What are your holiday must haves?

BG2015 · 27/03/2024 12:24

We are currently on holiday in Cape Verde and I bought 2 small inflatable pillows that we are using on our sunbeds.

I can't believe I've reached 55 years of age and never thought to buy these before. £5 for 2 off Amazon. They make the sunbed so much more comfortable.

Other must haves are:
Towel pegs
Metal straws
Kindle

What are yours?

Anything to make life easier is a plus

Prescribed meds
Prescriptions or copies of them
Travel insurance details and Health Insurance Card (for EU)
Copies of passports and flight details
Chargers, converter plugs, earplugs and noise cancelling headphones.

I usually buy toiletries in Departures or when at destination, same for "holiday" type stuff that I can get easily at destination.

What's the weather like in CV op? Do you like it there?

BG2015 · 27/03/2024 20:43

It's the first time we've been.
Weather is strange. It's VERY windy and lots of intermittent cloud so can feel a bit brrrr on your sunbed when wind and cloud meet but it's hot too!

Cool at night so definitely need a cardigan, but it is still March I suppose.

Lots of pink people around as the Uv is high. We're using factor 50!

Very large hotel which is beautiful but main buffet restaurant is hard work. Al la cartes are much nicer.

Not a lot to do around the island but this is a fly and flop holiday for us.

Don't know if we would come back.

Noise cancelling headphones and earbuds, including a cheap pair I don't mind risking at the pool or beach. There's always some twat who wants to pierce through everyone's reverie with whatever they're watching on their phone.

Cheap Amazon rain ponchos in place of a proper raincoat/umbrella if rain is unlikely but not out of the question.

Travel scales if I want to shop but have a luggage limit to worry about.

SuperstarDeejay · 27/03/2024 20:49

Oh, and wipes! Baby wipes, makeup removers, anti-bac, polish removers, insect repellent. So handy, and don't count towards your liquids limit.

RomainesToBeSeen · 27/03/2024 20:55

Thermal travel cup. I am up early and like to have a coffee down at the pool and read my book while waiting for DH to get up for breakfast. I pop into the restaurant on my way down and fill up my coffee cup - much easier than juggling paper cups across the hotel.

BG2015 · 27/03/2024 20:59

Wish I'd bought a thermal cup too! Plastic glasses are small at the pool bar

Ground coffee and a cafetiere ( coffee particularly bad in hotels in the Canaries for some reason).
Earplugs ( which I wear at home anyway) and an eye mask in case curtains don't block the light.

abbey44 · 27/03/2024 21:08

I bought a mulberry silk eye mask for my recent holiday for the overnight flight back. It was so soft and well worth the £15 it cost from Amazon.

reluctantbrit · 27/03/2024 21:16

EHIC/travel insurance
Credit Card
Kindle, phone and chargers

Otherwise
insect bite cream
antihistamines
Towel pegs
Suncream - always so much more expensive

Curlyblondefemale · 27/03/2024 21:16

My Sun zapper zinc stick, I've spent so much money over the years on Melasma creams that don't work, discovered this last year in Tenerife... game changer.

BroccoliHighkicks · 27/03/2024 21:18

A pool, a beach, sunshine and cocktails. And several books.

Resisterance · 27/03/2024 21:21

An extension lead and one European plug converter. Means I can plug all my appliances in whilst only needing one converter.

CKN · 27/03/2024 21:31

I pop a few washing pods in a ziplock to rinse out clothes to keep them fresh.

Twilight7777 · 27/03/2024 21:35

Eye mask, kindle, extension cable as there’s never enough plugs! I also take a hanging wardrobe organiser (the fabric type with shelves), if I’ve got room.

Mamofteenager · 27/03/2024 21:58

A cup holder/tray that holds up to 6 drinks at a time. So much easier to carry everyone drinks in 1 go. About £5 off Amazon

PrimalLass · 27/03/2024 22:00

I'll never use a metal straw after learning how a woman died because of one #strawofdeath

PrimalLass · 27/03/2024 22:02

For me:
Large enough self-catering apartments so we have space
Downloads on my kindle
Pool bar

I'm easily pleased

ChatterMonkey · 27/03/2024 22:05

Op can i ask the name of the hotel you are at? Been looking into travelling there

jackspratswife01 · 27/03/2024 22:12

Kindle
Creams
Lipbalm with sunscreen
Bands for sunbed
Hat for shade
Multi socket for cables
Water retention pills for swollen ankles
All docs pics on shared what's app

LivingColour · 27/03/2024 22:16

A multi plug extension cable.

what are towel pegs?

Sconeswithnutella · 27/03/2024 22:34

Mosquito repellent and antihistamines after one trip to the “local” chemist which was 45 minutes walk in 40 degree heat. I don’t get the excitement with towel pegs, my towels stay just fine on their own. I’m pretty easy, a few books and a comfortable bikini and I’m good to go.

BG2015 · 27/03/2024 23:39

@Sconeswithnutella honestly you need them here, the wind is relentless.

Everyone's parasols have to be low down otherwise they blow over. Never known wind like it on holiday abroad.
