Which non UK city for a mini break?

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 19/04/2024 09:25

Hey lovely MN and seasoned travellers. I would like to take my lovely daughter (22) away for a mini break this summer but I don't know where. We both love:
Drinking coffee and watching the world go by..
Flea markets and vintage stores..
Some sun but not oppressive heat..
History, churches, wandering around nooks and crannies and old cobbled streets
Eating out!
My first thought is Paris ( I have been but many years ago). Seville sounds gorgeous and the place Ive heard/read the most rave reviews about.
Any suggestions would be very gratefully received...Blush

I would say pretty much every European city will fit your criteria.

However, I think it's worth chekcing in with her - I find young people (as did I, when young) have a bit of a priority list of where they want to go, as they've experienced less than we have. So I might not particularly want to go to Paris again, but my children who hadn't ever been DID, as it's very iconic. Also NYC, Berlin, Amsterdam etc. I find they're more likely to want to go to a capital than a smaller lesser known city (even though IMO, those smaller cities often give the much better experience).

Have a wonderful time!

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. Temperatures could play a big part in the decision I think so Amsterdam fits the bill for that. @EmmaStone that's a very thoughtful response, thank you. She is an absolute delight and would really appreciate a trip just about anywhere. I'm actually thinking of springing it on her as a surprise as she's had such a rough time lately. As in, hey you're busy with me next weekend. Bring your passport, kinda thing.

My husband and I went to Bruges a few weeks ago and it was lovely! Would recommend. Lots of independent cafes (That's Toast was a highlight) and plenty of streets to walk round and history to see!

Also loved Krakow, Vienna and Munich!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/04/2024 13:09

Venice is wonderful for all those things.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/04/2024 13:10

Or Prague.

DonnasShrugaleros · 19/04/2024 13:38

Ghent or Antwerp

BIWI · 19/04/2024 13:40

Porto or Split have been two places we've been to recently, and we loved both.

CormorantStrikesBack · 19/04/2024 13:45

Ghent is beautiful and you can be in Bruges in 30 mins (ish) by train for a day trip.
also easy to get to. Eurostar to Lille and train to Ghent. I admit when we did it we were travelling via Lille for a few days so not sure if there’s a better route.

WhyDoesItAlways · 19/04/2024 13:45

Seconding or thirding prague. It's absolutely beautiful, food and people are lovely, loads of history, old streets with small shops in the old town and felt so safe walking about at night. Not sure about flea market but I'm sure they'll have something similar there.

BiggerBoat1 · 19/04/2024 13:49

Definitely Budapest.

ginasevern · 19/04/2024 14:10

Bologna is something a bit different. At least 3 large flea markets and plenty of vintage stores. Loads, I mean loads of beautiful churches, cobbled alleyways museums etc and food to die for and of course Italian coffee.

Venice is amazing but the canals don't smell the nicest in the summer!

Amsterdam is lovely and you can get there on Eurostar from London. The journey back isn't direct, you have to change somewhere I think, although that might have changed. The people are really friendly, the canals are amazing as is the architecture and the art. We stayed at The Pulitzer, which was incredible, brilliant friendly service, very comfortable and central. They have an old barge which you can book for a canal tour. Recommended, https://www.pulitzeramsterdam.com/en/

Book early for the Anne Frank house, it sells out quickly and there are limited tickets.

We also did a tour of a museum with an art historian who told us a lot about Van Gogh's history and family and took us around the paintings.

Have a lovely time! My daughter is the same age and would love this. I'm sorry your daughter has had a difficult time, it's a tough age I know.

Bordeaux - lovely to potter around, some great foodie markets and the Bassins des Lumieres is spectacular.

You could take a trip out to Arcachon at the seaside too, easy to get to by train.

reluctantbrit · 19/04/2024 14:59

Normally I would have said Florence but not in summer.

Amsterdam, Stockholm are lovely cities to spend a couple of days.

honeyfox · 19/04/2024 15:56

Ghent and Antwerp are beautiful.

I went to Girona last year and really liked it.

Maddy70 · 19/04/2024 16:01

Barcelona
Seville
Krakow
Brugge
Valencia

omnishambles · 19/04/2024 16:04

I would have said Nice but not in the summer.

Rebootnecessary · 19/04/2024 16:10

I went to Copenhagen with my 25year old dd earlier this year. We had the nicest time wandering the city and stopping for coffee and cinnamon buns at regular intervals.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 19/04/2024 16:54

I'm so glad I started this thread! So many great ideas and so many suggestions for places I'd never even thought of. Lots and lots of ideas to keep in my back pocket as well. @QueenofTheBorg thanks so much for all the info. I will check out the Pulitzer this evening! Yes it's tough for the youngsters nowadays. Life seemed a bit simpler for me when I was her age Confused

Another vote for Krakow. We came back two weeks ago. It would fit your brief with pavement cafes, cobbled streets, plenty of churches and lots of nooks to explore. We loved it and will definitely go back.

Ireallyshouldchangemyusername · 19/04/2024 19:25

Oh yeah to Girona and Bordeaux. Also Perpignan, Dresden and Lubeck

Havanananana · 19/04/2024 22:20

Krakow (again). Or a German city - was about to post Lubeck or Dresden, as the previous poster wrote. I'd add Bremen or Hamburg. Or Munich. Or Leipzig. Or Cologne. I like to avoid large capital cities with too many tourists and look for the #2 or #3 city in a country to get a more authentic feel of the country.

Copenhagen/Malmö is a nice two-city break - you can add Lund in Sweden to the visit, or Roskilde in Denmark (lots of Viking stuff) too.

CherryMaple · 19/04/2024 22:49

Brussels or Ghent.

Startingagainandagain · 19/04/2024 09:57

Amsterdam or Paris with the Eurostar.

I really loved my trip to Amsterdam :). Lots to see, you can do a boat trip around the city and they have plenty of museums, cafes and wonderful pancakes to have with your coffee!

Paris does have great cafes and flea markets and lovely food.

Agree Amsterdam and Bruges - do the canals.
