What European city with teenagers

KingCatMeowInSpace · 01/12/2023 19:59

It's my DH's 50th next year and he'd like a family holiday- 2 teenagers of 15 and 17. He's said somewhere in Europe. We dont want high end shops or beaches but we do like lots of small independent type stores and some nice sights to see and lots of coffee shops n cafes. I've no idea where to start. Any suggestions?

What about Munich? A lovely city

ragdollyanna1974 · 01/12/2023 21:02

My teens love Amsterdam. We've been a few times.
Trains are fantastic, so you can travel to The Hague etc very easily.

XmasEveshopper · 01/12/2023 21:03

How long are you going for? You could combine Rome with Florence or Rome and Naples/Pompeii and the Amalfi coast. Trains are very fast and easy for getting around

Bluemacaroons · 01/12/2023 21:03

Rome, Florence or Venice. Italy is basically unbeatable for city breaks if you want good food, famous locations and great weather. Florence and Venice have the additional benefit of being small enough to stroll around

Wbeezer · 01/12/2023 21:04

My teens really liked Berlin and Copenhagen, not quite so keen on Amsterdam but loved Leiden.

Any particular sights you want to see? Galleries, buildings, monuments?
Any preferred countries?
I'd throw Venice, Vienna or Prague into the mix.

No particular countries or sights of choice - his only birthday request 'must have' is well known sights.

Rome or Athens.

I'm thinking a week at Easter

Budapest is lovely, not quite as expensive so you can eat /stay in nicer places

Different option and most love it or hate it! Naples this summer was a real hit with our teens, a bit gritty but they loved the party atmosphere of the evenings. Day trip to Capri with an all an all day boat tour, Pompeii and Versuvius.

Lujublujana- amazing food with a great food market once a week, some interesting artitecture and a castle, and close enough for a day trip to lake bled

Athens is fantastic. It has everything, iconic sights, beautiful riviera, chilled vibe and great food scene. Lots of eating in pavement bars. Pretty islands within a couple of hours on the ferry. And not too pricy. Highly recommended

Not a city, but loads to do in Gibraltar, and shopping too.

Dublin is also full of activities.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 01/12/2023 21:46

Porto or Nice

Dancingonaslice · 01/12/2023 21:47

Paris or Rome would get my vote.

But not sure I’d want a week in any European city tbh- they are very much long weekend type destinations so you might want to consider a two site holiday eg Barcelona and go to the coast for a couple of days or Port Aventura or Ferrari Land as well.

I'm planning on Athens next spring with our 15yo.

We did Sorrento this Easter - fabulous. Great vibe, food and places to visit.

Florence is the most beautiful place on earth.

Paris every time. Easy to get to, chock full of wonderful iconic sights, beautiful architecture everywhere you look, fabulous wine and packed with glorious cafes and restaurants. The Eiffel tower twinkling away at night, riverboat cruise, incredible museums, walking tour round Monmatre, the buzz of seeing the Mona Lisa, a day trip on the train to beautiful Chantilly to see the racecourse, it just goes on and on. It's not cheap though. No bargains to be had in Paris but it's well worth it.

You can definitely spend a week in Athens @KingCatMeowInSpace . We spent 6 nights and have happily spent the same again. If you go you could spend a couple of nights on Hydra, a perfect island with no cars.

homemadepopcorn · 01/12/2023 21:52

Seville!

I'd totally disagree with this. I always go for as many nights as I can because we prefer to take cities at a relaxed space and have time to just soak in the atmosphere and not run round chasing our tails. We recently went to Venice but only went for 3 nights and it wasn't anything like long enough. So we are going back, next time for 5 nights

That all sounds great - you think 5 days would be too long?

We love a relaxed pace too

Prague for sure! 🤩

SpottyElephant · 01/12/2023 22:01

I’d come on to say Athens too. We really enjoyed it - much more than we thought, and we preferred Porto to Lisbon.
