August destination - not too hot!

We are a very pale family who do not cope well with heat or blazing sun.

Every time we book a summer holiday to somewhere warm, even south of France, Spain etc. we regret it as we spend the whole time hiding under umbrellas or in air conditioned buildings.

The last few years we have done our holiday to such places at Easter, and done a UK holiday in the summer, but this year would like to travel abroad.

Where would you recommend that is likely to be around 20-25 degrees in August (aware this is unpredictable!)? We are open to most types of holiday, city, beach, countryside.

Do you think Berlin could be a good choice?

Thanks!

I am fair skinned too and so feel your pain. We have booked the Slovak mountains this year..flying into Kosice and staying in the Tatras. Could be hot too, but I am hoping it won’t be.

What about somewhere like Iceland, or Norway?

VanCleefArpels · 03/02/2024 19:48

Austria - look at lakes & mountains companies like Inghams and Tui. Zell am See particularly nice and lots to do

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 03/02/2024 19:50

The Netherlands - you could do a mixture of beach, cities, activities

Sonora25 · 03/02/2024 19:51

Sweden or Finland

Sonora25 · 03/02/2024 19:52

Austria usually over 30 degrees in August

Auntpodder · 03/02/2024 19:53

Scandinavia? You might get a heatwave but schools go back there in early August so rates are cheaper and availability gets better. Stockholm is fab - and if it does get hot, you can swim in the harbour (the island of Langholmen has a sweet little beach) and head out into the archipelago by ferry but there are great museums (especially the Vasa)... but Berlin is great too - and you can swim in the river...

ALunchbox · 03/02/2024 19:56

Brittany?

Parapapampam · 03/02/2024 20:02

Some great ideas, thank you!

Had considered Stockholm, but not a cheap destination plus a bit pricier to get to from our local airport (Leeds Bradford), haven't ruled it out though so will research a bit more.

We did French Alps a couple of summers ago which was bearable, so other European mountainous regions might be OK.

I live near Berlin and August is very hot these days and not especially comfortable I’m sorry to say. I would also recommend Scandinavia.

SeatonCarew · 03/02/2024 20:04

August is not your friend.

That's worth knowing, thank you, I do want to visit at some point though, might have to go on our Easter list instead!

We did a Baltic cruise in August 2019 and apart from St Petersburg the weather was pants! So not warm or sunny in the following places:
Helsinki
Riga
Tallinn
Lithuania
Stockholm
Copenhagen

HappiestSleeping · 03/02/2024 20:06

Scunthorpe?

lolarun · 03/02/2024 20:14

Berlin definitely perfect for a springtime visit (winter here is quite bleak too!!)

JaneKatSuttonGoals · 03/02/2024 20:24

Bit hotter than 25 but not hot hot - have a look at the Canaries. We are also pale and not good with heat and Lanzarote was lovely last year. Around 28-30 but with a breeze at the higher end

Hadn't considered the Canaries, visited Fuerteventura years ago and not that impressed, but think weather was OK, so might research the other Islands.

Sorry, couldn't resist. What about Lisbon? It might be a little hot, but you could stay further out. Cascais is a nice fishing town and the train in is a couple of euros and very reliable. There is a load of history in Lisbon and it is very reasonably priced.

shreknjumps · 03/02/2024 20:47

Innsbruck. It rains every afternoon

foobio · 03/02/2024 20:49

Canaries doesn't get much hotter than 30°C even in August, so is nice for hot but not unbearably hot. Depends what you like doing on holiday though, as there are limited attractions!

Ellmau · 03/02/2024 20:50

Somewhere in the Alps. Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland, or the South Tyrol all gorgeous. The higher you go the less hot.

For a beach holiday, try the north coast of Germany or Poland.

I went to Iceland in July and it was 11 degrees. This might be too cold.
