What are your holiday must haves?

We are currently on holiday in Cape Verde and I bought 2 small inflatable pillows that we are using on our sunbeds.

I can't believe I've reached 55 years of age and never thought to buy these before. £5 for 2 off Amazon. They make the sunbed so much more comfortable.

Other must haves are:
Towel pegs
Metal straws
Kindle

What are yours?

Big pegs for your towels.

We're in the Karamboa - it's adults only.

Mosquito cream
Prescribed medication
Plenty of money to treat ourselves to meals out and drinks by the pool.

caringcarer · 28/03/2024 00:00

Oh and diarrhoea tablets just in case.

My mini, collapsible clothes airer. It's small enough to fit in the car boot but means we always have somewhere to hang wet towels, swimming costumes etc. instead of on the shower door.
Also, suction flannel hooks; it's far more hygienic to hang your body puff/ flannel than to leave it on a shelf.

@PrimalLass how did she die?

I think she was walking along drinking and tripped when it was in her mouth. I'd just bought metal straws for my kids when I read that. They now have soft silicone ones.

Hot sun and my kindle and I’m sorted!

The place we go also has a washing machine so we can pack VERY light , so 🖕🏼to easyJet etc and their now ridiculous hand luggage costs!😂

MissyB1 · 28/03/2024 12:14

Antihistamine tablets.
My own teabags from home.
mini fridge in room for milk.
Ear plugs
kindle

allfurcoatnoknickers · 28/03/2024 13:38

Mosquito repellant and anti-itch cream
Travel sickness pills for kids and also adults
Insulated water bottles
Loads of snacks for the hand luggage/in case we're feeling lazy and want a quick in-room breakfast.
Direct transfer to hotel. I refuse to ever get on one of those coaches that makes a million stops ever again.

Over-door hooks. Hotels rarely have enough hanging space, & also useful for wet clothes.
Pegless washing-line for very long trips

We bought one of those really thin, but large blankets from one of the local lads. We now take it everywhere and it comes in so handy

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 28/03/2024 19:07

Can't believe that no one has said packing cubes yet!

I personally can't see the need if I unpack fully at the destination.

I like them for a trip where I stay at 3-4 different places and maybe even need different things each time. But otherwise I find them not necessary.

My Sun zapper zinc stick, I've spent so much money over the years on Melasma creams that don't work, discovered this last year in Tenerife... game changer.

Ooh can you tell me more please? I usually try and slap factor 50 on my melasma but it doesn't really make a difference

AlliumFairy · 29/03/2024 12:08

Prescribed meds
Prescriptions or copies of them
Travel insurance details and Health Insurance Card (for EU)

Same here! A necessity when travelling with multiple health conditions. I would add that I take a list of my conditions and medications translated into whatever language and a load of first aid / otc medicines.

Other than that
Taxi transfer to accommodation
Many, many pairs of shoes as I have foot problems plus some proper walking boots.
One of those giant thin cotton bedspread things they sell on markets. perfect to pin up for extra shade.
I'm not one of those who takes my own tea bags but I do take sachets of hot chocolate
Kindle with some new books from favourite writers
A little shoulder bag just big enough for phone and sunglasses

Can I ask a question? If you travel on your own, how do you manage putting sunscreen on your back? I’ve tried a spray bottle, which is ok for my shoulders, but I can’t reach the middle of my back. Is there any nifty little gizmo that might be helpful…?

I was just looking at these on Amazon the other day! No idea if they are any good though.

Oh, that looks just the sort of thing - thank you! I’ll get one and try it for my next holiday 😊

I don't travel alone but DH hates putting suncream on. I used a spray on my back.
