Unexpectedly Japan. You can eat well for not much money at all. There’s lots of free interesting stuff, local trains are cheap, even cheap hotels will be clean and safe…

In the past 12 months, was very pleasantly surprised at prices in Malaga and Naxos.

Meganmeccano · 15/04/2024 22:22

Germany

Much of Spain (outside of super tourist traps like Las Ramblas or San Antonio in Ibiza in high season)

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 15/04/2024 22:24

Vietnam.

But obviously expensive to get there.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 15/04/2024 22:32

Montenegro but don't expect gourmet food. If you like fish and seafood there's lots of it though.

TakeOnFlea · 15/04/2024 22:34

Venice! Cheap as chips. €2 gelato, €1 euro ciccetti, €3.50 spritz. A euro on the bus to nearby towns or thereabouts.

misszebra · 15/04/2024 22:34

goa in india

SallyWD · 15/04/2024 22:50

India, cuba

idontlikealdi · 15/04/2024 22:55

Recently, for eating out, Ibiza

bellsbuss · 15/04/2024 23:15

Thailand , food and drink were so cheap. Long time ago though so not sure if it still is

Takoneko · 16/04/2024 06:17

Just got back from Japan and found it incredibly cheap. The flights were wildly expensive but everything else was cheap.

We went to a little okinomiyaki place on our first night there, where we were seated in a Japanese style tatami room and ordered a bunch of food (3 okinomiyaki, a yakisoba and 4 side dishes) and a big highball or chuhai each and couldn’t believe it when the bill for 5 people came to £40. The drinks alone would have cost that in London.

We were pleasantly surprised in Sicily. If you went to simple Italian restaurants the food was way more reasonable (and way nicer) than here. Pizzas 8 euros etc

Indeed. Food in Sicily is amazing. Never looked up any restaurants, everywhere was great. We ate out every day despite having an apartment.

TheaBrandt · 16/04/2024 06:27

Us too also because despite the vast sums paid for accommodation not one of our 3 self catering apartments had a dishwasher! Do they not have dishwashers on Sicily?!

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 16/04/2024 06:45

😂😂😂 I am not sure now ours had a dishwasher.
going back to Sicily in May and can’t wait.

SudExpress · 16/04/2024 07:36

Thailand (but many years ago) I took £200 for 3 weeks and didn't spend it all.

Rome is way cheaper than most places in Italy. I live in Puglia and eating out here costs at least twice as much.

reluctantbrit · 16/04/2024 07:42

Prague, I think we spent less for 3 courses plus alcohol than in London for a main and a soft drink.

France and Germany - entry is often free for under 18s, often under 25s or severely reduced and in general ticket prices to attractions are less than in the UK.

@Meganmeccano - I just returned from the 3rd trip to my hometown in Germany in 3 months and find eating out getting quite expensive. Saying that, a filled roll in a bakery and a coffee is still better and cheaper than a panini at Costa.

ZenNudist · 16/04/2024 07:44

The 1990s!

Inafarawayland · 16/04/2024 07:48

Crete - carafe of wine for a couple of euros and souvlaki 3/4euros (south of the island)

MissAmbrosia · 16/04/2024 09:18

I've been to Kosovo this year and it was bargainous. Dd went to Tirana for the weekend and that was cheaper still. Seville was very good value for money - food and accommodation and it's such a lovely city.

RefreshingCandour · 16/04/2024 11:54

agreed re Seville. I find Spanish cities really good value in general. We are off to Vietnam this year hoping it will be good value.

I have found Greece (Skiathos and Corfu, Crete and Santorini ) the past few years pretty £££. And also didn’t find Montenegro cheap but we were staying in an expensive spot - Kotor.

Lordofmyflies · 16/04/2024 12:58

Vietnam or Sri Lanka. The food is superb, so fresh and perhaps £2-3 for a meal. Train travel was peanuts and the cost of buying goods to bring home was really cheap too

Came to say the same. We returned with £500 of our £1500 spending money.

Greyat · 16/04/2024 13:00

I'm just back from Rotterdam. I was very pleasantly surprised by the cost of eating out and the public transport is amazing and cheap.

Ours did but it was a small one and we also ate out every day as the food was just the best part of Sicily 😍

Albania
Changed some euros, best memory is a 50 note, and couldn't spend all the local currency on Dinner Bed and Breakfast, so gave the remainder to a road side stall when leaving the country.
The stall holder tried to give me 2Kg of apples in exchange, very kind of her but as I was cycling I gratefully declined.
