Going to Mallorca next week, where should I visit?

I'm going to Mallorca next week with my husband and toddler and we're staying in Port Soller and we've rented a car. Please could you share your recommendations of what we should do, see, eat? Either in Port Soller or anywhere else on the Island.

Never been to Mallorca before, very excited to check things out.

Thanks in advance!

Alcudia old town is very pretty .

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 16/04/2024 20:29

Caves of Drach

NooNakedJacuzziness · 16/04/2024 20:30

Take the tram to Soller, lovely little town

mumyes · 16/04/2024 20:31

Marking!!

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 16/04/2024 20:31

Deia and Valldemossa.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 16/04/2024 20:35

Sorry, it's a little wooden train, not a tram. Goes from Port Soller to Soller (and on to Palma I think)

RedKite20 · 16/04/2024 20:45

Deia beach is very nice, quite near you.
i found Deia ok but not much to see (except perhaps millionaire’s villas).
Tram to Soller, then change for exquisite narrow gauge railway to La Palma is really good.
Valdemossa, especially the old monastery, is lovely.
Have a great time!

Dreamycinemascape · 16/04/2024 21:08

Thanks everyone! I'm noting it all down.

Is Port pollensa or alcudia worth a visit?

We'll be in Mallorca for 5 days.

Placemarking as we are going in June! Staying in Cala Mendia on the East coast (I think!) which is quite near Caves Drach so we’ll definitely be doing that.

PensionPuzzle · 16/04/2024 21:19

Port de Soller is a lovely little place, lots of nice walking (and decent restaurants a few years ago too) just up in the hills if you fancy exploring. The tram into Soller is another day and then I'd definitely give one if not two days over to visiting Palma via the railway at least once. Lovely time of year to visit the island too 🙂

H0ghedge · 16/04/2024 21:19

You can get the tram one way to Palma and the bus back. It's marginally cheaper but gives you more flexibility in terms of when you come back (buses run until fairly late I think). I did this last month but the other way around. In Palma there are some nice art galleries if that's of interest. The castle is also great but I was glad I was child free (getting there involves lots of steps unless you get a tourist bus or taxi or drive there). The buses we went on (from Soller to Palma and around Palma) are really efficient and run regularly.

Ooh fab! Take a drive through the mountains to Formentor with a detour down the crazy hairpins to Sa Calobra. Pollensa and Alcudia have huge expanses of beach, but are big resorts. The old towns are nice enough to walk around but personally, I wouldn't pick them, if you've only got five days and a toddler.

Def the tram around the port - kids love it.

The caves at Drach and Arta are both good. The ones at Drach have some sort of dino park next to them now.

Turmerictolly · 16/04/2024 21:29

Palma is great with some nice tapas places as is Pollensa (old town). San Vincenz also a lovely place.

Sunbeam18 · 16/04/2024 21:59

Port de Soller is my favourite place in Mallorca, enjoy it! Deia and Valldemossa also lovely, as is Palma. For a trip of 5 days I'd largely enjoy Soller and Port de Soller though

Dreamycinemascape · 17/04/2024 07:34

Thanks everyone! In terms of the tram to soller and the train to palma and any buses, do you just pay when you go on or do you need a travel card of some sort?

Dreamycinemascape · 17/04/2024 07:40

We've also been recommended to do a day trip to Es Trenc beach. Would you recommend that too? From Soller it's a 70 minute drive so want to make sure it's worth it.

I was there last year and it depends on the bus company. IIRC there are 2 on the island - one accepts contactless card payment and the other doesn’t so you have to buy tickets. The bus from Palma to Soller used contactless.

I agree with this. Soller/Port Soller is quite isolated, so if you're only there 5 days, I'd stay local (the port and the town, Deia, Valldemossa) would nearly fill that and the only other thing I'd probably do would be to get the train to Palma for the day, and then the bus back like others have said.

I wouldn't bother going all the way to Pollensa or the east coast - I'd save that for another trip.

Yes, we got tripped up by similar. We went somewhere on a bus and I think it was card only so when we went elsewhere on a bus run by another company, that was cash only and we didn't have any Confused

I know Mallorca pretty well. First thing to note is that by staying in Port de Sóller you’re surrounded by mountains and committed to some quite challenging driving whichever direction you go. (There’s a big tunnel between Sóller and Palma.) The roads are fairly busy with lots of cyclists and probably coaches by now.
And secondly, five days isn’t a huge amount of time.
Definitely take the tram into Sóller, it’s a pleasant town to wander around and will have better range of shops. I’d also continue to Jardins d’Alfàfabia on other side of mountain but reachable by the Palma-Sóller train. (I think)
Deià and Valldemossa are v touristy. Personally, I’d go in other direction and head to Lluc monastery. Port de Pollença, further on, has a nice, wide beach in a big bay. I’d do a day here. Also nice beaches at Cala Sant Vicenç on the way.
I’d skip Sa Calobra (lots of difficult driving) and Alcúdia. Not sure if the caves are worth a visit with only five days to spare, I guess so. I’d probably book a meal somewhere nice but there are some good seafood restaurants In Port de Sóller too.
I’d probably also explore Palma’s old town and the area around the cathedral. It’s fun wandering through the alleys and seeing the hidden courtyards.

Tib buses which cover most of the island are all contactless tap on and remember to tap off. Use the same debit card for all adults travelling as each the more travelling the greater the discount. Dont tap small chikdren, they travel for for free

3girlsunder3 · 17/04/2024 08:02

Please excuse typos! Have a great holiday, Majorca is lovely

FoxtrotSkarloey · 17/04/2024 08:03

Es Trenc is one great big long beach. It's a lovely beach but that's all it is. At the SE end, Colonia de San Jordi is a great spot to have lunch over looking the port, but there are plenty of places in Mallorca to do that, like Port Soller. I wouldn't be going there if I only had five days.

OP, I think you need to tell us more about what you like, and also if your toddler will want to be hoiked all over the island? When we went with a three yo, we didn't even hire a car because arse we spent every day on the beach, so that's probably clouding my opinions. There is SO MUCH to do, but want one person loves, another detests. Some love wandering Palma's very old streets. Some can't stand cities.

Personally, if I wasn't going to go into Palma (coz my 3 yo would hate it). The one day trip I would do would be as per my pp and drive through the mountains. Park up at Sa Calobra and do the walk round to the stream where I would pitch up for a bit and play in the stream because the toddler would love that.

If you want to see a different beach or part of the island, IMHO the small cove beaches of the SE are more beautiful and specific to Mallorca than Es Trenc e.g. Mondrago.

The tram then train to Palma is lovely, Palma is well worth a day (a week). Soller is pretty.

the buses are fantastic if you fancy not driving.

I like deia but it’s not the best beach.
