Cabin and hand luggage only

Hi all,

We have a holiday booked to Greece in 2 weeks for myself, husband and DD(7) almost 8. Holiday is 14 days.

My husband has long term chronic illness that can cause issues with long travel, but we are desperate for a holiday abroad, so have gone for it and tried to make it as smooth and easy as possible - I have booked it all myself airport parking, only 40 mins to local, small airport. Flight and then taxi for 25 mins to our self catering accommodation.

My question is, just throw at me what you take abroad that I will struggle with, regards hand luggage only (liquid limit 100ml bottles).

I have thought of the following
Soap (bar)
Shampoo and conditioner (bars)
Sun cream (sprays decanted into 100ml bottles)
Medicines we will consider obviously.

Am I missing anything?

I know perfume and make up but they don't bother me that much.

We all have 10kg cabin bag and 10kg hand luggage and fly with Ryanair. So 60KG in total.

Are they picky with bum bags and the shoulder cushions which we will wear if we need to add more "luggage (undies etc)" inside them.

Thanks if you read to here and have any suggestions on what to consider. ✌️

60kg! My husband and I go to Greece for 2 weeks every year with one 23kg case between us. This year it weighed in at 20.5kg at Gatwick.
Apart from hold luggage we just take an under the seat handbag size hand luggage each

greyhairnomore · 23/07/2023 20:01

You can buy sun cream at the airport after security.

99victoria · 23/07/2023 20:01

Sorry, that probably isn't very helpful. I'm just not sure what you're planning to take to fill 60kg of luggage. It will be very hot - you only need summer clothes and you can wash them out and they will dry quickly.

You can buy any toiletries you need there - no need to take big bottles of suncream etc with you.

I should say we have 60kg available to us. Not packed yet.

Are you sure you have 2 x 10kg each. It's usually just one small bag and one 10kg bag

Are they picky? Yes, very

You could order toiletries online to pick up at the airside Boots, that saves a lot of the stress around liquids etc

Katrinawaves · 23/07/2023 20:04

You will easily use a normal size bottle of sunscreen, maybe even 2 bottles, over 2 weeks for 3 people in a hot climate. So I would just buy full size bottles at the airport once you have gone through security and leave anything you don’t use behind when the holiday has finished.

I’d probably also buy a bottle of shampoo and shower gel as well mainly because I find shampoo bars absolutely ruin the condition of my hair and I like the ease of shower gel.

QuillBill · 23/07/2023 20:05

Yes, just get whatever you need after you have been through all the baggage stuff. Then you can have whatever you want.

Who are you flying with? Cabin bags have to be a certain size.

xyz111 · 23/07/2023 20:05

Put your liquids in your hold luggage not your hand luggage. Then take what you like!

Sorry, you're taking hand luggage only? Remember the hand luggage can only be like a handbag/ rucksack, not 2 suitcases. Make sure the liquid fits in the 20cm x20cm bag.

Sunnydays0101 · 23/07/2023 20:08

You will have plenty of room in your luggage. Since you are self-catering you will be able to do some laundry mid stay. Buy your sun cream after you go through security or when you arrive.

Can you do a shop when you arrive and buy toiletries, etc there.

Clymene · 23/07/2023 20:10

Medicine is excluded from the 100ml limit if you have a copy of your prescription. I'd buy stuff there to be honest - you must be in a town or have transport if you're self catering?

Sunnydays0101 · 23/07/2023 20:11

….We all have 10kg cabin bag and 10kg hand luggage and fly with Ryanair. So 60KG in total.,,

Actually, what do you mean by gnus - a cabin bag and hand luggage ? Is it a 10kg bag and then just a small bag that fits under your the seat in front of you ?

PurBal · 23/07/2023 20:11

Buy sunscreen at the airport. Do laundry at the accommodation.

noglow · 23/07/2023 20:12

In all honesty I'd buy soap there

happywotsit · 23/07/2023 20:21

Buy your toiletries once you have passed security. There is always a boots or superdrug. You can also order to click and collect. That saves worrying about liquid limits.

Then you just need clothes. Does your self catering place have a laundry? That makes it even easier. What about beach towels, do you need to take those?

Rainbowsandrainclouds1 · 23/07/2023 20:26

Whats the reason for not doing a hold bag? If its cost then okay but if its any other reason if the flight is busy they'll start putting any rollercases in the hold. So make sure all the non hold stuff like luthium batteries is in your carryone and that the suitcase is loackablr.

I was on a Ryan Air flight once where a guy had to carry a load of stuff, including a laptop onto the plane.

Yes sorry, it's a small bag to fit under the seat in front. Like a laptop bag or handbag. It has no weight limit associated so we were going to put all our heavy but small stuff in those. Happy to be proved wrong on the weight limit. Just checked again and it just states size (40x20x25cm).

I've got 3 X small soft shell bags.

I was thinking if a laptop bag is allowed a laptop is not light at all.

To get out of the airport quickly at either side really.

If you have rucksacks for your cabin luggage they are unlikely to put them in the hold. I've been in queues where the staff go along and select cabin bags to go in the hold on full flights, and they've only picked hard cases.

I didn't know I could do this. I will definitely click and collect from boots at the airport .

Towels we have the decathlon microfibre. We also have zip lock air bags so room isn't a problem. My daughter clothes weigh 2.9kg all in apart from swimming so think we should be ok for weight. I hope 🙏

You would have to fill a bag of that size with very heavy stuff to get over 10kg.

Rainbowsandrainclouds1 · 23/07/2023 20:32

If the route is busy i.e to spanish long weekend destinations you may have to put it in the hold.

Ive been on over 20 flights this year, each one with hold baggage and only twice have i had to wait at the belt longer than 20 mins. Both times were in US aiports.

Is it worth the hassle of working out packing tetris to save less than an hour on a 2 week holiday?

I agree. Trying to cram two weeks worth of stuff into a Kanken. I'd rather wait for my bags and have what I want for my holiday.

cherryassam · 23/07/2023 20:34

Which airport are you flying out from? I only ask as there are a few small local airports in the UK which don’t have a Boots or similar post security - as I found out recently at Belfast City!
