How long for passport?

Hoping to submit my passport application later today. Will be doing online rather than the paper application.

It is a renewal but haven't actually ever had a passport as an adult. My last one expired 20 odd years ago - I'm not sure if this makes a difference to timeframes.

Just wondering how quickly the application was processed and new passport arrived? We're going on holiday in a matter of months and still have to get mine and our 2DC's sorted. Having a bit of a panic that we won't get them all in time 🙈

I don't mean to be 'that' person but why leave it so late/or book a holiday without valid passports???

If you're not here to answer the question, then move on... I don't need your criticism about our timeframe and we have our reasons, which I've purposely chosen not to disclose.

I renewed my passport online a few months ago. I was amazed at how quickly it came back. I can't recall exact times, but 10 or so days from start to finish.

I did all the online stuff and sent my old passport recorded delivery, and had regular emails regarding the process (I.e. they've received application, received old passport, processed, printed, dispatched).

I did mine out of season, so I would not be surprised if it took a little longer now as we head towards summer.

allmycats · 06/02/2024 11:29

Did an adult renewal in January and was only 5 days

Delphina17 · 06/02/2024 11:31

A few months ago it took 2 weeks to receive it. I think you'll be fine!

Friolero · 06/02/2024 11:32

I renewed DS's passport at the start of January, it took less than a week from submitting the online application to receiving the new passport.

SaltyGod · 06/02/2024 11:33

Same here, less than a week from start to finish. Incredible service from the Passport Office

Icystars · 06/02/2024 11:33

I’ve renewed ours this morning too. We haven’t booked anything but are hoping to go away end of July. I would have thought if you’re going away in a few months it will be fine. It currently says it’s taking about 3 weeks. I’d just get the kids ones done asap.

Throwawayme · 06/02/2024 11:35

I renewed mine recently and it was 6 days I think. Maybe 7. I was so impressed. I think you'll be fine

QforCucumber · 06/02/2024 11:36

sent ds1 renewal off on the 25th Jan, got his replacement on the 2nd Feb

KickboxingWanker · 06/02/2024 11:40

They are quite quick atm - it always gets busier the closer to holiday season.
Send the DC’s off as soon as you have yours back.
I used to work at the ppt office and the main reason for delays were errors on forms etc - you’d be surprised how many people spell names wrong.

double check everything before sending.

AbsentCause · 06/02/2024 11:49

I just did DD’s, posted Tuesday, received by Passport Office on Friday, printed the next Wednesday, arrived the following Friday. Slowest bit was the posting it to them!

I renewed mine in January and got the new one in about a week. Renewed my kids ones last year. One had expired over covid and one was a renewal of a still in date one. They both had the same processing time.

Janetime · 06/02/2024 11:53

I got mine back last week, took ten days from pressing submit. I really think uou need to just do it and stop messing.

Papillon23 · 06/02/2024 11:56

Mine took about a week but it was a renewal. Anything else is likely to take longer but I think they have worked through the backlog now so hopefully not too bad.

PrudeyTwoShoes · 06/02/2024 11:58

Thanks all! It sounds really promising in terms of the turnaround time.

RE kids, I've been told to do ours first as it'll make theirs easier/quicker to do and get back.

Does anyone know if myself and DH need to be on the application or if it can be done just as easily with one of us (whoever's passport arrives first)?

If you haven't had a passport at all as an adult then it's not a renewal it's a first time adult passport. Applying under the wrong thing will slow it down. Contact the passport office either phone or chat function

They aren't taking too long but you might be best trying to get a urgent appointment instead of online

HermioneWeasley · 06/02/2024 12:04

It’s quick at the moment. Remember you have to fill in your passport details when applying for your kids so you can’t do them all at the same time or your details will be wrong and your kids ones will get stuck (bitter experience)

Theraffarian · 06/02/2024 12:09

Unless I’ve misunderstood your post , you are applying in effect for a new passport , not a renewal , added the link in case you need it . Using the wrong application will delay things and cost you extra.

The OP has had a passport previously, just not recently, so it is a renewal.

Sweetpotatofalafels · 06/02/2024 12:12

Renewed by DCs a few weeks ago. One changing to an adult passport. They were back in less than a week.

FeltCarrot · 06/02/2024 12:13

DD and I renewed our passports last month, turnaround was less than a week.

Thestruggler · 06/02/2024 12:15

Did mine in January and took 7 days, FIL sent his around the same time and it was 5 days

Londonnight · 06/02/2024 12:15

I did mine recently. Still had a month or so to run on the old passport. Mine took around 10 days, but part of that was due to applying over Christmas and New year, so a bit of a delay. It would have probably cone quicker at a different time.

mouse70 · 06/02/2024 12:15

10 days for mine, renewal for 10 years out of date passport. 7 days for nephew going from child to 1st adult passport. Both done online very impressed by whole service.
