Summer cruise: P&O or Princess?

DarkForces · 31/12/2023 09:50

I've never been on a cruise before and was hoping for some advice. Dh and I are in our 40s and dd is 12. We like Butlins for the shows and dd loves beige food and I'm missing exploring and a cruise looks like a great way to see a few locations and relax.

Im looking at Norway or Northern Europe, nowhere too hot in August. P&O and Princess have trips that look good, sadly Disney is out my price range. Does anyone have any tips or experience to help me decide?

I haven't sailed with P&O but went with Princess from LA to Vancouver earlier this year and it was great.

JoeyMaloney · 31/12/2023 16:57

P&O are awful (IMO - very Brits abroad/Butlins) , Princess is a far superior cruise line - would definitely recommend them over P&O

JoeyMaloney · 31/12/2023 17:00

Sorry should have said Disney is fantastic in terms of service and entertainment- have a look for repositioning cruises, you can sometimes get good deals.
We were pleasantly surprised by NCL (booked as the dates suited and had a brilliant time)

DarkForces · 31/12/2023 18:45

Thanks all. Not heard of ncl. Will take a look

I second Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL). The have large cruise ships around the Med in the summer. I went on one late October for 12 days and we sailed to 11 different ports. You sail away from a port about 8pm and when you wake up you are in another port or sometimes another country. The food is very plentiful and there is so much choice and variety. You can just help yourself. They have a free whippy ice cream machine too. They do a free at sea package that is worth upgrading to to get free alcoholic drinks, internet minutes at sea, money off excursions and free meals in the specialist eateries. I think they also have some flight credit on offers ATM. I don't work for them. They have a fabulous dance show a bit like strictly. You need to book for it as soon as you board the ship because it books up quickly.

NCL does sound fab! Almost booked P&O so I'm very glad I checked here first.

I have been on all three and P&O is my least favorite.
Princess do an add on all inclusive package including drinks, gratuities and WiFi which is usually the most reasonable in value. NCL does something similar but not so competitive.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 01/01/2024 08:53

I actually think P&O are ok for the price. The issue stems from people assuming a cruise is intrinsically a high end product tbh - but you can do a Caribbean cruise with them for two weeks for under £1k and the experience reflects the price.
That said they wouldn't be my recommendation - particularly with a 12 year old. I'd check out NCL, Royal Caribbean or MSC. Royal are my top choice for family cruise but the price is higher. MSC are marmite - the food and entertainment aren't as good as some others but they're brilliant for kids and the prices are generally competitive.

DarkForces · 01/01/2024 09:00

Great. I'll take a look at them too. The ncl cruise out my price range but looked fabulous as it's a bit longer and the itinerary is amazing. It seems you get what you pay for. I'd like a balcony so not helping myself on price either! I'll definitely heed all your warnings about P&O

Ignore the naysayers, my parents liked p&o, they found ncl too American and people were scruffy. I've done Disney but Disney is £££. We love Cunard but depends on your tastes, more lectures and classical music, musicals weren't great. I suspect from your op that p&o might suit best. We actually like Marella, lots of fun, but they don't do Northern Europe.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 01/01/2024 09:04

I have done p&o and Princess and loved them both. For a 12 year old princess may be a bit dull unless you can book on the new Sun Princess which has more stuff for families. I also found the food can be a bit odd in the main dining room on Princess. A very American menu with some weird combinations, but the buffet was great and one of the best we had been on.

Royal Carribean would be a good shout with a 12 year old or NCL. Do not do Cunard as your 12 year old would be bored senseless.

What does your 12 year old like? Would they go to the kids club etc ... that would be a good indicator of what they would enjoy ship and cruise line.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 01/01/2024 09:07

But with cruises you really get what you pay for. P&o though have cheaper drinks than many, those inclusive drinks packages aren't cheap. We all have a set budget, so ignore those advising options that are double. I wouldn't necessarily bother with a balcony, think we went on ours twice recently.

DarkForces · 01/01/2024 09:17

NCL looks great value and we're a bit scruffy so might fit in!

Dd is super active and does competitive gymnastics. She's happiest if she can make a holiday friend but will muck in with us if she doesn't.

