City break for teens in October

Newbeginningsandhappy · 17/02/2024 15:07

Planning 4-5 night city break in October. Originally looking at Europe but more expensive than I realised. Given the expense now wondering about New York as prices look similar. We will be flying from Scotland.

Any suggestions on a city break with 2 teens?

Rome! Temperature will be perfect; lots to see; great food. We did it with teens in the October half term and everyone loved it.

ramonaquimby · 17/02/2024 15:12

also suggesting Rome. Weather should be gorgeous and there is so much to do

PickledTurkey · 17/02/2024 15:46

We really enjoyed Prague and Venice with teens in recent Oct half terms.

herecomesthesun24 · 17/02/2024 17:21

@Newbeginningsandhappy How much are you getting flights to New York for?

Express0 · 17/02/2024 17:22

Another suggestion for Rome

jeaux90 · 17/02/2024 17:42

New York with teens is fab. We did it with ours 2022. They loved it.

EffectiveStudy · 17/02/2024 17:42

We had exactly the same dilemma - the flights were so expensive for anywhere in Europe. So instead we are going on a cruise! By mixing and matching flights it’s coming out cheaper than a city break with the added bonus of seeing a few different cities

Newbeginningsandhappy · 17/02/2024 17:47

@herecomesthesun24 (excellent user name) - I’ve been getting flights and hotel for New York at around £4000ish which is the same as I’ve been getting European breaks for.

Prague
Berlin
Rome
Florence - if they are into art and history
Cyprus - we booked AI but did lots of day trips in the week we were there,

New York is fab with teens. My daughter went last October half term (with school) an the weather was great. Also, it's New York, so bound to be very cool for a teen.

We took our teens to Gothenburg from Edinburgh with Easyjet
cheap flights and hotel
great city and island, good shopping, clean, lovely people. Also Warsaw,Gdansk and Wrocław were great city breaks

TravellingSpoon · 18/02/2024 11:13

October half term trips I have done with my tweens/teens are
Barcelona
Berlin
Amsterdam
Rome
Athens (but quite expensive)
Copenhagen
Budapest.

Loved them all, I think Budapest was our favourite.

TizerorFizz · 18/02/2024 11:19

@Newbeginningsandhappy You really will pay more for everything in NY when you are there! Way more. Add in local tax and 20% tips. That’s the norm now. So many places in Europe are cheaper. I’m trying to work out what city breaks you are looking at for £1000 each!

Spain eg Seville is cheaper than that. Eurostar to various cities is cheaper. Look at Amsterdam. Anywhere in Italy, Florence would be good, even Venice. Athens worth looking at too. Any former communist state would be cheaper.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/02/2024 11:21

Eastern Europe is (much) cheaper once you are there
I’m not a huge Prague fan but others are
Budapest is lovely
Krakow even more so

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 18/02/2024 11:24

NYC is eye wateringly expensive for food/drinks/taxis etc just now… with teens be prepared to spend a fortune.

Have a look at Valencia, Budapest, Palermo and Seville and Malaga

dameofdilemma · 18/02/2024 11:27

Amsterdam by train? Cheaper than flights and loads to do. Could even do a couple of Northern European cities by train.

We were put off Europe at Oct half term by the flight prices.

Zonder · 18/02/2024 12:27

Essaouira. Lovely weather in October. I don't know if you can get a direct flight from Scotland though.

Lovetotravel123 · 18/02/2024 12:35

Prague is great for teens. Also Gothenberg.

Newbeginningsandhappy · 18/02/2024 12:42

Thank you for responses.

Train takes too long from Scotland so am focusing on flights.

Good point about the expense of New York. I haven’t been for 20 years and didn’t have expensive teens in tow so hadn’t really thought about that.

I’ve found some more reasonable options on Expedia. Preference would be Rome or Berlin but I’m going to look into some of your other suggestions too.

I’ve just looked at a list of destinations from Glasgow airport. Lots to cities in Europe. Cheaper than going to London first. Lots to Eastern Europe and warmer places like Spain or Marrakech.

TizerorFizz · 18/02/2024 14:41

There’s Naples, Rome, Verona, Turin, or Split. Lisbon or Porto are good too.

TizerorFizz · 18/02/2024 14:43

Having said that there’s lots of destinations some definitely include a stop! So slow.

user1494050295 · 18/02/2024 14:47

Partner to daughter to Berlin last half term for 3 full days. They had a blast and it was very reasonable. Ba flights and hotel option. Central Berlin

AmaryllisChorus · 18/02/2024 14:53

I can't believe Europe is as expensive as New York. Nowhere is! Even the cheap chain diners like Applebees were eyewatering.

Budapest is gorgeous for teens - go to the baths, the cave hospital, the ruin bars (for coffees or soft drinks - they let in underage teens with adults if they don't drink) Margrit's island with the fountains that play rock music - and where you can hire one giant family tricyle, boat ride on the Danube, the sculpture park with all the communist propaganda, the amazing art nouveau cafes of incredible cakes and Andrassy Ave with all its designer clothes shops. We also went to an animal cafe and had coffee with a chameleon and on an excursion to feed honey to circus rescue bears (who live in a huge, beautiful enclosure and stroll up to the barriers only if they want honey.) Have lunch in one of the massive indoor markets. It's amazing to walk around and take photos too. It is so beautiful.

AmaryllisChorus · 18/02/2024 14:55

Lisbon is amazing but I have never queued so much to do absolutely everything. Two hour queues just to board a tram. Same just to enter a monastery to look around. Two hour queues to visit the caves in one of the castle gardens - all in October, off season. It wasn't even half term.
