What do you consider expensive for a hotel?

I'm not talking about all inclusive or jungle lodges that include activities etc.

Just thinking, beach holiday. Hotel including breakfast. What do you consider expensive?

I know it will depend on salary, but for us we aim to spend not much more than £100 per night. We would consider £200 a night a splurge.

Interestingly, this hasn't changed since our earnings increased over the years from a household income of 100k to 400k.

I prefer not to pay over £350 per night for bed and breakfast. My thinking is three nights is about £1000. My DH normal chooses hotels more expensive hotels and I’m the more sensible one.
We have paid quite a bit more for hotel rooms and would put these in the expensive category.
I don’t really work a mini break out or holiday on a per night basis but more is the approximate overall cost good value and worth it for us.
So if we really need a break and time together then three nights in a nice area would be worth £1500 to us with some nice dinners and days out.

Georgiepud · 14/07/2023 15:58

Probably in the region of £300 a night with breakfast. I always think if I'm going away I want a superior type room with a view, not one overlooking the dustbins.

Ragwort · 14/07/2023 16:00

I think if I had a household income of £400k I would happily treat myself to something a little more luxurious... and I certainly wouldn't be posting on Mumsnet asking for opinions Shock.

This. If I was taking home £15.5k A MONTH I’m not sure I would be booking £100 hotel rooms. I’d be looking for something far more fancy!

cherryassam · 14/07/2023 16:36

For me it’s all relative so is difficult to say. It depends on how pricey an area is.

chipsandpeas · 14/07/2023 16:39

depends where i am going

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/07/2023 16:41

I’d definitely consider £200/night a splurge and aim for about £100 if I can find somewhere decent (I never stay in dumps!) but my income is 10% of yours!

SwedishEdith · 14/07/2023 16:52

Why are you being so tight on £400k pa?

MissAmbrosia · 14/07/2023 20:41

Hmm. I think prices have gone up a lot this year. To me 100 a night is the Premier Inn - all well and good and fine for a couple of nights. For a holiday - my budget this year is definitely 250 - 300 + a night for nice places. I don't do any AI or package trips though. I normally want a decent room and balcony for that. We don't go mad as we generally don't spend much time in the room, so it's a waste. I went for years self catering with a 200 - 250 a night budget for self catering, including Eurocamp.

PissOffJeffrey · 14/07/2023 20:47

I go for value. For example, we love a hotel in Devon. A double room "inland facing" ie car park view goes for roughly £160 per night B&B. A superior double on the other side of the building with a sea view to die for costs around £280 per night B&B.

I think the £160 car park view is too expensive & the £280 Seaview is worth the money. At the same hotel 😂.

Squiggo · 14/07/2023 20:48

The Savoy is too expensive apparently.

ManchesterLu · 14/07/2023 20:53

God this thread is depressing me. I can't even afford a night in a Travel Lodge at the moment. (And that's my answer - anything more than about £50 a night I find expensive).

DuesToTheDirt · 14/07/2023 20:55

If you're talking about jungle lodges and/or AI, then you're looking looking in the UK. So it really, really depends on prices where you're going. Otherwise it's impossible to say.

We go on holiday to see and do things, not to hang around the hotel, so I tend to pay as little as possible to get something clean and comfortable, preferably with some character. But then we don't have an income of 400k.

User3253625 · 14/07/2023 20:56

Our average spend has definitely crept up over the years with earnings. In my early 20s it was £80-100 a night. So £150 would have been very expensive.

We have a household income of 250-300K and our typical travel budget is £300-500 per night. £1000 is considered a splurge, for very special occasions or all-inclusive resorts.

gogomoto · 14/07/2023 21:00

Anything over £200 is expensive so needs to be justified (eg london, New York, extra facilities) we are looking at £1100 each for our 12 day holiday

Gough20 · 14/07/2023 21:10

Weird. Pay what you want, and can afford.

Hellokittymania · 14/07/2023 21:13

I live in central Greece, and just went to a hotel about 10 minutes away, right in front of the beach, which also has a swimming pool and spa and paid €104 per night, including breakfast. The pool allowed inflatable‘s, which I was really happy about, I wish I had known before hand though. I am visually impaired, and there was a karate competition going on so the hotel was full of children… Not so easy for me, but I didn’t joy at least a small amount of time in the swimming pool, and got to sit in my bikini by the pool and enjoy lunch. Some thing I don’t get to do very often.

apart from somewhere with a swimming pool though, it really depends where I am. Some places are more expenses, sorry I’m using dictation more expensive than others in general, in Singapore for example there are some hostels with private rooms that cost 60 Singapore dollars per night, and there are some hotels like value or Hotel 81 that don’t cost as much, but really it depends. If I am in Singapore, usually I am not in my room so much, so I don’t mind. It is only if I really do want to go somewhere with a swimming pool and a nice breakfast Buffay or some thing else that I will spend a bit more. But again, because of my visual impairment I don’t do things like go swimming very often, just because I am on my own, leisure centers can discriminate, so can gyms and I find experiences in a hotel can be much more relaxing and I can use the pool, gym, and enjoy myself without having to fight with discrimination about why am there on my own.

I stayed at a very nice hotel in Santosa in Singapore which had a very nice swimming pool with a waterslide, and again, it was Santosa so had the beach, activities around, and it was about 300 Singapore dollars per night, but again for me that’s a big treat

Agree. ☹️
I’d say around 100 but certainly have no where near 400K or even 100K.

Vanillalime · 14/07/2023 21:59

I try to stick to an average of £100pn.

I used to book more luxurious hotels but after a while realised I was paying extra for parking/breakfast/Wi-Fi & and the extra costs added on a good chunk.

I also realised that I really only use hotels as a place to sleep, so I am looking for a comfy bed & good shower. Free parking, free breakfast & free Wi-Fi is a bonus which tends to be included somewhere cheaper like a Best Western, Hampton by Hilton, Embassy Suites, Doubletree etc so these have become my preferred types of hotel.

SiobhanSharpe · 23/01/2024 16:02

If i had that kind of income I certainly wouldn't baulk at spending £500 plus a night on a really nice hotel, with spa, pools, great food and service. possibly more for special occasions.
I'd be looking at Shangri-Las, Mandarin Orientals, Raffles, The Peninsula and so on.
Monica Galetti and Fred Sirieux stayed in a fabulous looking place in Italy (Dolomites?) it was £4,000 per week / £2,000 per person so under £600 a day.

£100 a night?!

more like 200-350

DGPP · 23/01/2024 16:05

We pay £500 for five star.. a total splurge. I think £200 a night is pretty standard nowadays unless we’re staying in the Premier Inn

SiobhanSharpe · 23/01/2024 16:11

Hampton by Hilton hotels are ok, but ones I've stayed in (in the U.S.) tended to be in less than great locations, on the edge of town, nothing but parking lots around, and the 'free breakfast' was an indifferent cup of coffee and a muffin.

Dartmoorcheffy · 23/01/2024 16:12

When you earn 400k you can afford what you like. Yet another stealth boast on here today. Most of us earn 40k or less

lovemelongtime · 23/01/2024 16:12

What a depressing, showy kind of thread. £100 is usually about what we'd pay, but it's all relative. Surely on 400k income you don't need to hunt around like we do, why are you asking?
