How much is reasonable for an All Inclusive Holiday?

Never been abroad with the kids so we're looking to book a 7 night holiday for 2 adults, 2 kids, probably Easter holidays or just before. Not too fussed on a specific location but would like somewhere with good activities for the kids with nice pools, maybe a few water slides or a splash park.

How much is a reasonable/average amount to pay for a holiday like this? Seeing lots of quotes for £2k+ but this just seems like a crazy amount but really have nothing to compare it to.
Is taking the kids out of school for a week a better idea? (They are primary school age and have good attendance and grades)

For a decent hotel in school holidays you're probably looking at 3k for 4 people or possibly more

Whiterose23 · 13/07/2023 20:53

We’re paying £3200 for a week in Gran Canaria next Easter. This is for 2a2c, we did get a free child place flying from Birmingham. The same holiday flying from Gatwick was £4200

doingthehokeykokey · 13/07/2023 20:59

18k for 1 week. Was very naice though. Champers if you wanted, all babysitting included. Gourmet food.

You can pay anything. 2k sounds like a good deal. Too cheap and you'll regret it.

SparkyBlue · 13/07/2023 21:07

We paid approx 7k for 2 adults 3 children going this month for mainland Spain. The weather will definitely be an issue for the month you wish to go. At the cheaper end you might end up in a resort with miserable weather you definitely need the canaries at that time of year

Blaggingit123 · 13/07/2023 21:33

I’m shocked you think this is expensive, I’ve looked during school holidays but it’s £6k for 4 for anywhere I’d want to go (I’m not paying £4k to eat a buffet dinner). I honestly would struggle to spend less than £2k all inclusive on a UK holiday - would probably spend nearly that much in total even if camping…

AutieNOT0tie · 13/07/2023 21:51

Is that 2k for all of you or pp? We went to Portugal for a week self catering for £300 pp in April. I'd say at least £500 pp if out of school holiday's probably 800+ in holidays. Fines are £120 per child to take them out. U could trying going a few days before the hols as less likely to be charged if under 5 days

Hi OP. Have not read full thread but think you would be nuts to shell out ££££ for a short family holiday given COL, Global Warming, high temperatures predicted in Europe. Expect next year temps will be higher.

Just imagine paying ££££ and having to sit indoors in air con with bad TV??

I personally, would look at staycations. at good location.

Do good research of areas with things that interest you as a family and are not too expensive to travel to (check offers) e.g. history, type of sport, art/crafts etc. something that your family will engage and learn from.

Whatever you, I would advise, do not go into debt for a holiday just because others you know are 'going away'. Don't go on a holiday you have to
pay for after you come back. You can't afford it.
Don't get sucked into keeping up with the Jones.
Wishing you and your family a happy summer.

The OP didn’t ask about any of that.

All inclusive holidays in the school holidays do cost a huge amount of money. I'm another one surprised that it's 'only' £2k.

I also don't want to pay a huge amount to have to get up and down to a buffet for meals nor do I want to pay an even hugher amount for the type of AI where they serve you at a nice outdoor table so we generally self cater or do B&B in an apartment that is in walking distance from restaurants, supermarket and also beach etc.

We then eat out once a day and also stock up with drinks, snacks and easy food from the supermarket. We might eat out while out and about at lunchtime and have ham, cheese, olives, crisps etc with drinks on the terrace in the evening. Or a BBQ

Or we'll have a big, late breakfast, ice creams or snacks while out in the daytime and then go out for dinner.

Unless you've managed to drop on a spectacular special offer, I'd be concerned that the food in a hotel that's £2k for a family at Easter wouldn't be very nice. But as you've paid a relatively low price for what it is, you could always eat out a few times.

Yuja · 14/07/2023 05:35

We paid 4k for 2 adults and 2 children in May half term. That was a lot cheaper than the summer and we flew back a bit later as the kids had an inset. 2k sounds really cheap.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 14/07/2023 06:14

If typically pay more than that for self catering so it sounds very low if it includes food too.

