsterdam here. It'd meet all your requirements and is the most amazing city. It's also the friendliest place I've ever been.

It'd be wise to avoid Paris this summer because of all the disruption that'll be caused by the Olympics.

stickybear · 19/04/2024 10:25

Seville is gorgeous but I'd avoid it in the summer if you don't want too much heat. We went in October and it was still well over 30 degrees every day! Amsterdam is a good idea, or maybe Bruges for somewhere a bit smaller? Or Florence? Could still be a bit hot I suppose!

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 19/04/2024 10:25

@TreesAtSea hadn't thought of that.. thank you Smile

Seconding Krakow

40andlovelife · 19/04/2024 10:27

Prague is lovely amazing food, sights etc

Pottingup · 19/04/2024 10:27

Budapest is really nice in that you can do everything you’ve listed and also go to the thermal spa baths in the city.

Grad22 · 19/04/2024 10:28

Would strongly recommend Antwerp. Can get the Eurostar via Brussels, great vintage shops and extremely safe feelings and clean. Like the nice bits of London without the crowds and grime.

LongCareerOfNearMisses · 19/04/2024 10:29

Copenhagen or Stockholm?

CCLCECSC · 19/04/2024 10:30

Malaga

Mitsky · 19/04/2024 10:30

Lisbon or Copenhagen

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/04/2024 10:44

If you don't want oppressive heat, then I wouldn't plan Seville during the summer, as it can be very hot. I've been to several Spanish cities (Valencia, Granada, Malaga, Cordoba, Palma) and whilst I have loved them all, I wouldn't going during the summer.

I think Northern Europe is your best bet for being able to wander around comfortably during summer months .

abbs1 · 19/04/2024 10:55

Florence is absolutely beautiful! I went with my husband before Covid and really want to go again.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 19/04/2024 11:18

Amsterdam is great but the weather can be awful. I’ve been 4 times over 30
years and it’s rained every time.

bestbefore · 19/04/2024 11:19

Krakow. Lovely city with lots to do as well as lots of cafes etc

LadyGAgain · 19/04/2024 11:21

Bruges

Caledoniablue · 19/04/2024 11:30

Lisbon is beautiful and ticks your boxes however I'd avoid during the summer as it can get pretty hot

Amsterdam

cassiatwenty · 19/04/2024 11:38

Nice and Budapest are really nice. However it might be a tad hot there this summer, so perhaps Ghent and/or Hamburg might work better?
