Summer cruise: P&O or Princess?

I've never been on a cruise before and was hoping for some advice. Dh and I are in our 40s and dd is 12. We like Butlins for the shows and dd loves beige food and I'm missing exploring and a cruise looks like a great way to see a few locations and relax.

Im looking at Norway or Northern Europe, nowhere too hot in August. P&O and Princess have trips that look good, sadly Disney is out my price range. Does anyone have any tips or experience to help me decide?

Are you really sure you want to be ploughing up and down these beautiful ffjords in your gas guzzling ship? I don't understand how you can countenance that in 2024.

I certainly want to be!

P&o of you're budgeting, princess is a nicer cruiseline. Also consider royal caribbean to the fjords, they have fun facilities for kids on their ships. I haven't tried ncl but heard they are good too.
Don't worry about being too casual, there are all sorts of people that will be sailing, most aren't wearing dinner suits 🙂

That's a relief. I definitely won't be able to afford a new wardrobe on top of the (essential) drinks package!

Additional costs

  • drinks even soft drinks
  • tips. These are essential - your waiting staff and cabin steward will be paid next to nothing and rely on tips. When I cruise I take the tip as the bare minimum and have always paid more - doubled for really exceptional service
  • excursions. You don’t have to use the ship’s, you can DIY or book through other operators like viator

Maybe I’m just terribly downmarket but I don’t find P&O “awful” at all. We’ve been to the fjords twice on Iona and have had a lovely week both times. Norway is beautiful, and the ship is nice and modern.

We are also a family of three and our seven year old daughter is autistic. They handle her needs brilliantly in the kids club so she can go there for a little while each day but mostly we hang out together. We’re a very introverted family though so having somewhere pleasant to sit and read a book whilst looking at a fabulous view is all we really need!

I will say that I find the food a bit disappointing on P&O - it isn’t bad but it’s unmemorable. I imagine more expensive lines have much better food.

P&O meets our needs for now and I think it’s a decent product for the price - it’s much cheaper than any other line for us, largely because we have usually managed to get a free child place for our daughter as we come from Scotland and so can sail outside of the English school holidays in early July. None of the other lines seem to offer that kind of discount.

I have a fjord trip booked with p and o for June 2025 . Anda Bahamas cruise in March 3025. And an MSc christmass market cruise for November. I love cruises. Please ignore people in here that are saying p and o are like Butlins, it's really not 😂. The issue is that people all believe that cruises, ALL cruises are naturally incredibly posh but they aren't. Each line has its own benefits and each do especially well in different ways.

P and o - great value line with very reasonably priced holidays. Family oriented in lots of way. They do a beige kids buffet on board lots of ships, they don't over subscribe the kids clubs. Drinks are very reasonable prices in that they are similar to the Highstreet pubs and you can take your own 1l bottle of spirits and mixers on board with you to drink in your cabin. Juice/tea and coffee is available in the buffet at breakfast and you have a kettle in your room so if you were on a tight a budget you could get away without buying any drinks at all should you choose. If you subscribe to mailers/3rd party emails then you can get the chance to bid for upgrades of they are available.

Msc- this line has rolling embarkations instead of collecting all passengers on day 1 and then dropping them back off on day 7. So pretty much every port stop has different nationalities getting on and off. This means the food is much more European in nature. The kids clubs are sponsored by Lego and the entire fleet feels more glitzy. The biggest ship is euriba and has multiple water slides and high ropes course etc but even the older ones like preziosa are still packed with kids stuff and a water slide. Again, you can get the chance to upgrade if available. The cheapest time by FAR to book all inclusive drinks is at the time of booking. We booked the 29th November European cruise a few darts ago and for 2 adults and 2 kids with all inclusive premium drinks it was £1400 for a week. That's including champagne by the glass, cocktails, beer, spirits and soft drinks and unlimited soft serve ice cream.

Ambassador- an older, less multi generational customer base. More expensive right across the board and less choice as what they do, they do well. I don't think a 12yo would enjoy these as much as the MSc or p and o. Drinks are expensive .

There are lots and lots of videos in YouTube. If you find a cruise you like, see what ship it OSS then search it on YouTube for reviews. Lots of groups on Facebook as well that are filled with very experienced cruisers and bloggers that are happy to answer questions.

Don't forget to factor in cruise specific travel insurance. You will be denied boarding without it and if you have any pre existing health issues it can get to be very expensive.

They all have their pros and cons but overall they’re fairly similar. IMO Disney too expensive and your dd is a bit too old to really enjoy. P and O are solidly good value, as are Princess (Princess slightly better quality food) MSC isn’t popular with everyone but the
ships are beautiful and would prob have more exciting activities for your dd plus more likely to make friends. So I’d pick MSC in your circumstances. Also don’t worry about choosing inside accommodation if your budget isn’t massive, you can still have a nice holiday and see the views from other areas of the ship. You’ll have a great time whatever you choose.

DarkForces · 02/01/2024 13:21

Such great advice. It seems we'll have a great time on them all. I must admit still liking the look of msc, but will price them up and see where we are. School holidays are a pita as everything is £££ but I'm in Wales so we sometimes have misaligned holidays so may look across the year and see if there's an alternative to the summer too.
Need to renew my passport urgently next!

We did Norway on sky princess last summer. It was my first time on princess and I loved it.

PinkPlantCase · 02/01/2024 14:09

We’ve always had a great time with P&O. Would thoroughly recommend.

greasypolemonkeyman · 02/01/2024 14:35

I happened upon this link to p and o menu examples which details the various eateries and specificall explains the kids menu, which a lot of blogs fail to do.

How did you find the queues for bar/food etc? They look like they've got fantastic activities!

Sometimes it was busy at the buffet for breakfast or lunch but not too bad. However you could avoid the buffet and have breakfast and lunch in a main dining room and have it served up to you, freshly cooked to order too and it didn't cost any extra.

When I was on the Sapphire Princess it was a fully english speaking line whereas MSC announcements tend to be in about 4 or 5 different languages but it didn't take from our cruises.

DarkForces · 02/01/2024 22:59

Thanks. It sounds amazing! Dd and I are watching reviews!

I’ve done a fair few cruises with kids and without. Princess is nice but I would say P&O is very good for families. I would personally be wary of MSC the ships can be very crowded and the entertainment is a bit weird. There are also very mixed reports about the food.
if you are thinking of the Norwegian fjords then P&O Iona was built for it.
