How long for passport?

Hoping to submit my passport application later today. Will be doing online rather than the paper application.

It is a renewal but haven't actually ever had a passport as an adult. My last one expired 20 odd years ago - I'm not sure if this makes a difference to timeframes.

Just wondering how quickly the application was processed and new passport arrived? We're going on holiday in a matter of months and still have to get mine and our 2DC's sorted. Having a bit of a panic that we won't get them all in time 🙈

Just wondering. Renewed my child’s passport and they are 15. Will I need to get an adult one in 3 years or can they use child ones till they run out? In this case would be at 20?

megletthesecond · 06/02/2024 12:35

My straightforward adult renewal took four days last week. On-line application and posted old one back on Monday. New (black non EU 😔) passport delivered Friday.

Yes, they can use it until it expires, even if they are over 18 by then. From gov.uk passport pages:

You can use your child passport until it expires, even if you’re over 18.

I would allow 3 weeks but hopefully it will be quicker if your application is all correct and straightforward. As you have only ever had a child's passport, this is not a renewal application. It is an application for a first adult passport. Your new passport number will not be the same, so you do need to take care about advance holiday bookings @PrudeyTwoShoes if your passport number is required.

Just to add this from gov.uk:
You must also apply (for a first adult passport) if your last UK passport was issued before 1 January 1994.

Did an adult renewal in January and was only 5 days

Same. I was very impressed.

Thanks. Had just popped into my head and was going to google later. Makes sense otherwise the fee would be extortionate.

Ds lives overseas and even from abroad the renewal was received back in less than 3 weeks.

PrudeyTwoShoes · 06/02/2024 14:29

Thank you all. I've done the application now. I still need to get someone to confirm my indentity and send off my old passport and marriage certificate. Hopefully none of this will take long so I can get the kids' done.

Fingers crossed it will be quick for you. One thing you can do to speed up the process is to get the kids pictures done. Then you’ll have the code ready to apply as soon as you can.

when do you go?

The OP has had a passport previously, just not recently, so it is a renewal.

However she says she has never had an adult passport , and her child passport expired over 20 years ago ( anything that expired prior to 1994 is treated as a first passport ) . Anyhow hopefully she did the correct application .

A passport is a passport. The only difference between the two is the duration of validity. The OP is still the OP despite having grown 20 years older.

I concede that if it's over 30 years ago (i.e. pre 1994) then it wouldn't be valid. I guess it depends how far "over 20 years ago" the OP means 😉

I did mine at the beginning of Jan and it came back within one week!

Abracadabra1 · 06/02/2024 15:28

We took Ds photo against a white wall in the spare bedroom and uploaded form my phone, didn't even need to take him to the shops for it!

Theraffarian · 06/02/2024 15:56

Issued before 1994 I meant above , not expired before x

idiotfacelicker · 06/02/2024 16:18

I got a first adult renewal (as in renewed from child) last week. It took 3 weeks in total. It sat on a desk not having been acknowledged as received for two weeks but then once it was "received" it was back within a week.

Orangebadger · 06/02/2024 17:20

We got our sons back within 3 weeks, possibly closer to 2 weeks. It was very quick.

Glassfullofdreams · 06/02/2024 17:23

Renewed both my dds passports (one had expired and one was going to expire within the next 6 months) at the beginning of January and we had their new ones within 10 days of doing the online application.

Moier · 06/02/2024 17:27

10 days

13Bastards · 06/02/2024 17:45

I changed my name on my last one and it was only a week still!

Have you checked you can renew when it's so out of date through? I thought after a while they treated it like a new passport?
