Cabin and hand luggage only

Hi all,

We have a holiday booked to Greece in 2 weeks for myself, husband and DD(7) almost 8. Holiday is 14 days.

My husband has long term chronic illness that can cause issues with long travel, but we are desperate for a holiday abroad, so have gone for it and tried to make it as smooth and easy as possible - I have booked it all myself airport parking, only 40 mins to local, small airport. Flight and then taxi for 25 mins to our self catering accommodation.

My question is, just throw at me what you take abroad that I will struggle with, regards hand luggage only (liquid limit 100ml bottles).

I have thought of the following
Soap (bar)
Shampoo and conditioner (bars)
Sun cream (sprays decanted into 100ml bottles)
Medicines we will consider obviously.

Am I missing anything?

I know perfume and make up but they don't bother me that much.

We all have 10kg cabin bag and 10kg hand luggage and fly with Ryanair. So 60KG in total.

Are they picky with bum bags and the shoulder cushions which we will wear if we need to add more "luggage (undies etc)" inside them.

Thanks if you read to here and have any suggestions on what to consider. ✌️

You are self-catering... just buy your soap, sun cream ect with your food shop. It saves all the hassle.

Also, please double check your baggage allowance and size.

I usually get away with a 30l backpack for 1 week in summer. (packing cubes are genius!) It fits under the seat - so no need to pay for luggage.

If you have rucksacks for your cabin luggage they are unlikely to put them in the hold. I've been in queues where the staff go along and select cabin bags to go in the hold on full flights, and they've only picked hard cases.

Good to know. We have soft shell cabin bags (large rucksacks basically).

I have flown a lot this year and baggage has been really quick each time. Also they have taken people’s bags off them on every flight - sometimes even larger rucksacks. Seriously, just put it in the hold. You might save 10 mins?!

Make sure they are the right size for your airline.

We travel on holidays regularly with just hand-luggage and weight is never an issue, it’s very doable for a sun holiday. Just keep shoes to a minimum - wear a pair, then pack a pair of pool shoes and a pair of flat sandals. For 14 days, pack enough clothes for a week with the aim of doing a wash mid-way through. You won’t need a different outfit for each day of the holiday.

Either buy toiletries after security or when you arrive at your destination. Don’t decant sunscreen - I’d be worried it would loose its potency if you decant it. If you have favourite toiletries, face creams, etc. see if you can get samples or travel sizes. You will have room for a few books, cards, etc.

😂
You have loads of luggage. You can take all liquids the want in the hold luggage.

we usually take 10kg hand luggage and one checked in bag for 3 and actually now it’ll just be me be husband we will just take hand luggage on a warm holiday with washing facilities

She knows that but she hasn't got any hold luggage. The issue is that she is going for two weeks and has to keep her cabin bag at under 40cmx20cmx25cm.

I have flown with Ryanair many times, so here's my tips.

  1. Liquids include makeup so I decant foundation or CC cream into tiny pots. Take a travel size mascara and deodorant. I use perfume atomizers and decant perfume into that. Buy shampoo/sun tan cream/ shower gel there. If you buy a bottle of perfume duty free, do it on way back or you'll have the liquid issue. I didn't find duty free prices very good, so didn't buy anything.
  2. Medicines don't count as 100ml as long as a doctors certificate.
  3. Use compressed packing cubes for your stuff. You only need shorts/ tops/ swimwear/ lightweight stuff , so 10kg should do and wash when there.
  4. Last time I went, they get very sniffy about shoulder/ crossbody bags on your person, so this had to go in your under seat bag. They are clamping down on everyone's hack about buying stuff post security, and stuffing it with your belongings and are making people put it in their bags.
  5. If you think you are going to need more, I'd book one 23kg bag in hold and everyone can use it. However queues at Ryanair checked in baggage can be absolutely horrendous. A couple of people I know nearly missed their flights due to queues, which were about 1.5/ 2hrs at busy times. They are so disorganised in some airports, so get there super early, like at least 3 hours ( preferably more) for the desks opening, if you do want to add checked in luggage. Even Edinburgh in March was awful. Every other airline was fine, except Ryanair queue 🙄.
  6. Really really check your bags dimensions and measurements including wheels if you have them on your luggage. I've seen people being fine on way out and then someone deciding they needed to pay on way back.

I fly Ryanair all the time. Never ever had an issue with them and their timings and departure airport suit me to a T. I travel around Europe a bit and have never checked a bag in, only the overhead cabin bag + handbag/small backpack. That has done me for up to two weeks. Wash out stuff in between, it dries in an hour or two in hot weather. We (well I...) often end up wearing the same clothes over and over and come back with unworn stuff all the time. So now I work out what I wear the most and just bring that.

As for liquids, as a pp said, I decant fave moisturiser/foundation into the little screwtop pots, same for toothpaste. All other make up is powder based. I never bother with shower cream or shampoo etc. That can either be bought there or is supplied by hotel. I buy sunscreen at destination.

I was a huge overpacker at one time. Always worried I would not have enough changes etc. But really no one cares or looks at you and thinks, hmmm I saw Katy in that dress a couple of days ago lol. A rinse and a hanger are all you need.

Hope you have a fabulous time OP, and remember the vitals are medications, passport, travel docs and a debit/credit card.

Ylvamoon · 24/07/2023 15:23

@Keykaty - you are lucky indeed.

Last time I used them, they changed flight times and only told me via email/ app on the morning of my departure. This was a afternoon flight moved to evening.

One of their flights left 20 minutes early... several people missed that flight. (Due to tiny airport, it literally takes 5 minutes from dropo off zone to departure gate...)
And before that time, it was when pilots went on strike... we ended up at a different airport, and an additional 1 hour bus ride.

I just can't trust them at all and only use them if all else fails and I know I don't have many time constraints.

Lilacshade · 24/07/2023 15:40

For the sake of an extra hour I don't see the point in having to travel with hand luggage only, especially with children. I'm firmly of the "fill the luggage allowance" group.

If it's remotely touristy you can buy beach towels there.
