Solo Holiday for Those Afraid of the Heat

Would love to go abroad somewhere, but I'm on a budget for about £1k all in for 7 or 10 days, but I can't stand the heat. I don't think I can last out till winter when most places in the world will be in winter temps.

Is there anywhere I can go flying either from the Midlands/London for a package deal Bed and Breakfast only (at a stretch SC) or just DIY for a certain hotel and flight? I'm keen to explore local history/landscape/beauty spots etc. not bothered about nice resort/shopping. (Love markets, though). Also, very keen for going to a thermal springs.

I'm not familiar with package hols. as I'm used to travelling to Airbnb across the country, so I am having trouble navigating the holiday sites.

Why not explore beautiful Scottish islands?

lljkk · 04/07/2023 21:31

OvernightFerry from Harwich to Hook of Holland, rail pass, airbnb, exploring Dutch towns?

cherryassam · 04/07/2023 21:33

Would you rather be based in one place for a week or move between places?

Nachtvlinder · 04/07/2023 21:34

@Unexpectedlysinglemum Went to The Highlands in winter some years ago and stayed in an empty newly built hostel in Lochearnhead. Very peaceful. Can't go now as it'll be full of mozzies/midges.

@cherryassam I'm used to travelling to different places after a few days here and there, so I'm open to a package deal by the sea/mountains preferably. I thought it'll make a change to not travel so often. I can use local buses/trains for sights. (I won't be driving).

@lljkk I fancy hills/mountains/sea areas, sorry.

If you’d rather be in one place:

Karlovy Vary, Czechia (fly to Prague then bus or train)

Bad Ems, Germany (fly to Frankfurt or Düsseldorf then train)

Hévíz, Hungary (fly to Budapest then train)

Budapest (but you might not want a city break)

Vichy, France (fly to Lyon then train, or Eurostar then train)

Ive focussed on the thermal spa part of your wish list!

Cross channel ferry as foot passenger Portsmouth to Bilbao, northern Spain. Plenty of mountains & sea there. £210 for crossing. https://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/booking/choose-crossing/outbound

Just seen your update, will put my thinking hat on!

lljkk · 04/07/2023 21:53

I had a really cold wet visit to Ireland one summer, lol. They have mountains & sea, too.

cherryassam · 04/07/2023 21:59

Tui do Lakes and Mountains package holidays, which might be worth a look

Faircastle · 04/07/2023 22:11

I have been trying to avoid the heat for several summers now, with varying success...

Paris: heatwave, it was over 30°C
Belgium: heatwave, again over 30°C
Belfast: low 20s, ideal temperatures, enjoyable holiday
North Wales: high 20s, a bit too warm but we were staying in a forest which helped

Heading for the Lake District this summer🤞

At this rate I'm going to end up holidaying in the Arctic circle.

Faircastle · 04/07/2023 22:15

I'm also heading to Switzerland for a long weekend, but I'm not sure you'd get 7-10 days for £1K.

cherryassam · 04/07/2023 22:15

You could also look at:

Corsica, beautiful sea and lovely mountains

Slovenia - a tiny amount of coastline but it is beautiful! But also lots of lakes and great mountains

Midlander01 · 05/07/2023 07:07

Ireland
Orkney or Shetland

Neverinamonthofsundays · 05/07/2023 07:20

Come to Ireland. YOu will be hardpressed to find heat amongst all the rain.

Gateappreciation · 05/07/2023 07:23

Go north, Scandinavia, or northern Europe - northern France, Holland etc. Weather is more UK-like.

Maybe a fjord cruise?

BlueKaftan · 05/07/2023 07:27

Central Europe tends to be hot in the summer. Look at Norway or Wales? We’re in the Netherlands at the moment and it’s freezing.

Sarale · 05/07/2023 07:35

Azores sounds like it fits! It's a mild tropical climate about 22°c all year round, and completely stunning - lots of lakes, volcanic beaches and hills. The centre is small and pretty with good restaurants. For a thermal spa day you really can't beat Poca de Dona Beija, the setting is unreal. Ryanair fly there (Ponta Delgada) but only from Stansted now!

FarTooHotForMe · 05/07/2023 18:07

How about Norway or Iceland?

Crispynoodle · 05/07/2023 18:45

Ireland has everything

lljkk · 05/07/2023 21:08

Don't think OP can do Iceland, Norway or Norway P&O cruise for < £1k for 7-10 days.

Went to Ireland in 2010 in Aug. thinking it would be lovely weather, but didn't expect it to rain/cold for most of the time. Had to buy cagoules for the family and jumpers!
