How do you leave your house before you go on holiday?

AJOC · 06/08/2023 07:38

I'm the sort of person who has to come home to an immaculate house! Clean bed sheets, hoover lines, mopping us out of the house sort of thing!
DH really doesn't mind how the house presents when we return! He thinks mopping us out of the house is an unnecessary stress added to the already stressful task of packing for a family of 4.

Just curious to see if anyone else shares my passion for a deep clean before going on holiday or am I OTT and should help more with the loading of the car and come back to whatever state the house is in lol

I aim to leave it tidy but “on time” is more my bag 😂

FergusSingsTheBIues · 06/08/2023 07:40

No, I’m the same and yes I change the sheets, throw dettol down the toilets and make sure the washing’s is all
up to date. I leave it spotless and each time I come home I am really pleased I did it. Especially after a long journey.

DustyLee123 · 06/08/2023 07:41

It gets dusty while you’re away, so I clean the week before I go, bleach down the loos and that’s it.

FergusSingsTheBIues · 06/08/2023 07:42

Actually mopping your way out of the house is pretty crazy on second thoughts - but I remember that Kim from Jim and Aggie saying she hoovered her way to the front door!

Selfesteem23 · 06/08/2023 07:44

We do leave a tidy clean house. I love coming back to it. It’s not a particularly dusty house and we keep on top of cleaning anyway.

Daisyhillsareblooming · 06/08/2023 07:45

Wow, I consider myself to be pretty house proud but hoovering your way out is crazy , not a fan of those hoover lines and can’t stand that plumped up cushion with a dent in the middle look .

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 06/08/2023 07:45

I wouldn't mop my way out of the way door and totally agree with your DH that it's completely unnecessary.

I do vacuum, wash dishes and strip/re-make beds and make the sure the house is clean, but we have three cats who are left home alone with a pet-sitter so there's no point mopping floors or anything like that.

AJOC · 06/08/2023 07:45

Yes, I suppose sending the family to eat a snack in the car whilst I'm mopping us out is a bit daft 🤣 everything up until that point though makes perfect sense to me lol!

I used to be like you @AJOC but now I don't really care as I know that I will do it all over again when I get back. I think I have finally got over the "what would people think if you were in an accident " line I was brought up with.

LizaTarbuckForQueen · 06/08/2023 07:55

Clean house from top to bottom the day before leaving.

Cleaner down the loo, change bed, cushions plumped, bins emptied, drain unblocker down the sinks etc on the day of leaving.

Wheatear · 06/08/2023 07:59

That sounds completely mad to me. I can see ‘reasonably clean and clean bed linen’, but hoover lines and mopping yourself out the door (before doing what with the mop? Balancing it against the wall just inside the door? Throwing it into a flowerbed? Taking it on holiday with you?) is deeply weird.

StarlightLady · 06/08/2023 08:05

It's never cleaner than when I return from holiday or a work trip. Mind you, friends call me Ms Demestos.

AJOC · 06/08/2023 08:07

🤣🤣 I think as my Dad would always mop us out of the house, I've adopted the weird tradition!

In my defence, it was raining when we were loading the car and multiple trips back and forth with shoes on had left wet foot prints in the hallway! A sight I'd decided I wasn't prepared to leave! I'd mopped the kitchen floor earlier that morning so just mopped the hallway as we walked out!

Unfortunately for the mop, it had to stay home!!

Our cleaner still comes while we are away. Perfect solution Grin

Me too.
It’s so nice to come back to a clean and tidy house.

😍 the dream!!!
I think this will be my solution to DH if he wants me to stop with the cleaning and help with the loading!

empty bin, dishwasher empty or on, empty fridge. Hide suitcases from cat. Clean sheets on bed if have time. It’s usually fairly tidy anyway.

Mopping out of door…unlikely I’d say.

Raaasaur · 06/08/2023 08:12

I mop out the door too. It’s so lovely coming home to a lovely clean, tidy house.

My children even commented on how lovely it was after our most recent holiday.

Yourebeingtooloud · 06/08/2023 08:12

I leave it clean and tidy (& the cleaner usually comes when we’re away) and am completely on board with the clean bedsheets but mopping yourself out and prioritising that over helping to get ready is mad.

sandgrown · 06/08/2023 08:13

Clean but it often looks like it’s been burgled. Saves them the bother😂

PetitPorpoise · 06/08/2023 08:14

I'm on holiday now and I cleaned the day before but it's not what I could call 'immaculate' and I certainly wouldn't be 'mopping us out of the house'.

I think I would find that really annoying if I was married to you.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/08/2023 08:14

For those of you who change the beds, doesn’t that mean that you come home to laundry baskets full of dirty bedding? I’d hate that on top of the holiday dirty laundry.

I’ll change our beds a couple of days before we go but as we’re leaving at 6am for our holiday there’s no chance that 4 beds will be changed, washed and dried on the day that we go ready to have a clean bed to come back to.

HillyHollock · 06/08/2023 08:14

I leave my house spotless but less for a clean welcome home than because, in case I die while away, no one has to clean my mess (or say "gosh Hilly was a real slob!" - which would actually be accurate 😳)

Hbh17 · 06/08/2023 08:15

Just normal - tidy, but obsessive cleaning is bonkers (as it always is). And my cleaner is usually in while we're away, so she will decide if anything/what needs doing.

MoonLion · 06/08/2023 08:16

I'm with your DH.
