Where to go in the states

Hi y’all . I want to plan a surprise holiday for my kids for one of my daughter’s 9th bday. She absolutely loves the states and we tend to go there once a year but this year we are going in April to Orlando and I thought we could go somewhere different in August. Anywhere in the states that you think we should go? Any places to stay too (we are family of 5 will be 7 in June)

I really enjoyed Monterey and the Pacific Coast Highway. Also the lakes/mountains/forests/waterfalls of Oregon. Lots of outdoors activities available as well as whale watching on the coast. We went to a baseball game, ate outside, music festivals, great food, saw hummingbirds and a bald eagle. We loved it!

Parker231 · 25/02/2024 17:59

What ages and interests?

With very young babies you’re going to be limited due to the high temperatures in many holiday destinations. I’d suggest basing yourself in Camden in Maine and do local day trips.

TizerorFizz · 25/02/2024 21:16

So twins as well who are not yet born? What happens if they are premature and need lots of care? I’d not do this holiday in August. Save it for Easter 25.

parietal · 25/02/2024 21:31

how old will the twins be? I would not travel to the US with small babies (under 4 months) as medical care is complex and expensive.

IReallyStillCantBeBothered · 25/02/2024 22:57

You should consider Chicago, it’s a beautiful city with lovely bike lanes along the lake for family rides and beaches as well we lonely museums, a good food scene and sport teams etc.

Easy day trips around the Midwest eg Michigan is lovely, Wisconsin etc.

Having said that, I wouldn’t be traveling with such young babies.

@IReallyStillCantBeBothered Kids won’t do museums. I think Chicago is fantastic. Not for dc and babies though. Will they appreciate the food scene? I doubt it.,

Fother · 26/02/2024 09:35

How are you going to mange this ? You must be maximum 32 weeks to fly with twins in April ? When are you giving birth? June/July?

nc42day · 26/02/2024 09:43

Where would I be going in August with brand new twins? The back garden, unless I had a nanny, this doesn't sound like a holiday in any shape or form to me, but California is a catch all.

TizerorFizz · 26/02/2024 13:17

@Fother Most women would be mad to do that though! Many twins arrive early and need more care in their first few weeks. Many are born at 32 weeks! Or earlier. Heavens knows what the costs of giving birth in the USA would be should they be premature?

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 26/02/2024 13:19

Any state where women still have autonomy over their bodies.

SOBplus · 26/02/2024 13:33

Sorry, Chicago crime is now out of control, I wouldn't go and I used to love Chicago. I would say from the description of kids' interests someplace like Williamsburg - Busch Gardens, Water Country water park, Colonial Williamsburg historical center with lots of running around room, history (Yorktown), etc. but very muggy in August. If active but no "rides" I would suggest Bar Harbor Maine for that time of year, lots of hiking, kayaking, tidal pools, etc and less hot than anywhere down south. San Diego California has lots of activities - Sea World, roller coasters, beaches et al and great weather but some areas have gotten dodgy in the last 5 years but easily avoided.

Overtheatlantic · 26/02/2024 13:44

Terrible idea with 8 week old twins. They will be so vulnerable and so will you.

Brainded · 26/02/2024 13:55

With all due respect @YourLocal didnt ask for anyone’s opinion on whether they should travel with newborn twins…I assume OP knows her own limits!!
To answer your question @YourLocal new York is fab for everyone and there’s so much to do. Invest in slings for the babies perhaps.
other than that how about Vermont or cape cod etc up that way. Or Colorado is supposed to be beautiful also.

I agree.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 26/02/2024 15:15

Will you even get passports in time for the new babies?

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/02/2024 15:15

With five children including newborn twins? I’d be going absolutely nowhere. Possibly center parcs if feeling very extravagant.

Charlingspont · 26/02/2024 15:18

Cape Cod. But not with babies.

With babies, caravan in Devon or Cornwall. 🙂

DinnaeFashYersel · 26/02/2024 15:21

New York and Washington DC are fantastic for kids (and adults).

So much to do and see. Our youngest was 9 in DC and 11 in NYC and loved them both.

TizerorFizz · 26/02/2024 15:45

@DinnaeFashYersel Did you take new born twins?

Fother · 26/02/2024 15:57

5 children in New York - good god no! Or anywhere other than home come to that matter 😂

Yep this, we had an amazing time doing a road trip LA-Seattle.
Last year we did a California road trip, our 7yr old daughter had the best time! Loved the hikes, the views, the weather 😁

Unlikely if OP has to apply in summer, it's the passport offices busiest time and can take weeks. Honestly, trip to the US with 3 kids and newborn twins is my idea of hell!

Mine too! But logistically I don't even see how it's feasible anyway. I'm sure I couldn't get an appointment to register my first until she was 5 weeks old, nevermind worrying about passports too!
