August destination - not too hot!

We are a very pale family who do not cope well with heat or blazing sun.

Every time we book a summer holiday to somewhere warm, even south of France, Spain etc. we regret it as we spend the whole time hiding under umbrellas or in air conditioned buildings.

The last few years we have done our holiday to such places at Easter, and done a UK holiday in the summer, but this year would like to travel abroad.

Where would you recommend that is likely to be around 20-25 degrees in August (aware this is unpredictable!)? We are open to most types of holiday, city, beach, countryside.

Do you think Berlin could be a good choice?

Thanks!

Sorry, couldn't resist. What about Lisbon? It might be a little hot, but you could stay further out. Cascais is a nice fishing town and the train in is a couple of euros and very reliable. There is a load of history in Lisbon and it is very reasonably priced.

We're already planning Lisbon for next Easter! Porto in Portugal was somewhere we went to in August a few years back and really was far too hot for us.

"Canaries doesn't get much hotter than 30°C even in August, so is nice for hot but not unbearably hot."

It was 38 degrees last august in Tenerife when we were there! Has everyone forgotten the fires?

InterGalacticc · 03/02/2024 20:52

We visited Tenerife in July a few years ago and it was hot! Yes at times there was a breeze making it a bit cooler (bit that means a pale family is even more likely to burn), but on the whole it was very hot. We got to the top of mount Tiede and remarked it was the first time we weren't too hot

Remotecontrolislost · 03/02/2024 20:52

Jeez the Canaries? Last place I'd go in August if I didn't like the heat

Parapapampam · 03/02/2024 20:53

Crossing Canaries off the list!

I’d get the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam and try the Dutch coast. We’re going this year and I’m expecting it to be similar to the U.K.

CatStoleMyChocolate · 03/02/2024 20:55

The other places I’ve always thought would be nice are the Baltic beaches - especially Poland and Lithuania.

parietal · 03/02/2024 21:04

Denmark in the last week of August often has great weather and cheap holiday accommodation because the danish kids are back in school.

We took this Ferry when the DC were younger and visited Eftling for a week, was a fabulous holiday, if you have younger DC would highly recommend a day trip to Eftling. We have friends that live in The Hague, so tend to stay with them when visiting The Netherlands, haven't done the coast though.

Is there a particular part you'd be able to recommend?

Anywhere on the Iberian peninsula can be expected to be very hot in August. Over 1,000 people died in a heatwave in Portugal last year (albeit in July). If the OP is concerned about heat, this really wouldn't be a good choice, even out of town.

Yeah, I wondered. I've not been in August. I know June and July are hot.

elastamum · 03/02/2024 21:48

Mauritius. I used to go in the summer with young children. It's their low season and very pleasant mid twenties.

Ormally · 03/02/2024 21:51

Hmm, the mountains in the Austrian regions mentioned are not as hot as places lower down, but extremely easy to get sunburnt there as you are higher up (the breeze etc. can mislead you into thinking you're fine). Cities in general are hot, over 30 degrees and denser areas heated up greatly around 4pm when the sun's angle changes. In Vienna people tend to escape to the forest or closer mountains if they're lucky enough to have somewhere to go regularly.

I'd agree with Iceland (also a very interesting place).
Hamburg is north Germany and has a very large lake and a lot of water, so I've been in summer and it has been very pleasant, but that may have been just luck.
What about looking into some of the coastal parts of Ireland (Galway etc?)

I've been to Lake Garda in August and it was a lot cooler than I expected. Took a day trip to Venice and it was sweltering. Think around the lake has its own climate and its beautiful too.

TizerorFizz · 03/02/2024 22:08

@Parapapampam This might be above your budget but we went to Peru one August with families worldwide. Budget accommodation and perfect weather for us pale types. Highly recommended. We are going to Eastern Canada this summer. Dc are older now so it’s just me and DH. Scandinavia isn’t cheap but is cooler.

Agreed! We stayed in Garda in August and it was lovely, but a day in Verona was unbearably hot.

Unfortunately I got the worst sunburnt nose ever whilst in Peru, think the high altitude didn't help, agree that the temperature wasn't too bad though!

I've never been to Lake Garda, I'll do a bit more research into August temperatures there as it is somewhere I'd like to visit.

We did the Black Forest round Titisee in august a few years ago - flew into Basel and drove. That was pleasant but not roasting and we got some rain.
this year we are doing Denmark. DD and DH don’t like the heat so I try to humour them with a cooler summer holiday!

shreknjumps · 03/02/2024 22:29

I got heatstroke in lake Garda in august 😅

Yes. Went to an olive grove there and was practically hallucinating. Was amazed that my lava-like brain was still telling me quite how many lizards I could see, and that my internal temperature was never meant to coincide with lizards', especially not that many at a time.

TizerorFizz · 03/02/2024 22:46

@Parapapampam There is no inland area that will not be hot in August. Lake Garda will be hot! Best to go in May half term. The only options are north or mountains. Sad about Peru but factor 59 sun block is your friend.

BrioLover · 03/02/2024 23:01

Northern coast of the Netherlands is lovely. Lots of islands and long sandy beaches. Hire bikes and just pootle about. Schools go back in August too so often the last few weeks are cheaper and quieter. We did southern Netherlands last year in August and went to Maastricht and stayed near the German border. It was about 25 degrees each day
