11 hour flight for 7 night trip

Looking at flying to Aruba for 7 nights. Not really interested in other caribbean islands as been to them before or they’re poor value for money.

Am I crazy to do an 11 hour flight for 7 nights holiday?

I actually always enjoy the flight - the entertainment systems on planes these days are brilliant. There's so much to choose from to watch, listen to or play that you really can't get bored! I also always have my kindle with me too. A very different way to 'endure' the journey compared with the days when there was one film, shown on screens overhead in the aisle, which you couldn't pause when you wanted to eat your meal or go to the loo!

Do you like flying ? I’ve flown to the Caribbean for a week and found it fine; however , I love flying so travel days are a holiday day in itself . I’m not too bothered with jet lag either . If you find flying/travel exhausting then I wouldn’t .

what class do you fly?

Same, I normally watch a film and binge watch a comedy. I watched Colin from Accounts on a recent flight before it was released here. That way I’m like oh no I hope we don’t land yet I’ve got three more episodes to go.

Yes, on one of our trips to Australia I managed to watch the whole first season of The Handmaid's Tale!

(And we're talking about travelling in economy here too)

Spreadthehappiness · 15/01/2024 09:04

@spearthatbroc economy every single time. I wish business haha!

I flew to Australia for a 10 night stay, so I would do 11 hours for 7 nights.

I regularly do 14 hours flight for less than a week for work ..... I'd definitely do that for a holiday where you get to relax at the other end!

I think it's fine. Realistically you end up losing a day for travel pretty much anywhere you ever go.

That’s true, I find because of gaining the fours flying to Caribbean or US the journey doesn’t seem that much longer than for example Turkey or Cyprus. The night flight isn’t a laugh but then we wouldn’t go anywhere if that put us off.

I think it's fine!

You just need to fight the jetlag for a few days

I had awful jet lag about 15 years ago and put me right off doing any more long-haul. It led to long-term insomnia that I had to go to the doctors about. They prescribed me some sleeping tablets which sort of reset me it really really did put me off.

However, five years ago, I did go back to long haul and did the East Coast of the United States and it was totally fine. I then did a return trip from the Caribbean also fine and a two-way trip to California also fine!

This year we went to California, I bought some melatonin and took that for two nights and it really helped take the edge off the jetlag I had about two days where I felt a little bit tired but honestly, it was totally fine

If you can go business class of course, will help because you can have a sleep there and back.

You will still have the same amount of time in the resort. We just have a day of travelling there in a day of travelling back tact on either end.

Is it a direct flight? From Amsterdam to Aruba and neighbouring Curaçao it is about 9 hours.. personally, a week would be tops for me in Aruba, for me too much of an American Disneyland for adults. I like Curaçao or Bonaire much better, in fact I even live on Curacao and I take such longhaultrips to Europe for a week 😁

I've done this twice (India and Japan). It was worth it but I'd rather two weeks in an ideal world.
