Booking a week long holiday in a lodge with family. But some are only staying a few days .

Hi so 5 of us are going away in total for a week in a holiday home. 3 people have said they only want to do 3 nights now. Which is fine by us, we still want to go for the week. The total cost of the stay £1550 .

How would you decide how much they should pay ? Maybe this is more of a maths question actually 🤣🤯

Its not exactly fair on the people staying longer to have to pay for a bigger property than they need as some people have changed their minds

Actually this. It depends on the original agreement.

But if you were doing it by the number of nights it's easier now we know it is actually 6 nights not 7. So two people pay for 6 and three pay for 3. Two pay double the other three. Which comes down to sevenths. 3 pay 1/7 and 2 pay 2/7 which is a simplification of the PPs sums over 21.

So 1500/7 is 214.29
2 pay 428.58 so 857.16
3 pay 214.29 642.87
Total 1500 plus 3p!

This is why kids are taught to show their working!!

My sum was correct based on a week being 7 nights. 2 people would have paid 7x (1500/23) and 3 people would have paid 3x (1500/23)
Divided by 23 because that's the total number of nights (3 staying 3 nights and 2 staying 7).

I rounded the cost per night down so they would have owed a fiver extra at the end.

1500/23 is 65.21
65.21 x 7 is 456.47
65.21 x 3 is 195.63

So 912.94 from the week long people and 586.89 from the 3 nighters equals 1499.83.

Irrelevant though as we then found out it's 6 nights not 7.

I interpreted the title and op slightly differently - that they are still in the ‘booking’ stages.

so the group initially discussed a week stay, but now - before it has been booked - 3 have decided they don’t want to or can’t do the full week and have asked to shorten tge trip. One couple still wants to go away for a week.

if that is the case then it’s not fair for the 3 to subsidise the longer stay as they’ve spoken up in time to change the plan. The 2 should either cover the additional nights themselves or move to a smaller accommodation for their extended stay.

if I’ve read it wrong though ignore me!

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 08/12/2023 04:52

What is the cost of booking it for the three nights? Often a three night break isn’t that much cheaper than a weeks booking especially over the weekend also if they agreed to book a full week then they should be liable for the costs. If I booked a lodge and went home after 3 days they wouldn’t refund me the difference.

possibly the 3 nighters pay £300 each and week people £325 or if that sounds unfair £250 to the 3 nighters and £400 for the week people.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 08/12/2023 05:09

Everyone who was party to the original agreement should pay an equal share, whether they use the accommodation for the whole week or part of it or decide not to turn up at all.

Roselilly36 · 08/12/2023 06:34

Depends on the basis of the booking, if you were hiring the accommodation to share for a week, then the costs should be split evenly. The fact they have now decided to spend a few day is down to them. If they were only going to spend 3 nights originally then pro rata the cost.

Soontobe60 · 07/12/2023 23:28

I disagree. If all parties planned to stay for a week initially, then the place was chosen on that basis but some changed their minds later, all parties should pay an equal amount regardless of how many nights they stay.

This!!

If they'd said up front about 3 days then yes apportion accordingly but if it's after booking then they pay their equal share. Others shouldn't now have to pay "extra" because they've changed their minds.

PrinnyPree · 08/12/2023 23:03

How are the rooms being divvied up OP?

rookiemere · 09/12/2023 08:24

I would check how much the same lodge cost for 3 nights - it's often a lot cheaper for staying the week, so for 3 nights the lodge probably costs £1000.
The people staying 3 nights shouldn't get much of a discount, maybe a little if you want to stay friends with them, I'd see how much the 3 nights would be for their bedrooms and charge them that.

Jcf1977 · 10/12/2023 17:46

I would perhaps book somewhere for 3 nights and move on as a couple to have a couple of nights in a hotel. If this isn’t an option I would split it like this
6nights one room (you)
3 nights one room (couple)
3 nights one room (single)
(presuming that’s the split)
thats 12 nights
129 per room per night

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 10/12/2023 18:02

Title implies it’s not been booked yet.

Mum2three63 · 10/12/2023 18:42

How does this add up?

Beachywave · 10/12/2023 19:14

Are all five people adults? I’d probably split per adult per night rather than per person if there are children involved.

Boysnme · 10/12/2023 19:58

Can you hire the place for 3 nights only?

if so I’d check the cost of that and split that between 5.

Then I’d split the cost of the difference between the week cost vs the 3 nights cost between the remaining 2.

it’s often not as expensive to stay for longer and if you were all only going for 3 nights that’s the price you’d be splitting.

jrother · 10/12/2023 21:04

Total cost = £1550/6 nights = £158.33 per night total

3 night stay =£775 total

First 3 nights
5x people's staying 3 nights=
5/£775= £155 pp

Second 3 nights
2 people staying 6 nights=
first 3 night=£155pp
second 3 nights = £775/2= £387.50

people staying 3 nights =
£155
£155
£155

people staying 6 nights =
£155 + £387.50 = £542.50
£155 + £387.50= £542.50

total £1550

I agree with this.

If you want everyone to contribute proportionally to the nights they stay:
Work out 1550/7 for the amount per night, then work out everyone's nightly total by splitting each night by the number of people staying. So divide it by 3 when there are 5 people and by 2 when there are 2 people. Everyone pays their share of each night they stay.

Alternatively everyone pays £1550/5 because you would have booked differently if you'd known in advance that some people only wanted 3 nights.

Torganer · 10/12/2023 22:30

What are the rooms like? The people staying longer could have the bigger rooms/en suite etc. then just even it out

TrifleLayer · 10/12/2023 22:44

People should not change their minds about nights unless an emergency. If no emergency it should be split equally.

HMW1906 · 10/12/2023 23:14

£1550 divided by 21 (the total number of nights (2x6 + 3x3)) = £74 per person per night

6 night people pay = £444
3 night people pay = £222

Total payment £1554

OftIwandered · 11/12/2023 00:17

Not sure how some people are calculating that the folk staying for 6 nights should pay more than twice as much as the folk staying 3 nights!?

wildwestpioneer · 11/12/2023 00:32

Did they initially all agree to the full week, agree a price and the property?

TrailingFig · 11/12/2023 00:36

Is it Airbnb? Is there a cleaning fee included in this?

Marmighty · 11/12/2023 00:42

Use mumsnet to learn how to be a CF -ignore duration of stay and just split total equally by number of adults, if some have changed their minds after booking. Then invite other friends to join you when the others leave, charge them too and pocket it so you get a completely free stay

LadyPenelope68 · 11/12/2023 06:53

If some have changed their mind since booking, then the whole cost is just split equally do £1550 divided by 5. It’s not fair to those wanting to stay the week (as planned) that some have dropped out.
