I was about to click PAY NOW on flights and accommodation for a luxury European holiday for the four of us to go next week. DH walked in, smiled and casually said "DDs passport expires in June..." I took my finger off the pay now button. Sigh.

So does anyone have any ideas for what we can do instead? I'm guessing even Ireland is out - the three month rule will apply there too won't it?

Two mid teens, all want to relax, ideally round a pool in the sunshine, no idea what to look for now. House with a hot tub somewhere? Spa resort that's teen friendly?

@millivani "we" chose to leave!

Guernsey. Plenty of nice self catering cottages and hotels available. Perhaps somewhere like this? www.thefarmhouse.gg/index.htm

At the moment Ireland is the front runner.

House with a hot tub in a nice part of the country is a lovely idea. We did that last April and I got a tan because it was warm enough to be out there in my bikini since the hot water was keeping me warm!

Holiday is next week and you need 6m left on passport

It's 3 months remaining from date of leaving the EU that you require (not 6 months). When in June does the passport expire?

How about flying to the Outer Hebrides? You can fly from Glasgow to Barra in a little plane and it lands on the sandy beach. Even teens will be impressed by that! Then you can island hop to your heart's content. The weather won't be great, but it's a fantastic and different holiday.

Or how about something with the Landmark Trust? Really different accommodation, stay in a tower, a castle, a mill, we've done lots of them. Probably worth giving them a ring as they may be more flexible on dates that way, but here are some late availability ideas: https://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/search-and-book/late-availability/

Also Costa Rica ( one day beyond the day you leave)

mathanxiety · 29/03/2024 22:07

You don't need a passport to go to Ireland if you're British.

And you definitely don't need one for NI, which is beautiful and well worth a visit.

Oh I'm really pleased! It's a wonderful thing to do, we loved it. You could even surprise the teens, their faces landing on a beach would be a picture. There are lots of videos of the landing on YouTube.

Crieff Hydro is a great family stay. Gorgeous spa

Get an express urgent passport? It just costs more. Where are you based?

We are in Cumbria. We've decided to stay in UK and Ireland - would have loved to head to Europe but not enough to do the urgent passport business. We will try and see through the terrible weather next week and explore closer to home.

Barbados ( haven’t checked other Caribbean islands), passport to be valid for the length of your stay.

Heading to Barbados later in the year :) thanks for the suggestion though

Has it passed its 10-year anniversary? Even if it has several months left to run, it is invalid for travel to all EU countries with the exception of Ireland as well as Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Switzerland

There's a few more options there OP.

That's strange because according to the gov website I need three months for all schengen countries including Norway and Iceland. I checked last night as I hoped they might be excluded from the rule.

I think it relates to if your passport is valid for more than 10 years. This used to happen if you renewed early - the passport was valid for 10 years plus they added on the extra however many months early you renewed. So in the case red toothbrush mentioned,a passport with lets say 10 years and 5 months on it from the start date, can't be used in the EU during those extra months once it's 10 years old from day 1. Does that make sense?
