Help- layover flight terrified!! What actually happens

thesleepyhoglet · 20/03/2024 12:27

The flight that I'm going on has a short 1-2 stop where I have to change to another plane. The first flight is BA and the second Qatar airlines. I stop in Doha. I have never done a split flight before so am terrified!!

Please talk me through what happens. The flight was booked as one flight even though split over one airline so Qatar are responsible for getting me to the destination. I am hoping I get some guidance but I don't actually know where I go after I get off the first flight to get the next one. I don't think I have to collect my bags as there wouldn't be time to go through security again. Feeling anxious just typing this. Really want it all to go smoothly

When you get off the plane, you follow the signs for Connections, and then you find your gate in Doha and head there to board the next plane

How long is the gap between landing and your 2nd flight?

You won't need to collect baggage if you have it checked all the way through to final destination. You should also be given 2 boarding passes at your original airport.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 20/03/2024 12:32

Exactly as first poster said. Don't panic 😃

Rosesanddaisies1 · 20/03/2024 12:35

It’s really easy, when you check your bags in just double check they will go to your destination. When you arrive follow the connecting flights sign and honestly you can’t go wrong.

StamppotAndGravy · 20/03/2024 12:38

About an hour before landing, ask the steward on the first flight. They will possibly be able to tell you what your next gate is, and definitely how to find out, where to go and if it's on time. They might be able to point out another passenger to follow. They're definitely used to reassuring inexperienced fliers and explaining what to do!

hangingonfordearlife1 · 20/03/2024 13:02

doha is a beautiful airport but massive. you follow signs to transfers once off the plane. Then find the closest screens to find the gate of your next flight. Then just follow the signs for your gate and wait. how long is your layover as there is a lot of walking at doha

thesleepyhoglet · 20/03/2024 13:03

Thank you so much! Advice to follow signs to connections is what I needed.

Due to arrive into Doha at 23.40 and the next flight leaves 1.20am so not even 2 hours.

That’s the perfect stop over length! Enough time to get off, find gate, stretch legs in Duty Free and then reboard! Enjoy!

thesleepyhoglet · 20/03/2024 13:07

You are all lovely. I'm taking a child (although older one) so want to look like I know what I'm doing or she will panic!

We had a one hour space between flights at Doha after 18 hour flight from Auckland which was on time. Between disembarking, then a bus to terminal, we had literally 10 minutes to get through security and run (miles!) to the gate before it closed. Hopefully you will be fine as you have longer. Security was very quick and staff really helpful.

Houseplantmad · 20/03/2024 13:10

That’s plenty of time. You may find on your inflight screen that you can look up which gate your onward flight is going from. If not, as PP has suggested, ask staff on the plane or the ground crew as you leave. You could even look up Doha’s live arrivals departures board now for the same flights and that will give you an idea. The airport is likely to have a map on its website for further reassurance.
You’ll be glad to stretch your legs in between flights. Enjoy your travels.

samarrange · 20/03/2024 13:19

At least 80% of the people on your flight will be changing to another plane, because not many people actually go to Doha to visit.

BA and Qatar Airways are codeshare partners. That means that your BA flight has a Qatar Airways flight number and vice versa. If the first plane isvery late they will put you on the next available one at no charge to you. But also, if it's only a bit late they will often hold the second plane until you get there.

My recollection of Doha is that you don't need to go through security again (unlike at Singapore, where security is at reach gate), but don't hold me to that. In any case it's a very nice airport and there are friendly people to help with transfer queries because that's their main business.

marsbaralert · 20/03/2024 13:32

It’s good you’re checked through to final destination OP.
It should be easy and straightforward.

It means if you miss your connecting flight due to any delays on their part, they’re responsible for you.

It happened to us with Emirates on way to oz.
Delayed departure leaving uk meant we missed the connection, so Emirates put us up in a hotel room for 8 hrs in Dubai.
Included a lunch buffet of the most amazing food !

tishtishboom · 20/03/2024 13:33

All the times I've been through Doha, you have to go through security on transfer, even if both legs of the journey are with a single airline. Just hand/cabin luggage though. Your hold luggage will be checked through to your destination.

drawnfrommemory · 20/03/2024 13:40

From memory we had to go through security when we connected at Doha on a BA/ Qatar codeshare but it was smooth enough. Checked luggage went separately.

