Would you travel to a Greece this weekend

With other islands also on high alert for fires, would you travel to one of them this weekend? We are due to fly on Sunday to Crete with teen DS, DH says it's ok as no fires have on the island but seeing the news has just made me think it is a bad idea. How do others feel? Anyone else travelling there this weekend?

Personally I wouldn’t, but there aren’t currently any restrictions, so you can officially go

happywotsit · 25/07/2023 06:48

I would go. The fires are not on Crete. If anything changes presumably you will be informed. The UK has fires burning also has fires. Its not just Greece.

You could ask your operator if you can change destination but sadly, fires can happen anywhere. Temperatures are to drop by the weekend.

Campervangirl · 25/07/2023 06:49

Family live in Crete, no fires yet.
I'd still go if I were you

Icequeen01 · 25/07/2023 07:07

We are due to go to Crete next week and unless anything drastic changes we will be going.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 25/07/2023 07:11

We are travelling independently staying in a friends villa so no tour operator support. We are close to a small town so not remote up a hill or anything and we have been many times. It does give me some piece of mind that we know the area well. We will also have a car. I guess we just need to keep up with any changes or news before we travel.

I would go. As you have seen on TV, tour operator support tends to vanish in times of trouble anyway. Travel insurance is a must of course.

Crete is over 200 miles from Rhodes.

Wild fires break out in Greece every year, but this year it has been worse than usual.

Delphigirl · 25/07/2023 07:39

I’m in Greece. It is hot but fine where I am. I would go. Make sure you connect to a local phone network (ie don’t put yourself on Wi-Fi only) as then you will get fire warning and evacuation messages appropriate for your specific area. You don’t want a fire to whip up at night nearby without you knowing.

Remmy123 · 25/07/2023 07:48

Yes I wouid go

Bobbybobbins · 25/07/2023 07:54

Yes I would go

Beachside82 · 25/07/2023 07:54

Hell yes I would go

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 25/07/2023 07:58

Yes I would go.

My DSD is working out in Kefalonia at the moment and is not having any issues there. I think you need to be proportionate about this, read the government guidance, be sensible but go, enjoy and have fun.

geoger · 25/07/2023 08:16

Please go and enjoy your holiday. Greek news is saying today and Weds will be extremely hot but by Thursday temps should drop by 10 degrees

whiteroseredrose · 25/07/2023 08:31

DS is booked to go to Rhodes as part of a big group in a couple of weeks. Not far from where the fires are now.

The consensus seems to be that they will play it by ear. If there is still an apartment, a source of food and flights, they may still go.

Usernamen · 25/07/2023 08:55

Yes, definitely go.

Hadalifeonce · 25/07/2023 08:59

DD flew to Corfu yesterday, no problems.

Maddy70 · 25/07/2023 10:09

Yes if course. Greece and other Mediterranean countries are always on alert for fires every summer. This one it appears was caused by arson locals know you don't BBQ or have naked flames in the country area for that reason.

It's as safe to travel now as it has been in any summer

Qilin · 25/07/2023 10:12

Greece is a big place, so it would depend on where and if it was an area that was affected.

I've been to California when there were large wild fires and sand fires going on. But we were miles away and unaffected, so it never crossed our minds not to go.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 25/07/2023 17:12

Thank you all for the reassurance it has made me feel less anxious about it all. I will be keeping a close watch on the news for any changes to the situation. Weather forecast seems to indicate a drop in temperatures from Thursday which is also good news.

In Crete at the mo, on extreme alert level but none on the island thank goodness.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 25/07/2023 17:17

No I would absolutely not travel to any Greek Islands. Don't want to become a burden on the local emergency services or become a statistic.

Wonder if all the people confidently saying this would actually be doing cancelling a holiday on a totally separate island if they had a non-refundable £5000 holiday. Suspect they mostly wouldn't.

People still going to Rhodes feels risky and silly. Booking a new holiday to Greece to travel right now the same. But while the advice remains as it is, the vast majority of people would travel..

Indeed I have no intention of becoming either believe me, hence my concern and thread. I will be keeping a close watch on the news.

Yes it's all very scary. Stay safe 💐

Eastern part of Crete is on level 5 alert reducing to level 4 probably as the temperature reduces. The other part (Chania region) is on level 4 This happens every year when temperatures rise and we never hear anything about it. It essentially reminds locals of sensible do’s and don’t and puts local fire volunteer’s on standby. Closes some gorges etc. Fires can start at anytime anywhere even in this country when it’s hot.
On Twitter you can follow 112 Greece to get any evacuation alerts in the event of any fires if you are really worried
