Family friendly hotels Amsterdam… with parking

Hi, we’re looking for a hotel in or on outskirts of Amsterdam for 2 nights after staying at a holiday park elsewhere, we’ll have our car (compact SUV) with roofbox. We were looking at a hotel in ilburg so we could get the tram into the city centre however the hotel parking has a height limit we’ll likely exceed, and reviews aren’t great. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

Olympic hotel perhaps, maybe (not sure about SUV space) Zuiver? Airport hotels given the train is under 20 minutes from the Centraal station?

AnnaMagnani · 16/02/2024 12:44

Airport hotel is probably your best bet as transport in from there is so easy.

StamppotAndGravy · 16/02/2024 12:55

The business hotels round the highway at Schiphol, Amsterdam Zuid or Bijlmer Arena have parking and stations, but they're not the best areas and I wouldn't leave a roof box on. Parking is normally expensive even at these places. The areas are usually dead with no good restaurants etc, just like staying by Heathrow is miserable.

Where are you going next or coming from? Most cities have a good train connection into Amsterdam so is it not better just to do day trips staying further away? You're going to be spending at least 40 mins travelling in from the outskirts anyway.

Have a look at the Van der Valk hotel in Volendam. Loads of free parking and roughly 30 mins by bus to Amsterdam Central Station- the bus stop is right outside the Hotel.

londonmummy1966 · 16/02/2024 13:19

Okura has parking (and a decent sized pool). There's a tram stop right outside to take you to the museums and canal ring

Althenameshavegone · 16/02/2024 13:35

Thanks for those suggestions, unfortunately our budget can’t stretch to the Okura! ideally we’d like to avoid an airport hotel but would be happy on the outskirts in a suburban neighbourhood where there’s a bit more life, but not sure if that exists… we’re staying near zeewolde beforehand and would like a couple
of nights in a city before getting the ferry back from Amsterdam.

Are there things you especially want to do in Amsterdam?

We found by far the best way to enjoy Amsterdam was to stay somewhere else and travel in, go to whatever we wanted and go back to the other city for an enjoyable evening.

So many choices within a short distance, we liked Den Haag, Haarlem and Utrecht.

Althenameshavegone · 16/02/2024 13:57

Kids are quite young so we want to minimise travel time into the city, no specific things to do other than nemo science museum and just general looking round the canals etc, parks. we’d also consider Rotterdam if Amsterdam is proving too tricky. I had looked at Utrecht but seems to be the same issue with finding a hotel with parking…

Haarlem looks like a good option

Amstelveen has some big conference style hotels with parking and a quick tram ride to the centre.

Suburban neighbourhoods with hotels with parking don't really exist in nl. Suburbs are very urban and densely populated by British standards. The only hotels with lots of parking tend to be conference hotels on highways and/or very expensive.

Would camping be an option? Zeeburg, Gaasperpark and Vliegenbos along others have lakes and tramlines into town.

AnnaMagnani · 16/02/2024 14:10

We found it quicker and more pleasant to travel in, than the time we stayed actually in the city as hotels there are phenomenally overpriced and were not nearly as nice. The centre was also stag do central and unpleasant although I think this is improving.

Haarlem is also great for general wandering about and prettiness.

If any of you have asthma, Amsterdam sets off my asthma. I think it's diesel from the boats.

We've just spent a long weekend in Amsterdam and we stayed at the Hoxton Lloyd which is in rietlanden. It's about 3 stops to centraal station on the 26 or 20 mins on the no 7 to places like negen straatjes. We had a 'biggie room' which had a double and good bunks. We have teens and they slept well. As it's east Amsterdam could be placed ok for you to come in. It did have parking under the hotel but also quite a bit of street parking around that area and not too busy.

In Utrecht you could look at the hotels in hoog catherijne as there is lots of parking there and it’s next to the station for going elsewhere and right in the centre of Utrecht. Probably won’t be cheap though.
or you could go for the van de Valk at breukelen. It has lots of parking and is next to a train station with easy access to Amsterdam and Utrecht. You won’t be going anywhere within walking distance of the hotel though other than the station.

Thanks this looks like a great option for us, do you know how much the on street parking in the area cost?

I'm not sure where "ilburg" is. I assume something got deleted since it starts with a lowercase "i". If you mean Tilburg, that's a city about 90 minutes by rail from Amsterdam (NL is small, but not that small), so I guess it's not that.

We have stayed a couple of times at the Ramada in Badhoevedorp. It's some way from anywhere (although there are a couple of decent restaurants within walking distance), but you can park there and then drive to the nearby residential area from where you can get the bus into Amsterdam. The hotel is not picturesque or authentically Dutch, but it has nice big rooms and is surprisingly well-priced considering what you can pay for a hotel in the Amsterdam area.

Jeannne92 · 16/02/2024 21:40

I presumed it was a typo of IJburg.

Althenameshavegone · 17/02/2024 07:55

Hi sorry it was a typo of IJburg

We stayed in an Airbnb in Abcoude last year that had a parking space outside. The train into Amsterdam takes about 30 minutes.

BoredAuditor · 17/02/2024 09:11

We stayed in VIA Amsterdam which was a short metro journey outside the centre.

It was a hostel but we stayed in a private room. Very clean and family orientated. Kids loved it.

guineasgalore · 17/02/2024 09:43

We stayed in the Lion d'or in Haarlem which is on the square with the train station, easy to get in to city centre. Think it was fairly reasonable and has parking

HavfrueDenizKisi · 17/02/2024 11:50

@Althenameshavegone I'm afraid I don't know re on street parking but they're so helpful at the hotel is you called them they'd talk you through it.

susansaucepan · 17/02/2024 11:54

Amstelveen is nice and you can travel easily and quickly in to Amsterdam.

Interesting to hear Haarlem described as "nice" , from memory it was known as quite gritty

botemp · 17/02/2024 11:57

Parking is very expensive in Amsterdam. Do you absolutely need your car with you at the hotel, if not its worth leaving it at a park and ride. There's several on the outskirts of Amsterdam and they have good direct public transport into the city, €6-13 per 24hrs. More info here.

I'd also suggest looking at Zaandam, really easy access into Amsterdam by train. The Inntel hotel would be really special, you'd have to check their parking options.

queenofthewild · 18/02/2024 18:16

Zandvoort aan Zee might be a good option. A beach resort just outside of Haarlem. They have a Center Parcs, a couple of large hotels and loads of B&Bs. You'll find something in your budget. And it's a 20-30 minute train journey to Amsterdam (although if it's sunny you may prefer a beach day).
