BA long-haul economy. Can I get drinks throughout the flight ?

Or only when they serve food ? Its a 10hour flight. I've never seen a menu with prices on-board in economy.

They serve drinks. I fly economy to west coast of the US fairly frequently (9-10 hours) in economy. They wander through with water and juice usually in addition to the drinks trolley.

Or in the galley, they usually have drinks (water or juice) just available, or they'll give you what you ask for.

fishfingersandtoes · 08/10/2023 08:39

Yes they give out water & juice throughout the flight (in quite small cups). If you're really thirsty you can ask for more and they'll give you it.

notimagain · 08/10/2023 08:44

Agree with above replies (unless it has changed recently).

Outside of meal service periods there is often a routine juice and/or water round and you can always ask - there are also often trays of water and juice in glasses in the galley if you are happy to self serve.

Icedlatteplease · 08/10/2023 08:48

Worth remembering you can always take an empty bottle of water and fill it after security. Last time I flew I took a 2 litre collapsible bottle.

MartyFunkhouser · 08/10/2023 08:51

They do a bar service shortly after take-off and then again when the main meal is served. Then they’ll serve coffee or tea.

You can pop to the galley at any time the seatbelt lights are off and ask for drinks. But as others have mentioned, they come round quite frequently with water and juice.

I was thinking more alcoholic drinks !

Which airline are you flying? Some have the apps that you order on now.

Literally tells you in the title!

I can’t think of anything worse than arriving at my destination after a 10 hour flight having had drinks. You feel far better the day after if you maintain proper hydration, avoid the alcohol and opt for a 2l bottle of water instead.

BruceAndNosh · 08/10/2023 09:06

I've seen them OK about giving you 2 drinks with your meal "for later"

Plenty of passengers make regular trips to the galley throughout the flight for just that!

Totalwasteofpaper · 08/10/2023 09:10

Yes they include alcohol but honestly I wouldn't expect to be drowning in free booze.
They are pretty cheap /reluctant with alcohol even in business (I fly for work)
I'd stick to spirits the wines are normally mediocre at best.

On the flip side my opinion is drinking on flights just isn't worth the hanging over which is MUCH worse due to altitude and air cabin dryness/dehydration.

StillWantingADog · 08/10/2023 09:11

Yes IME they come round quite often with juice and water. But you will always be able to get something if you go to the galley and ask.

Not so sure these days with general cuts they might restrict that to meal service only. Ps you cannot drink duty free booze.

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 08/10/2023 09:34

You can also stand up and go and ask for drinks (soft or alcoholic) any time and they’ll give to you.

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 08/10/2023 09:34

(If you are scared of flying they’re usually more generous with the wine! I’ve never been turned down a few glasses because I tell them I’m scared of flying and it calms me. Which is true!)

JesusHRooseveltChristAgain · 08/10/2023 09:40

I've never seen a menu with prices on-board in economy.

Does this mean you've never flown economy?
Why do you want to drink all through a long-haul flight?
Anyway, I'm sure you can press your call bell to order drinks.

Edit: ok I think I understand now... do they give free drinks throughout the flight?

Get two with your meal and save one, then as others have said go to the galley. But depends on how busy it is, easier to do on a night flight.

Silkiebunny · 08/10/2023 13:46

You normally get a drink served to you then a drink with dinner then drink with next meal. If you want more than that can go to back of flight and ask for more. Its fine with non alcoholic, alcoholic I think they may take a view on whether consumption is excessive.

notimagain · 08/10/2023 16:21

Realistically I don't think crews will see a problem if it's a handful (and I'm not going to define "handful") of small wines/beers spaced out over the multiple hours of a long haul sector and there's adequate stock in the trollies - running dry has been known.

Of course OTOH if an individual's consumption is genuinely up at a level that they are viewed as actually being in danger of being drunk on board then that's another matter.

BackToWhereItAllBegan · 08/10/2023 17:01

Flew on BA long haul this week, the passenger next to me asked for two bottles of wine every time there was drinks service (I think 3 times in an 8 hour flight) and was given them, no questions asked.

TizerorFizz · 08/10/2023 17:16

And then the crew have to deal with passengers who want a piss when it’s prep for landing! Or get argumentative. Alcohol and flying is usually a bad idea plus it dehydrates.

notimagain · 08/10/2023 17:30

I appreciate there is an idiot fringe that makes the papers but my experience over the years working in the airline industry (Long Haul) was that the vast vast vast vast majority of passengers who do drink some alcohol whilst on board manage their consumption perfectly well, don't rush for the loo pre-landing, and don't get into arguments....

Choux · 08/10/2023 17:41

What are you looking to drink and how much? I've no idea about spirits but you get 175ml of wine pre food then another 175ml with the food itself. Am sure if you asked for 2 x 175ml with the meal that would be ok. After that you go the galley for food and drinks and they will probably decide based on how you tipsy appear.

They give a 20 minute warning near the end of the flight that the seat belt sign sign is coming on so there is time to get the last loo trip in. Unless there is turbulence of course and then the sign could come on at any time!

TizerorFizz · 08/10/2023 20:34

@notimagain Theres “some” alcohol and then there’s lots of alcohol consumed in larger quantities on a 10 hour flight. . BA use older planes on some routes for a reason.
