I'm trying to work out the best way to do this. We'd like to avoid car hire at the destination and be able to get into the mountains easily to walk. And to keep journey times to a minimum (I know going by train will take longer).
One option seems to be daytime trains to French alps and then a resort like Chamonix. Any advice on the best route, or good resorts for public transport and cable cars etc so you don't need a car, would be great.
Another option might be a night train to the Austrian Alps via eg Munich. I've browsed maninseat61 who makes it sound doable but other sites say they sell out as soon as they go on sale and the actual booking sites look quite confusing so I don't know how you plan round that or co-ordinate with Eurostar which go on sale earlier?
It is just for me and dh. We like walking, running, swimming, he might mountain bike, I like the odd sauna. Less bothered about fancy restaurants or accommodation but like a good night's sleep.
Anyone done similar? I'd love to hear.
