Will this get through security?

Travelling to Spain with just hand luggage and need to take the essential toiletries. Have stuffed everything into a 20cm by 20cm sandwich bag. Is this going to meet the requirements for going through security? Thanks

Should say each individual item is under 100ml

Which airport?

userxx · 19/07/2023 13:39

I think you'll be fine with that.

123bumblebee123 · 19/07/2023 13:40

Gatwick

Should be ok providing they don't have to open and swab anything and struggle to close it again.

With it being so tightly packed I'd take a few spare bags with you, in case this one splits while you're away.

123bumblebee123 · 19/07/2023 13:42

Good idea on the extra bags

How often do they open and swab things?

Why don't you put in to 2 bags?

Temporaryname158 · 19/07/2023 13:43

Do you have over a litre in total? As that is the maximum. So you can’t have more than 10 items. They may ask you to use their bag in which case be prepared to lose some bits

why not just buy some when through security to reduce the risk of that?

jotunn · 19/07/2023 13:43

We had that and had to split it up into 3 bags

DustyLee123 · 19/07/2023 13:44

I was told that I can only have what fits in one bag when I tried the one litre thing

cherryassam · 19/07/2023 13:46

They might make you use the bags they supply and repack.

Id be tempted to drop some of the easily buyable things to make it simpler and less stressful - Boots post security sells 55p travel toothpaste, for example.

cherryassam · 19/07/2023 13:48

At Gatwick they do it by bag - one bag per passenger only.

I’m not sure if it would even be possible to fit more than 1l in the required bag size - I don’t understand how volume works very well though!

I don't thing the litre maximum is a thing? Just says that must fit in the bag and no one item can be more than 100ml?

One person one bag - you're not allowed to split into 2 bags are you?

Looks exactly like the bag sandwich bag I took through security 2 weeks ago. It was fine. Throw it in the scanner tray and keep moving. I can't see anything which would cause a problem.

Enjoy your holiday!

FWIW the HMG UK restrictions in part are:

...If you do take liquids in your hand luggage:

  • containers must hold no more than 100ml
  • containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
  • contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed
  • the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top
  • you’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person...

The airport can choose to be more restrictive than above, they are not supposed to be less restrictive, for example they shouldn't allow two bags..

I've had mine swabbed the last two times I've flown this year, but it's not happened before those times.

LadyMaud · 19/07/2023 13:57

Manchester would make you separate it

(this may or may not have happened to me) 😬

cherryassam · 19/07/2023 14:00

@LadyMaud Manchester is the reason I asked which airport. They are the most picky airport for liquids I’ve ever flown from.

Loverofoxbowlakes · 19/07/2023 14:01

You've not included any make-up in that little haul - lipsticks, liquid blush/eyeliner/mascara all count. Ask me how I know...

TheSeaDoesntKnowMyName · 19/07/2023 14:04

i have taken through more than one bag at Gatwick though, are you travelling with family, you could share it out

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2023 14:05

It looks alright to me. As long as the size is right and it closes.

If they pul you up on it, take out 1 or 2 of the cheapest/most easily replaceable items and bin them. Then the rest will be fine.

123bumblebee123 · 19/07/2023 14:11

Just me flying. Think I will leave the suncream and buy at the airport after security. Thanks all.

probably cheaper at the resort than the airport
i would leave behind shampoo and get that abroad too

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2023 14:20

I disagree about the suncream. It always seems extortionate in Europe, whereas in the airport, you'll be able to get a bottle of Boots own brand for a fiver.

If you've got suncream in that bag, you won't have enough anyway, unless you're only going for 2/3 days or planning on staying covered up in the shade.

ThanksFun · 19/07/2023 14:25

I was refused a similar bag once because it wasn’t completely transparent
