Sardinia

Sitting looking at the rain and dreaming about our holiday next year! We are hoping to go to Sardinia, for 7-10 days in July. DC will be 7 and 4.

We enjoy days on the beach and at the pool, strolling around old towns plus day trips in a hire car to see interesting sights. So a bit of variety is important. Nice restaurants we can walk to in the evening.

We normally go for self catering. However next year DH has a special birthday so we would possibly like to stay in a hotel with breakfast (not all inclusive).

Does anyone have any recommendations? For area and/or hotel? It’s important that it is family friendly.

We stayed at Janna e Sole last year. It was very family friendly with kids club and a good playground. There’s not a lot to do on foot apart from the beach and a port 25 minutes walk away so you might want to consider hiring a car if you stay there. Unless you’re mainly after beach and pool then it’s perfect.

What sort of budget would you like to spend? There’s lots of lovely hotels in Sardinia.

We’ve loved our visits to the Pula area but also others - with an idea of budget I can give a better list of recs

Turid · 24/07/2023 18:03

Thanks for the replies!

Our budget is no more than 2k for a week for accommodation. Don’t mind sharing a room with the kids but would prefer two bedrooms rather than just a sofabed.

Alghero would tick all your boxes. I’ve only stayed in self-catering there though.

Ohyousillydivvy · 24/07/2023 18:27

Sardinia is also struggling with a heart wave this year with temperatures upwards of 35 degrees. I imagine it will be similar next year, maybe October half term would be more manageable temperature wise. We're going to Morocco for this October half term & it'll be 15 degrees cooler than now. It will still be in the mid 20s so comfortable to go out and about.

cherryassam · 24/07/2023 19:42

Some hotels / resorts to check out:

Lantana Resort, Pula - family rooms or also serviced apartments as part of the resort.

cherryassam · 24/07/2023 19:54

Pressed post too quickly!

Also:

Is Morus Relais, Pula
Calle Della Torre, La Caletta
Hotel Calabona, Alghero
Hotel Cormoran, Villasimius
Smy Carlos V, Alghero

Turid · 24/07/2023 19:59

@vincettenoir that place looks beautiful! Unfortunately out of our price range. Maybe one day!

@MinnieMountain I‘ve seen Alghero mentioned a few times in my searches. It definitely looks like the type of place we would enjoy

@cherryassam thanks so much! Will check them out

@Ohyousillydivvy that is a good point. I‘d definitely be up for October half term if it will be too hot to do anything in July

We go quite often, usually in June. It's hot but not unbearable (we take kids, 6 and 8, out of school).

We love Cala Gonone. You do need a hire car for the several nearby beaches dotted north of the village, there's a couple of caves (grotta de bue marino by boat and grotte de ispignoli in the mountains), several nearby Nuraghe sites, you can hire small ribs and explore the bay (amazing experience), though there's also little taxi boats that can drop you off for day trips at otherwise quite unreachable beaches such as Cala Luna, Cala Mariolu.

It's not a big resort but a somewhat touristy village so several supermarkets, lots of pizzerias all along the sea front, a small town beach that's walkable and perfectly nice (though not as good as the beaches between Cala gonone and Orosei). You can kayak/canoe on Lago Cedrino if you fancy. The surrounding area is spectacularly beautiful - just driving the SS125 south is enjoyable.

Crystal clear water, friendly people, restaurants aren't crazy prices (pay much more for ice cream here for example). It's a lovely spot. We don't come across many British people, seems to be more German/Dutch/Scandinavian/French and Swiss tourists.

cherryassam · 24/07/2023 20:08

You’ll deffo get more for your money in October too! But it’s worth thinking about how much you’ll want to be in pool / on the beach - it’s much cooler in October and usually probably too cool for a non-heated pool, sunbathing etc.

You could think about May half term too - we’ve been mid-May and it was just about warm enough for non-heated pools for us.

Blueey · 24/07/2023 20:08

Should say grotte di ispinigole

MissAmbrosia · 24/07/2023 20:09

Cala di Falco in Cannigione. Lots of shops and restos within walking distance and you can do self catering and also sign up for different food packages.

NormalForNuneaton · 24/07/2023 20:55

Another vote for Alghero. It's a place that we'd love to go back to

We rented an apartment though so can't recommend any hotels

creasedclothes · 25/07/2023 19:37

Santa Teresa di Gallura is a beautiful little seaside town but generally you are spoilt for choice when in comes to amazing coastline. The beaches are really world class, especially the north east coast.
I wouldn't go in October. It's not got same climate as say Cyprus where October is reliably still 30 degrees and it doesn't have the same attractions as Sicily that mean the island is tourist ready year round.

theresnolimits · 25/07/2023 19:44

We love Sardinia. But we went once to Alghero in the school hols and the beach was impossible. Italians love the beach and you literally couldn’t move. It’s full of Italian second homes. Spent the entire time at the pool. We hired a car for a few days and found more deserted beaches but no facilities.

We’ve been in October and May and had some pretty dodgy weather too. June or September ~ perfecto!

wowsaidtheowl · 26/07/2023 22:23

We’re in Sardinia at the moment and really, it’s not crazy busy at all. This is our closest beach - it’s beautiful, quiet. Temperature isn’t too hot and there’s an amazing breeze so we’re feeling pretty cool. Totally recommend it!

Thanks for the recommendations! I‘ve been researching lots and it’s been really helpful. We‘ve decided on Alghero but not settled on where to stay yet.

@wowsaidtheowl that looks beautiful! Where in Sardinia are you?

We’re on the east coast, Foxi Manna.

Hi all
we are going to Sardinia this weekend and just wondered if it’s worth taking some food with us like baked beans, canned tuna etc?
my 8 year old is autistic and quite rigid in terms of her food choices. For example she will only drink vimto squash. Taking 2 liters of vimto with us sounds ridiculous. Do they have something similar in their supermarkets? She also will only eat cheerios for breakfast (with only British semi skimmed milk 🤦🏻‍♀️) Thanks

Eyeapple · 03/08/2023 08:49

It was crazy hot when we visited during the summer. Close to 40 so air con is a must. Alghero is very beautiful but personally I would never go back there in summer. Easter is when I would love to visit. Very pretty. Good restaurants. Nice beach although a bit smelly from some algae apparently.

I’ve two autistic kids who were very fussy as young kids with taste and particularly texture. My youngest discovered sushi over in Sardinia, Japanese is very popular and he discovered he absolutely loved it. Never in a billion years could we have seen that one coming. Anyway yes there are lots of small reasonably stocked supermarkets around. The milk was palatable to my two at least and not much different to ours. Don’t know about the vimto.

toddlermom99 · 03/08/2023 09:01

Porto Rotondo 100%!! Amazing little town with a real authentic Italian feel to it and the beaches are amazing too - white sand, crystal clear waters.

wowsaidtheowl · 03/08/2023 18:18

Just back from a supermarket in Sardinia - you’ll find tinned tuna easily and there are lots of canned beans but no Heinz type baked beans. Haven’t seen Vimto type drinks either.

wowsaidtheowl · 03/08/2023 18:18

Cheerios are available too!
