How much is reasonable for an All Inclusive Holiday?

mclcat · 13/07/2023 15:05

Never been abroad with the kids so we're looking to book a 7 night holiday for 2 adults, 2 kids, probably Easter holidays or just before. Not too fussed on a specific location but would like somewhere with good activities for the kids with nice pools, maybe a few water slides or a splash park.

How much is a reasonable/average amount to pay for a holiday like this? Seeing lots of quotes for £2k+ but this just seems like a crazy amount but really have nothing to compare it to.
Is taking the kids out of school for a week a better idea? (They are primary school age and have good attendance and grades)

@mclcat where are you looking? £2k for all of you in the canaries at that time of year would be a bargain, in most of the rest of Europe it’s still cheap but the weather is unlikely to be good, water will be cold so not really sunbathing/water park appropriate hence the price.

FWIW we just booked next summer at £2.5k pp for 10 nights

We're going to Tenerife 4* hotel 3 days before Scottish kids break up for October half term & its 2.5 kids for 2a & 2c one if which is 1 yo and hit a free child place for the otter

Does the otter have its own passport? 🦦🤣 I’m now going to spend the day imagining an otter having the time of its life at a water park! 🙃

In many places a UK holiday cottage will cost 2k in the summer

Irrelevant. Completely different business models, supply and demand, cost of living etc.

But I think the OP is talking about £2k+ for the whole holiday, not pp.

Grin at the thought of the otter at the waterpark.

We paid £4k for a weeks all inclusive in Ibiza a few weeks ago, dc aged 11 and 20 and dh and I. It was a 4 star resort. To be honest I wouldn’t go all inclusive again, we may have just been unlucky but we got so fed up with the food and eating in the same places. We ended up spending a lot on eating elsewhere just for the change of food and scenery. If we went abroad I’d spend more on a really nice b and b or self catering place and just take lots of money to eat out at all the local restaurants all the time. But I guess it totally depends on your family and what you like. I took my son out of school for the week because otherwise we were looking at paying an extra £2k ish which seemed insane.

Hi OP. Have not read full thread but think you would be nuts to shell out ££££ for a short family holiday given COL, Global Warming, high temperatures predicted in Europe. Expect next year temps will be higher.

Just imagine paying ££££ and having to sit indoors in air con with bad TV??

I personally, would look at staycations. at good location.

Do good research of areas with things that interest you as a family and are not too expensive to travel to (check offers) e.g. history, type of sport, art/crafts etc. something that your family will engage and learn from.

Whatever you, I would advise, do not go into debt for a holiday just because others you know are 'going away'. Don't go on a holiday you have to
pay for after you come back. You can't afford it.
Don't get sucked into keeping up with the Jones.
Wishing you and your family a happy summer.

How ridiculous. I live in a temperatures 45+ in summer and we don't stay indoors in ac with bad tv. Have you ever been on a holiday apart from a camp site in uk? Pools in the shade cool you down. feel sorry for you and your kids.

Maybe OP doesn't want 'to learn' whilst she is on holiday. Maybe she just wants to sit on her arse for a week and not have to do anything? Not having to spend time wondering around resorts and researching where to eat every day, or spending 2 hours of your holiday at a supermarket, can actually be rather nice. Eating at buffets are quick. Spending the day at the pool and walking no more than 6 foot for a drink is nice.

Maybe she wants searing heat.

Also, a staycation means staying at home and exploring the local area. If you live in one part of the UK, and you stay in another part for a week to 'engage' then you are on holiday.

As others have said Easter is too early for a fun around the pool holiday with kids. Too early unless the Canaries which limits your options for cheap deals. You wouldn't enjoy it and would probably feel you had wasted your money. Sometimes a two week holiday or 10/11 days doesn't cost much more and gives more time to unwind after all the prep of getting there. I would wait until the May school holiday break and look at adding the week after so the kids still only have a week off ...or sometimes it's cheaper to fly out a few days before .Temperstures would be far more suitable for the kind of holiday you want. Easter will be expensive and not really warm enough.

Not if you go out of Europe, there’s plenty of places on the planet that are hot during Easter

SpainToday · 14/07/2023 09:19

In my experience, the Canaries are warm-ish around Easter, but definitely not summer holiday weather

rookiemere · 14/07/2023 09:20

You could try looking at HB rather than AI. For our last couple of holidays HB cost very little extra over B&B whereas changing to AI was 25-50 euros more per person per day. Unless your DCs drink a lot of soft drinks and/or you are big drinkers which is unlikely with a young family, then it doesn't seem worthwhile to me.

shiningstar2 · 14/07/2023 09:20

If you definitely only want a week I would consider flying out a few days before half term to lessen the flight prices or go in June ..pretty safe for good weather and just accept that the kids get a week off school.

CamCola · 14/07/2023 09:36

I’d say 3.5k for a week AL for a Family of 4.

CavierBreak · 14/07/2023 09:48

Yes, canaries at Easter this year were a mixed bag weather wise and definitely jumper in the evening type affair.

I think we managed around 3K for a self catering place and hired a car. You could cut back by not hiring a car and just getting a taxi to and from the resort.

fireflyloo · 14/07/2023 10:02

I was in the canaries at Easter and it was exceptionally warm. We had 3 days from Easter Sunday at above 30 degrees. Then it cooled to 27/28. Didn't need a cardigan at all. Mogan area.

Littlessweepy · 14/07/2023 10:20

I’m surprised you think 2k is a crazy price for what you have described. That’s about 70 quid per day per person for all food and drinks, flights, accommodation and all the facilities you’ve listed. I paid £9k for 4 (2 adults 2 kids) for 10 days AI 5 star in Spain. 5 years ago might have got the same holiday for £5k.

gogomoto · 14/07/2023 11:04

Op hasn't been back, I think she has got the message that £2k is cheap these days. I'm looking at £800 per person in term time (no kids) at a standard 4*

shiningstar2 · 14/07/2023 11:20

I know that @BluNomad but I was thinking of the op's budget. The longer flights in my experience would swallow up a large part of the budget, even if she could extend it a little. It's lovely to do long haul, even for a week, especially if it isn't the only holiday you are having that year, but with ,2 young kids and, perhaps the only abroad holiday they'll get for quite a good while, I think that, on the whole Europe and the Canaries is going to be the cheapest option. 😄

inloveonholiday · 14/07/2023 11:39

About £2.5k per adult mid range. More for a better choice

Wanttoshavemyhairoff · 14/07/2023 11:41

2k per person I presume?!!

we paid 6k this year for two adults & 2 kids for two weeks in Majorca

user73 · 14/07/2023 14:26

We are currently on an all inclusive break to Egypt. 2 adults and then dc are 18 and 16 so both at adult prices anyway. It was £5500 for a week.

bellsbuss · 14/07/2023 14:43

I've bern pricing up the canaries for Easter next year, 2 adults and 2 children AI was ranging from £2800 for somewhere not nice to £4500 half decent and £6000 and over for somewhere nice.
