Summer walking holiday for adults in the Alps by train from London

I'm trying to work out the best way to do this. We'd like to avoid car hire at the destination and be able to get into the mountains easily to walk. And to keep journey times to a minimum (I know going by train will take longer).

One option seems to be daytime trains to French alps and then a resort like Chamonix. Any advice on the best route, or good resorts for public transport and cable cars etc so you don't need a car, would be great.

Another option might be a night train to the Austrian Alps via eg Munich. I've browsed maninseat61 who makes it sound doable but other sites say they sell out as soon as they go on sale and the actual booking sites look quite confusing so I don't know how you plan round that or co-ordinate with Eurostar which go on sale earlier?

It is just for me and dh. We like walking, running, swimming, he might mountain bike, I like the odd sauna. Less bothered about fancy restaurants or accommodation but like a good night's sleep.

Anyone done similar? I'd love to hear.

the Station in Embrun is in the town and you can cycle or walk from there. Lots of options. Several good VTT /mountain biking opportunities. To be honest I’m sure you will have a fantastic time wherever you go. Is he an experienced mountain biker? If not you’ll be fine out of season on usual tracks/following local guides. And you could accompany him on an eVTT.

Thanks for these posts everyone!

Sorry, my post below was misleading. Mountain biking was always part of the idea but he is keener for it to be a bigger part that I realised (while not compromising my holiday fun - the walking does need to be good). @ChateauMargaux will dm you!

@Radiatorvalves I am starting to think we will have a great time wherever, yes! There is almost too much choice especially once you start adding in maybe a day or two in Paris or Brussels or Munich en route.

dh has mountain biked before in places like Snowdonia. He'd like a lesson or to join a taught group for anything tricky. I find it terrifying so no amount of electricity will help me 😁.

Curve ball alert! But a slightly cheaper, less crowded option.
Train: London to Paris & Paris to Freiburg im Breisgau -Germany, Black Forrest. From there local train to somewhere like Kirchzarten. There you'll get a ticket called Konuskarte to use on local public transport throughout your stay. They have an extended timetable for buses during peak season especially for hiking (Wander Bus).

PS: we got caught out on the German Alps suggestion... waiting for a bus that never arrived!

This really is an amazing thread! I reckon I've got many holidays here, and hope others do too, keep 'em coming. Thanks for all the ideas and the details.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen which is about an hour from Munich offers access to the Tyrol and seems to have plenty of options for walking. I was there last year, though for the Passion Play in Oberammergau.