Shadowboy · 14/07/2023 06:21

£2k per person is about right for the summer holidays. I wouldn’t want to go over Easter as the weather won’t be as good at this time. It can be quite wet and the pools won’t have warmed up. You won’t get the value for money. In fact in some places the tourism season hasn’t really started so some places like water parks will be closed. Dubai will be warm then as an option that might just be within £2k for all of you.

places warmer like the Maldives etc are likely to be about £5k for 4 for a basic package. Moving to £6-7k.
we went in 2013 and it was £4k for just the two of us in August.

Aposterhasnoname · 14/07/2023 06:53

If you’re considering taking them out of school then I’d wait till later in the year when there’s more chance of warm weather. 2k for four people is tight though.

Chickenpastabowl · 14/07/2023 07:00

We paid £2k for two adults and 2 children (4☆ majorca) at Easter. We travelled on the inset day before holidays started and saved £800 by doing so (dc are secondary school so try to avoid taking them out). Look at jet2.com and fiddle around with dates and times (we also saved by going out on the early flight but coming back on a night flight).

Aubree17 · 14/07/2023 07:21

I'd expect to pay 1200-1500 each for somewhere decent,

RhubarbFairy · 14/07/2023 07:30

CeeceeBloomingdale · 14/07/2023 06:14

Same. We've never done an AI holiday, as we love a Eurocamp or a city break. But we're in France at the end of the summer holidays for 6 nights at a Eurocamp we visit annually, and we won't see any change from £2k.
Accommodation/ferry was around £1k and then we've got food/spending money/petrol to consider.

We're 2 adults/2 children.

2k seems cheap, especially if it includes flights, which are notoriously expensive in school holidays. We went away in May half term for 4 nights, and for most places, I couldn't find flights for less than £1k for the 4 of us, and certainly not a package for anywhere near £2k, anywhere decent that is. We did eventually go to Italy as flights were £600 return for the 4 of us. Managed to get some cheap accommodation at a Eurocamp site (£200 for 4 nights), but we still spent around £500 on food. It mounts up quickly!

Re weather, in May, Italy was scorching (30 degrees), and my DC were in the outside pools all day.

Yellowdays · 14/07/2023 07:42

We went a few years ago to Crete in the October half term and it was very warm, and not expensive. Can't remember the exact price though. Obviously some people like to spend huge sums, such as a few quoted on here, but you don't have to for a decent holiday.

NashvilleQueen · 14/07/2023 08:11

Could you clarify OP if you mean £2k pp or as a total?

Rocknrollstar · 14/07/2023 08:14

Holidays have really gone up in price, post Covid. Don’t forget all inclusive means you won’t be paying out for ice creams and soft drinks, never mind entertainment.

DontYouThreatenMeWithADeadFish · 14/07/2023 08:14

Just be very wary as to what is included as many holidays are advertised as 'all inclusive' but are anything but.

BluNomad · 14/07/2023 08:16

We have 1 dc, min we pay for 3 is 3k, max is 12k but it depends where you go & how nice the resort is

Silkierabbit · 14/07/2023 08:19

It seems low to me but be aware many waterparks don't open until May, pools are generally open but maybe unheated and Easter is borderline, its OK if you swim but less so for standing in a pool. The first holiday for school age is a huge shock price wise.

RoyKentFanclub · 14/07/2023 08:21

£2k for all four of you is unrealistic (or will be very risky)

OfMark87 · 14/07/2023 08:21

We're going to Tenerife 4* hotel 3 days before Scottish kids break up for October half term & its 2.5 kids for 2a & 2c one if which is 1 yo and hit a free child place for the otter

Mamadothehump · 14/07/2023 08:23

You won't get a week AI for a family of 4 in the Easter hols for 2k. At least double I'd say.

mastertomsmum · 14/07/2023 08:26

In many places a UK holiday cottage will cost 2k in the summer
