Two days in Zurich

I am going to Zurich for work next month and I have a free day either side of my work commitments to do some tourist stuff. Should I spend both days in Zurich and if so what should I do? Am considering a half day trip somewhere too, any suggestions? It's my first time in Switzerland so open to anything really.

In Zurich itself, you can wander around the lovely old town, visit Confiserie Sprungli on Bahnhofstrasse, take the little train up to Uetliberg/Uto Kulm for panoramic views of Lake Zurich and the Alps.

I would also recommend a day trip to beautiful Lucerne. You can get a boat across the lake and go up Rigi or Pilatus mountains.

Take lots of money. Switzerland is extremely expensive!

GinForBreakfast · 25/03/2024 06:56

It's heinously expensive but lovely. We did a river boat trip and then wandered through the old town. Dinner was sandwiches from a Spar type shop back in our hotel room because the restaurant prices were eye watering.

afrikat · 25/03/2024 07:31

Barely!

GinForBreakfast · 25/03/2024 07:35

Four years ago I paid £12.50 for a small portion of chips. Ketchup was extra.

afrikat · 25/03/2024 07:55

I'll plan on having a few fasting days I think 🤣

Two days in Zurich

Hi I go regularly to Zürich for work too. Wander the old town. You can eat cheaply by going to co-op on bahnstrasse. They have the equivalent to the Harrods food hall but cheaper. Your company is being cheap on your food alllowance. It should be more like ch60 a day. Get a two day all zone team pass to explore. And go for a swim In The lake

LIZS · 25/03/2024 09:04

Go to one of the large Migros supermarkets which have cafes where you can select from a salad /hot food buffet and pay by weight. There are shops under the main station. Boat tour on lake, on the east (Gold) coast are modern mansions owned by likes of Roger
Federer and exclusive hotels. Train up Uetliberg or Zuriberg. Old town across the Limmat river with the Grossmunster and Fraumunster.

Would the lake be warm enough in April? Thanks for the suggestions

Yeah probably a bit cold tbh 🥶

LIZS · 25/03/2024 21:42

Bit nippy for a swim. The badis open in May/June. When are you there? There is a local bank holiday on 15th with a big parade and bonfire to celebrate end of winter.

I’m going to Zürich in the summer. The Lindt factory is high on my list 🍫

A few years ago I paid £28 for a salad and water in a basic cafe for lunch. £30
for dinner won’t get you far.
Are you sure you can claim on the days that you are not working but there for sightseeing?

i like the Migros supermarket for sandwiches, snacks and huge selection of cheese!

WhatWouldYouDo25 · 30/03/2024 07:09

Also my work allowance varies from country to country and I can claim CHF50 for dinner in Switzerland.

girlabroad · 30/03/2024 07:23

I live near to Zurich and would definitely visit the Lindt factory it's a very short train journey out of the city and you need to get the train to Kilchberg download the SBB app which is the train company and it's really helpful. The tour is 15 chf and you get loads of freebie chocs!

Wandering round the city is lovely and near the lake. A boat trip round lake Zurich is also beautiful and takes several hours.

You can easily get a train to Luzern and visit the old bridge and it's another gorgeous Swiss city.

There is a restaurant called Hitl in Zurich and it's the oldest veggie restaurant in the world - they offer a buffet and it's charged on weight, it's a beautiful restaurant and worth a visit - it's just off Bahnhofstrasse.

hechtfan · 21/04/2024 12:54

Bring warm winter clothes and a brolly - it is wet and cold again and has been snowing on and off!
The Kunsthaus new art gallery building is really worth a visit and both free and open late on Wednesdays.
Tschingg restaurant near the Kunsthaus does good inexpensive pasta.
You can take a boat to Kilchberg for the Lindt museum on the normal public transport ticket - it's by zone.
Hope you enjoy your trip!

It'll get a main dish in an Italian restaurant or main and drink in say a Chinese restaurant chain like Mr Wongs. A pizza is usually around 18-20chf.
