Rome colosseum

This is a very specific question but I'm hoping that the collective mind will help.

We are going to Rome in April. And I'm trying to book tickets for the colosseum which is the priority.

However, every time I try and book the website refuses to access and then it kicks me out.

Has anyone got round this problem?

The all in tickets for the forum, coliseum and palentine Hill are 24 euros for 2 days including the arena area, which by the way is just as horribly crowded as everywhere else and is a v small part of the place so that link for 71 euros is a total rip off

Exactly, that's part of why this is so annoying! I want the 34 EUR tickets which include the underground bit. Have phoned several times and am just stuck on hold then cut off, and have also emailed to no avail. Gonna have to book a rip off unofficial version at this rate as want something sorted.

Hi we visited the coliseum last year and ended up booking the rip off tickets. To be honest I wish we hadn't bothered. There are so many things in Rome to see. I'd just do a hop on hop off bus tour and get some photos.

Iirc you can buy them in person the day before, so as long as you can plan your trip that may work.

That's interesting, when did you go? Reason I ask is because I've been speaking to a colleague who went last summer and she's saying should book everything in advance, so I dunno now. I'll try a few more times, and then book a back up as I'm not sure I want to risk it on the day. Argh.

I love a hop on hop off bus! That's an option although when I will be there it'll be very busy as it's around Easter, so I don't know if that might impact things.

It was pre Pandemic so could have changed to online now. We found Florence required prebooking to get the most out of the trip but again you could still do it in person if you were willing to wait dir an entry slot.

We did colosseum & forum many years ago with a company called rome tours with the kids.
Can't recommend them enough, they were resnobly priced and we had our own private guide. Bonus points were, that the guide got in touch a week or so before visit asking what areas we'd like to see. Obviously not sure if it's still the case...

We went in Oct half term, it was heaving there was no way you could just rock up on the day, unless you were prepared to pay the tour touts outside a huge premium.
We had inadvertently booked through one of the agencies (tiqets does a great mktg job of looking like the official site but they're really really not) and we had to schlep all the way down to their office in the wedding cake square to pick up tickets then rush back up for our slot, it was hugely stressful.
Hang in there with the official site for better value and peace of mind.

Also, not the colloseum, but I can also highly recommend this: www.welcometo-rome.it/

I've just tried the coopculture site and bookings aren't open for April yet. Does anyone know when they open?

You can book 30 days ahead. I recommend booking as soon as you get within 30 days of when you want to visit.

A new day is released each day but always 30 days ahead.

hellsBells246 · 27/02/2024 17:25

Thanks, @Lindy2! Will do.

minipie · 27/02/2024 18:33

Yes if you want a ticket with the Arena included you do need to book the day tickets are released ideally (they do release more batches later but no way to tell when these will pop up).

The underground bit (I forget its name) seems to be impossible to get tickets for. I logged on as soon as tickets were released for the date I wanted and they were all gone already. Perhaps some tour agents have sniper software.

minipie · 27/02/2024 18:40

@SagittariusDwarf be careful booking tickets with the underground part via a tour agent, I read numerous stories of people being told by the agent last minute that the special underground entrance wasn’t available so it would just be an ordinary entrance ticket. If they’d known this the customer would rather have booked directly through the official site for half the cost (and possibly with Arena entrance at least).

Mothersruin123 · 27/02/2024 18:53

We went in October half term and it was super busy. I missed out on tickets 30 days ahead so booked cancellable tickets via an agent as I was told a second release happens 7 days before. I was fortunately able to bag official tickets in that release and cancelled the agent ones.

You'll need to book Vatican museum tickets well in advance too. We missed out on the basic tickets and ended up buying "with lunch" tickets instead...the lunch was not worth the extra money, but at least saved us queuing. The queue was long.

I’m going with my 11 year old end of March/beginning of April and am just getting so confused with which site is official and which isn’t. Don’t know what to do!

Try these, not the cheapest on first glance, but you'll have a guide all to yourself.

And even though it's meant for children, the guides we had were very knowledgeable and able to answer all questions- even from a history buff like myself!