We had a similar gap between flights and it was just the right amount of time tbh - not so short that we were panicking, but not so long that we ended up hanging around for ages. I remember having enough time to check my phone and grab a bottle of water before we boarded our onward flight.

ElaineMBenes · 20/03/2024 13:45

That's a perfect time between flights.
When you get off your first flight you'll see a departures board which will tell you the gate for your second flight. ..... just follow the signs to that gate!
You might need to go through security again but you might not but just follow signs as ask if you're unsure.
It's a big hub airport so they're used to supporting people getting connecting flights.

IsItTimeToRetireYet · 20/03/2024 13:49

As others have said, Doha airport is very well set up for transit. It’s not like Heathrow where you might need to change terminals, use buses, etc.

The layout is shaped like a dogbone. At one end is A and B gates, the other end is D and E gates, the straight section in the middle is C gates.

If you need to transfer between A, B or low-numbered C gates, that’s a short walk. If you need to transfer from A or B to D or E or high-numbered C gates, it’s a longer walk but there’s a monorail that runs along the middle if you don’t want to walk.

i transited through Doha twice last month and both times was security screened at the gate, although in the past it has been done centrally instead. Depending on where you’re going, liquid restrictions might apply for your second flight so you may not be able to take water from flight 1 onto flight 2.

as mentioned by a PP, they hold flights if a group of people are slightly delayed. So if you’re 45 mins late departing the Uk, don’t spend the next 7 hrs of flying time worrying about your connection 🙂

Enjoy your trip!

Chemenger · 20/03/2024 13:52

We flew through Doha from Bangkok on Sunday. It is a very well organised airport; most people are transiting from one plane to another and there are staff at key points showing which way to go. You do need to go through security but your bags will go straight on to the next plane without you needing to do anything. Again security is well organised and quick. Our first plane showed the gates for the connecting flights on the screen before we landed which was helpful. You will have time to pop to the loo and make your way to the gate, without any difficulty.

SeaToSki · 20/03/2024 13:53

When you check in at your airport of origin confirm with the agent that your bags will be checked through to your final destination and get both boarding passes.

Stash the second boarding pass somewhere safe as you wont need it until you get to Doha

Go thru security and board your first flight.

When you get off the plane at Doha look for flight connections / transfer hall and DONT go to the exit. If in any doubt ask someone

https://dohahamadairport.com/airport-guide/at-the-airport/transfers

if you are still really worried, book special assistance with BA on their website as part of the manage my booking option. They will then meet you off the plane and escort you to your next gate.

one other option is to look on youtube for videos of people walking the route in Doha airport..just put in your terminal

porridgecake · 20/03/2024 13:55

IME the staff are very good about announcing transfer instructions before anyone gets off the plane. There are always plenty of ground staff to help.
Keep your boarding passes safe and accessible! You will most likely be given the passes for both flights when you check in for the first one, so put them safely with your passport as soon as you board the first leg.

LakeTiticaca · 20/03/2024 14:55

We had a change at HongKong. When we disembarked there were staff holding up placards with destination names and arrows pointing the direction. This was a great help AS HK Airport is huge!!

I didn't realise I would have to go through security again. It's two different air lines but bought the flight and one provider manages it

If you do have to go through security then it's just on your way to your gate for the second flight. It's all very straightforward.
I've flown through Doha 4 times in the last year and only needed to go through security twice (both on the way back to the uk).

It's all really well signposted. You'll be fine!

mitogoshi · 20/03/2024 19:17

Doha does make you go through security when connecting to another flight so be prepared for that. You'll have two boarding passes one for each leg. On arriving in Doha, follow signs to connections, you'll go through security then go into departures after which it's no different to any other flight - check board for gate etc. there was lots high end duty free!

saraclara · 20/03/2024 19:21

Doha is a very calm and spacious airport. Things are well signed and my transfers there have been a breeze. I'm sure you'll be fine.

chipsandpeas · 20/03/2024 19:28

doha is actually a good airport to transfer through imo, chances are you will go through security again (i did on my way from uk to australia both ways) and occasionally depending on your destination you may also need to go through a further security check at the gate (i had this on the way to australia but not on the way back)
