Take a 3 month old, or a 10 month old?

We can book whichever and move the date only paying the £25 admin charge. Just wondering which you would opt for. Holiday would be all inclusive. Flight about 3 hours.

Thank you

3 month! At 10 months they want to be up and about and May even be walking!

rainbow616 · 22/10/2023 14:40

10 month old, definitely!

I did think this! Least at 3 months they’ll be still

Depends on where you are going! But generally 3 months old, especially if you are planning to breastfeed. But both ages are fine don’t go anywhere too hot though.

cariadlet · 22/10/2023 14:52

Dd was 3 months old for her first holiday and 11 months old for the 2nd. Both were long haul flights.

3 months was such an easy age: we were both over the exhausting newborn stage; sleep was ok; she wasn't mobile; she was pretty easy to entertain.

She was ebf which also made everything much easier.

Probably Greece but out of season, will be 22-24 degrees

Thank you! Part of me worries it’ll be too young but it might also be the easiest time

Definitely when baby is 10mths old, when mine were just 3mths old it was so much easier to be at home. Many congratulations OP Flowers

10 month old.
At 3 months DS1 just screamed, didn't sleep for more than an hour at a time, and was generally miserable!

Nodashians · 22/10/2023 16:03

3 months, I travelled with my DC when they were 10 weeks and had lovely holidays. The only bad holiday I had was when my DC was 8 months and had just crawling and pulling himself up. Our apartment had marble floors and it was a nightmare.

We’ve just been away and saw a couple of babies that age who did seem constantly unsettled in the restaurants etc but maybe that’s just the snippet we saw.

Thank you! It’s interesting how these replies are so split, wasn’t expecting that

You’ll probably have to wait and see what sort of baby you get!!

Thank you, did think this but would rather start the payments now rather than when money is less on Mat leave

We have 3 kids and took them all on their 1st holiday at 12 weeks - so easy as they sleep a lot and aren't mobile at this stage.

reluctantbrit · 23/10/2023 17:39

DD was still in the middle of silent reflux, night waking and really bad colic. And we went to visit family for 10 days (2 sets in 2 towns). Worst decision of my life.

We went to Cornwall, s/c, when she was 9 months and got mobile. So much easier. Better sleep, you could do things with her, we had a great time.

If you go early, then go for an appartment with kitchenett. You can then get up early if needed, make yourself some food as the hotel breakfast isn't before 8am and you have space for the evening if your baby hates sleeping in the pram while you plan to sip drinks at the bar.

Xmasbaby11 · 23/10/2023 17:44

3 months. Easy stage for most babies - still sleep loads, no solids, not mobile.

of course it depends on the actual baby but based on the average baby.

BarbieKew · 23/10/2023 17:50

3 months.

Our holiday with a newly crawling, danger grabbing, object eating, sleep resisting 10 month old was a nightmare.

At least at 3 months the food situation is easy, and they’re not trying to wriggle out of a pram every 5 minutes.

minipie · 23/10/2023 17:55

If you don’t have the baby yet and so have no idea what kind of baby you will have… I’d pick 10 months.

There is a huge huge range at 3 months old between “sleeps great with one wake up, naps in buggy so parents can go to lunch/dinner” and “doesn’t sleep anywhere reliably, parents are zombies”.

Much less of a range at 10 months - still a range of course but generally less risk of being zombie like by then.

I couldn’t even have contemplated a holiday at 3 months with DC1. Could’ve done it with DC2 but would not have enjoyed. 10 months would’ve been hard work due to more need to entertain/keep active/watch if moving but also quite fun.

TheBirdintheCave · 23/10/2023 18:00

10 months.

It will be 3 months for us next year though 😂 Fingers crossed this one follows their brother in sleep habits! 🙏🏻

Sparehair · 23/10/2023 18:13

3 months. Dd could walk at 10mo and was a total liability. We went to Cambodia when ds was 3 mo and it was lovely. We just took a pop up tent.

Orangello · 23/10/2023 19:35

3 definitely. They won't move and at least mine slept anywhere. Whereas at 9-10 months, DS woke every 45 minutes through the night and whined the rest of the time. Fun.

Summerscoming23 · 23/10/2023 19:38

We took our 10 month old and it was great - he wasn't mobile though...at 3 months he wouldn't have been any easier due to being so small etc - sterilising is also a bigger issue at 3 months thsn 10 - unless breast feeing obviously .

LeonBlack · 23/10/2023 19:40

We did our first long haul with a baby when he was 9 months. He wasn’t crawling though so it was super easy.

I’d say either age is fine. We’ve since done every age and every stage and it’s all been a doddle.

TheChosenTwo · 23/10/2023 19:46

If it’s not more than about 4 hours on a plane I’d prefer to have taken a 10 month old.
Usually not walking (though mine were all crawling by that age and pulling themselves up), can be distracted waiting for meals with a break stick, can just eat proper food, reliably nap during the day and sleep properly at night (well, mine did!), love being in the water and it tires them out.
We took one of ours away when they were about 6 weeks, she had colic which began while away and it was pure misery for the next 2 months. Wouldn’t fancy that on holiday.