Dh and I love trying different foods, especially if it's done well. Dd is a lover of beige so that can be tricky but we're used to working around it and all enjoy Greek/med as a compromise.

We all love exploring and I'm hoping to take full advantage of any excursions.

We all love a good show! We've done a few holidays at Butlins and enjoyed them, also bluestone, away resorts (my favourite) and Parkdean type places so I'm not super fussy, but don't enjoy constant queues or crowds so I'm a bit worried that I'll find a cruise a bit much, but it seems a great way to see a bit more of the world than Cornwall!

That's interesting about the balcony. I imagined myself reading out there while floating through the fjords, but maybe I'm romanticising it a bit!

The fjords is one cruise I would get a balcony for or at the minimum an ocean view. And I have done inside cabins to to suites. I go with the prices and what we can afford.

ShufflingAlong · 01/01/2024 09:49

P&O is cheap but Iove Princess especially their AI packages which means all tips/drinks and lots of other extra things are included and paid for before you sail.

I also love their Princess app so you can order food and drink anywhere on the ship and it comes to you.

We have picked Princess again this year over P&O. The only negative was that we found the sitting areas to feel crowded on Princess and it sometimes felt like you were sitting just off a corridor.

ShufflingAlong · 01/01/2024 09:50

For us a balcony is a must as just being able to sit outside and stare at the ocean/port is nice to do otherwise you have to go to a communal area which depending on where you are on the ship can be a bit of a trek.

Budgiegirlbob · 01/01/2024 09:53

A balcony is lovely for the fjords. But for the majority of a cruse, it’s likely that the only view will be open sea. And we’ve always found that we spend hardly any time in the cabin. The savings you can make by having an ocean view or inside cabin can be substantial.

We’ve done several cruises, mostly with NCL, as we love their ‘freestyle’ way of doing things - no fixed dining times, no formal nights, wear pretty much what you want (most people dress smart casual in the evenings, but it’s not essential). Although it’s definitely worth booking shows and speciality restaurants via the app before you board.

We like the larger NCL ships such as Getaway, Escape etc. Theres lots going on, but plenty of places to escape the crowds if you want. Definitely avoid the buffet on embarkation day - it can be a zoo! The restaurants are much quieter at this time.

Theres not as many activities for kids on NCL as Royal Caribbean, but probably more than P&O or Princess. They have a good kids club- but watch the ages, you might find your 12 year old is in with much younger kids, and not with young teens.

That said, our kids didn’t go to the kids clubs, they still made friends, and found plenty to do.

if you do go on NCL, definitely get their ‘free at sea’ package if you plan to drink at all. It costs around £150 more but includes a large selection of drinks, one or two specialty meals, some limited Wi-Fi etc. All these are expensive on board, so it’s worth having IMO. Buying drinks on board can really add up if you buy them as you go.

Thanks. Dd is very excited about msc's robot bartender and they seem to have great sports facilities and pools.

MSC is a love/hate cruise line. It is very much for the European passengers. All announcements are in 4 or 5 different languages. Also, they don't have fixed itineraries so passengers embark and disembark at every port stop. I haven't done MSC but my best friend has and she wouldn't do it again. She said it just wasn't a great experience for her. She cruises a lot on Princess.

DarkForces · 01/01/2024 10:57

Thanks @OhhhhhhhhBiscuits . It certainly implied it had a fixed itinerary with timings etc but maybe it was just an example. You can tell I'm a complete beginner at this. No idea what to prioritise except it needs to have good activities etc for dd.

Would she be interested in going to a kids club? Our child lived Princess kids club but she is younger. I looked at the older clubs and the older ones seemed to be having a great time in them. My friend with teens says they go to the kids clubs for the first couple of days, make friends and then they arrange to meet up etc...... not necessarily in the kids club.

Sirzy · 01/01/2024 11:10

I have done 5 p and o cruises and they have been fantastic for us. Ds isn’t into activities so a lot of the busier ships wouldn’t work for us (but do for others)

Princess is certainly something we would look at in the future though!

I'm a bit worried about that as she's 12 (but looks about 14) and so wouldn't want to be in with the little ones. I don't know how strict they are on the ages, but she's too young to be in with older teens (although she has a few older teen friends in gymnastics)

p and o (and I think all of them) are strict with ages for the kids clubs.
