Booking a week long holiday in a lodge with family. But some are only staying a few days .

Hi so 5 of us are going away in total for a week in a holiday home. 3 people have said they only want to do 3 nights now. Which is fine by us, we still want to go for the week. The total cost of the stay £1550 .

How would you decide how much they should pay ? Maybe this is more of a maths question actually 🤣🤯

Everyone should pay equally for the full week if that's what was originally agreed.

LeedsMum87 · 11/12/2023 09:35

£1550/5 people = £310 each
This is considering you booked it based on the initial agreement that everyone would be staying the week.

FigureItOutLittleMonsters · 11/12/2023 09:36

5 people at £44 per day each for 3 days and 2 people at £111 per day each for the remaining 4 days.

So 3 people who stay 3 days will pay a total of ££399 (£133 each) and the 2 people who stay 7 days will pay a total of £1152 (£576 each)

StillWantingADog · 11/12/2023 09:38

why should some people to pay more just because others changed their minds after agreeing in the first place? Though if this was the plan all along it’s a bit different

Debtfreegoals · 11/12/2023 09:38

Id probably just ask them to pay £550 and you pay the £1000 but that’s me

Brbreeze · 11/12/2023 09:41

If the different time scales were agreed in advance of booking, then do the calculations people have made above.

If they have changed their mind and previously were due to stay the week, accommodation costs should be split evenly. You shouldn't have to subsidise them for changing their minds.

Split food etc per nights people are staying.

Mindymomo · 11/12/2023 09:43

I would say everyone pays the same, when you booked you booked for a week for 5 people, if they pay less then decide to stay longer than the 3 days, which may be likely as you are staying longer, you would end up paying a lot more.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/12/2023 09:45

If already booked, and now they've changed their mind, it should be total cost divided by either person or number of bedrooms. No discount for only staying 3 nights.

If they argue, I'd point out that if the other 2 also decided now to also only stay 3 nights, the whole price would still be payable.

If not booked yet, change the location and try to find somewhere with 2 seperately bookable apartments / chalets / whatever that can be booked for 3 days and 7 days respectively.

SleepingStandingUp · 11/12/2023 09:47

If you agreed to that place and stay 6 nights then really everyone should pay their equal share.

Why are the others changing their minds? Are they trying to save money? Have they now raised the question of how much to pay? Is there a chance they'll change their mind again once they're there?

Is it 5 adults so 5 beds? Will you gain anything from having the place to yourself?

Soontobe60 · 07/12/2023 23:28

I disagree. If all parties planned to stay for a week initially, then the place was chosen on that basis but some changed their minds later, all parties should pay an equal amount regardless of how many nights they stay.

This!

PuttingDownRoots · 07/12/2023 23:38

Its not exactly fair on the people staying longer to have to pay for a bigger property than they need as some people have changed their minds

Indeed. Plus we are talking about about much per night but the people who are leaving could be staying and enjoying the property for most of the day of the day they are going home and not being charged for that day as not sleeping there!

This really make things complicated and unfair.

I agree.

I think it depends on how you want to spilt the costs and what everyone is happy with.

Are the people staying the week happy to pay more? If not then the people only coming for 3 days should still pay the full amount.

If it’s split equally over the week regardless of how many are staying it’s £51.67 per person per night or £258.35 total per night. So £310 per person for the week.

it gets complicated if they are only paying for when they are staying

It would still be £258.35 per night

For those staying 3 nights, they would pay £155.01 each for the 3 nights.

The other three nights left would then be split between the 2 that are staying having to pay extra.

eg

nights 1-3 5 people staying would be £51.67 each totalling £258.35 per night.
nights 4-6 2 people staying £129.18 per night again totalling £258.35

So those staying 3 nights would pay a total of £155.01 and those staying the full week would have to pay £542.55

Hope that makes sense!

Its a huge difference for the extra few nights.

If they originally agreed to go for the week then I think it’s only fair they pay for the full week regardless of how long they stay for.

Christmasmishap · 11/12/2023 10:54

The cost of having a big enough property that they can stay for a few days is the same as if they were there for a week. They either need to pay an equal share or arrange separate accomodation so you can book somewhere smaller for the week.

NearlyMonday · 11/12/2023 11:04

This. We (nearly) had a similar situation with family a few years ago. We discussed hiring a large property for a large group, within everyone splitting the cost equally. Then a few people decided that the people who made the booking (DH and I) should pay for the whole cost, and other family members 'buying' nights off them on an adhoc basis. Thankfully we shelved the whole idea. Nightmare.

hsapposhit · 11/12/2023 11:52

What was the initial agreement?
If it was that everyone went for a week then 3 people have reneged on the agreement.
I'd be really annoyed actually and especially if the 3 people were now expecting to pay less.
If they'd said at the beginning that they only wanted to stay 3 nights then the group could have booked a different property, or the same property for 3 nights instead of 6, thereby not leaving a couple of people having to pay more.

What would happen if the other 2 now decided that they only wanted to stay 3 nights? Can the booking be amended so that everyone only pays for 3 nights? If not, and the other 2 said they only wanted to stay 3 nights, then everyone would have to share the full cost of the property for 6 nights because the full amount still has to be paid by the group.

People are so flaky these days.
I think everyone should pay up for 6 nights whether they are going to be there for 6 nights or not.

I totally agree @hsapposhit

Josienpaul · 11/12/2023 12:51

Personally, if it’s an after thought then I think they should pay their share 1/5 which is £310 each regardless of nights stayed. Why should you have to pay more for them backing out?
If they’ve stated up front and you choose to go ahead then it’s £221.43 per night and divide by how many staying that night and so the 7 nighters will pay £575.72 each
the 3 nighters pay each £132.85

Alwaytired44 · 11/12/2023 15:12

That calculation is not fair at all! The people staying 6 nights are now paying more than double for their stay!

Alwaytired44 · 11/12/2023 15:18

THIS IS THE ONLY CORRECT CALCULATION I HAVE SEEN ON THIS THREAD! 👏

Imisssleep2 · 11/12/2023 15:37

If you all planned to stay for a week, or it can only be booked a week at a time then I would split it equally. If there is the option to book for 3 nights and it's alot less (sometimes it's not much less) then I would look to split per person per night with those staying a week paying then extra. If the price for a 3 night is pretty much the same then split equally.

If split equally it allows those staying a shorter period chance to change their mind as well at last min if they want to without the well you only paid for 3 nights.......

MumPod · 11/12/2023 15:47

If the plan was for everyone to stay for a week and it was booked on that principal then that's what they should pay. Shared between the guests and equally. Whether they stay for the week or 3 days.
