11 hour flight for 7 night trip

Looking at flying to Aruba for 7 nights. Not really interested in other caribbean islands as been to them before or they’re poor value for money.

Am I crazy to do an 11 hour flight for 7 nights holiday?

We went to Mexico for 1 week. Flight there was 10½ hours but flight back was under 9 hours.

WhisperGold · 14/01/2024 17:45

Done similar before. Wouldn't do it again.
11 hour flight means whole day travelling. Twice. Have to go 10/12 days to be worth it, personally.

Chewbecca · 14/01/2024 18:00

I would if that was all the leave I had. Could you squeeze it to 9 nights, covering two weekends?

MaloneMeadow · 14/01/2024 18:00

We went on an 11 hour flight to California for 5 nights! Not a problem at all, jet lag wasn’t an issue. Flight got in to LA at 8pm, full night’s sleep and then hit Universal Studios for 9am. It was a fabulous trip and we packed lots in, definitely one of my favourite family holidays. Only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer due to DH’s job. We made the most of the time we had though, i’d say go for it!

Will the flight back be an overnight one? (I think most Caribbean ones are?). In which case, you do have a pretty full last day.

I'd definitely do it!

Knitgoodwoman · 14/01/2024 18:02

For work I’ve done Jamaica for 5 days, Texas for 5 days, and for a holiday I went to Mexico for a week. It’s definitely long enough to rest.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/01/2024 18:08

Fine for me. I actually really like that length of flight as there's enough time to watch a movie and have some wine as well as have a decent sleep. I regularly fly 11-12 hours for 3-4 days both for leisure and business.

Knitgoodwoman · 14/01/2024 18:10

Forgot to mention DH is an airline pilot so regularly flies 13 hours, has maybe 1 or 2 nights then flies home! And no sleeping on the plane, obviously and he finds it ok!

Movinghouseatlast · 14/01/2024 18:11

I'm about to do thst very thing. It's not ideal, I'd prefer 10 days, but we can only realistically go for 7 nights. I've done long haul on business for 3 nights in the past!

Almost never - I don't believe in less than two week holidays. But to Aruba? Definitely not. Way overpriced and rather boring was my view of it, and I didn't have to fly 11 hours to get there.

BIWI · 14/01/2024 18:13

When I was working I flew to Sydney for two days! Think I was in the air longer than on the ground.

NewYear24 · 14/01/2024 18:15

It’s definitely worth it.
I’ve visited Cape Town, Barbados, LA, DR, Florida for lengths varying from three to eight nights and I have thoroughly enjoyed the trips. I’m off to Mexico in three weeks for a week which is a similar length flight.
I normally wake up early the first day which is good for getting sun loungers, visiting theme parks and generally making the most of the day.
I never eat on the return flight and I take a sleeping tablet.

bobomomo · 14/01/2024 18:24

I've done further, 14 hours, for a holiday, dp did Australia for 2 days but for work!

We did this too when child free. I wouldn’t with young children.

chipsandpeas · 14/01/2024 18:57

ive done it and would do it again, im even going for a 13 hr flight to singapore this year for 1 week

judgementfail · 15/01/2024 00:57

Of course it's fine. Stick to Your destination hours once there (stay awake) and you'll be fine by the next day.
I regularly travel NZ to SFO (12-14 hour flight) for a long weekend with my family

spearthatbroc · 15/01/2024 07:10

the very reason i went to aruba 11 years ago was because the flight was 8 hours!

Lesina · 15/01/2024 07:15

Did it over Christmas, went to Phuket for 6 nights. It was worth the journey :) I’d definitely do it again.

Oh that's mad. Great! But mad!!!

Spreadthehappiness · 15/01/2024 07:24

Do you like flying ? I’ve flown to the Caribbean for a week and found it fine; however , I love flying so travel days are a holiday day in itself . I’m not too bothered with jet lag either . If you find flying/travel exhausting then I wouldn’t .

Oldraver · 15/01/2024 07:26

I've done Las Vegas for four nights but obviously a day either side for travelling. It was doable if you don't spend all night in clubs

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/01/2024 07:28

It would depend for me on how much you suffer from jet-lag and the times of the flights.

We went to Mauritius for 7 nights but both flights were overnight. We arrived around 10am so were at our hotel for lunch and didn't get picked up to leave until about 6pm so had almost 8 full days there, and little jet lag as only 4 hours difference.

eurochick · 15/01/2024 07:47

It wouldn't bother me. I've done longer flights for a week before.

NewYear24 · 15/01/2024 08:05

Oh I forgot I also went to Mauritius for a week, I had no jet lag.

Finallybreathe · 15/01/2024 08:15

I went to Jamaica for five nights and it was fine.
