CrocodileOenophile · 01/07/2023 17:37

I have an amazing opportunity (family life permitting for the firt time in ages) to visit Dublin I left the hotel bookings a bit late, but like, are there any budget alternatives, like Premiere Inn or Trabvelodge? Im in my late 30s and dontfancy staying in a hostel, but the prices of what I saw were quite prohibitive. Is air bnb the only other option?
Thanks,
joanna

Are you staying in the Townsend Street Travelodge Plus? I can give you tips for that area if you are. It is not clear which one you are using.

Jurys Inn Christchurch was good last year - easy to access places with a small walk, good local food, and would happily go back!

I agree. I find this Jury's Inn good, I've booked people in there before.

Hotel prices in Dublin generally are eye-watering tho!

I think it's called Travelodge Dublin City Centre?

M&S Grafton St cafe has a nice roof terrace overlooking Grafton St by the way. If the weather is OK it isn't a bad spot for a pastry/sandwich and a coffee.

OK, it all depends on how much time you have. I'd advise avoiding Temple Bar, but if you want to go for the experience of diddly eye music and crowds just walk around for an hour. Mad expensive there.

The natives go to Camden Street, South William Street, Dawson Street, and Sth Anne Street areas. So much there, look on the map.

Where you are staying is right beside Trinity College Campus. Go out to Pearse Street for cheaper eats and drinks - it's a studenty place, so while still expensive by other standards it is cheap for the natives! If you have time walk down to Grand Canal Square, there is a Wetherspoons there overlooking the water, and a great buzz about the place, it is off Pearse Street, top end.

On the other side of the river is the Financial District, but there is a great spot there called The Harbourmaster Bar, and Urban Brewing. It is near to o2 Arena so avoid on concert nights!

Take the DART rapid rail from Tara Street station to DunLaoghaire and walk along the pier, a famous and much loved pastime for native Dubs. Also, you can take bus no C1, or C2 from Pearse Street to charming Sandymount. It only takes ten minutes and you are by the sea, there is a great walk all along. The village has numerous pubs, eateries, and quirky shops. Handy for getting away from the city in a jiffy!

Ask away if you want/need more info.

I'm struggling to think of many places on Pearse St?

There's Caffe di Napoli (Westmorland Row), on the way to Pearse St, lovely Italian, especially pizza. Not sure otherwise. Some sandwich places I guess?

Grand Canal Dock - il Valentino is lovely for coffee & pastries.

Good idea to visit Dun Laoghaire / Sandymount

Keykat · 06/07/2023 20:33

Was thinking O'Neills, The Lombard pub, Moss Lane, and of course the Bread 41 bakery and eats.

Oh yes! To all of these. 😀 I stand corrected!

TakingTheLowRoad · 06/07/2023 20:41

Cross the river and wander down Capel Street - loads of affordable places to eat.

IrritableVowel · 06/07/2023 22:23

I really fancy an evening in town now!

CrocodileOenophile · 07/07/2023 08:24

These are all amazing, so while we are at it, coul you beautiful peoplerecommend things to do?
I have a full day on one of the days and half a day on the next (a friend planned a matinee theatre and something else for the other evening).
I dont mind wandering aimlessly, but there are probably things to see. Any good half-day tours/places that are not to odifficult to reach on a train/bus?

@Keykat made good suggestions re trips to Dun Laoghaire & Sandymount.

City centre, it depends what you are interested in but I'd recommend: the Natural History Museum (also known as the Dead Zoo!), the National Library (Seamus Heaney exhibition) (both near each other, Merrion Street & Kildare Street), Collins Barracks (easy to access via Luas), MoLI (Museum of Literature Ireland), Stephen's Green, or a bit further up, the actual Dublin Zoo, in the Phoenix Park.

Oh and National Gallery (Clare Street, near Trinity) - free entry & nice cafe where you can have your lunch and a lovely shop for gifts.

All of the above perfect for your half day.

ticketstickets · 07/07/2023 09:06

You can take the dart to Howth, or Bray head. Both lovely walks with gorgeous views of Dublin Bay.

Radyward · 07/07/2023 10:34

Epic the emigration museum
The national gallery
Royal hosp kilmainham - fab building and modern art gallery.
Avoid the leprechaun museum . rubbish

Keykat · 07/07/2023 10:48

Have a look at Kilmainham Jail. It is a great experience/tour and I did it myself as a tourist in my own town! Bus C1, 2,3 and 4 from Pearse Street will take you within five minutes walk. Then cross the road to the lovely Hilton Hotel garden terrace for coffee and people watching. Or down the road to The Patriots pub for great grub. It is beside the IMMA (Royal Hospital) so you could combine the two.

You could also treat yourself to a one day ticket on the hop on, hop off bus which covers most of the major sites. Then you don't have to worry about finding buses and other modes of transport when you have limited time. That would fill a day for sure!

Otherwise, the suggestions above are great. Avoid Temple Bar, and sorry to repeat myself, but you did ask for tips!

AuditAngel · 12/07/2023 22:42

If you are there on a Thursday lunchtime, there is a park which has food stalls set up which we enjoyed

AuditAngel · 12/07/2023 22:45

Not very well explained, Merrion Square

And Honey Truffle, Zambrero, Pig and Heifer, Cloud Picker, Gertrude, KC Peaches, Creed, Sugarloaf (think that’s the name- Brazilian cafe)
Plus the cafes at Trinity and the Science Museum!

LadyEloise1 · 15/07/2023 11:44

Take the Dart ( light rail ) from the nearest stop to the hotel out the south coast to Greystones.
Lovely views and lots of nice cafes in Greystones.
Or get off at Dalkey village. You might bump into Bono in Finnegans pub just across from the station. You could have a pint lunch there.
Enjoy.

CrocodileOenophile · 22/07/2023 15:34

I just looked at the weather and almost cried, it will be raining cats and dogs every day of my stay.
Any of these activities good in rain, as I don't think hiking in rain will be very pleasant :(

Just wanted to thank everyone for recommendations.
I LOVED the three days we spent there.
Didnt manage to do all,the prison looked great but all booked up until end of August.
Visited the Epic museum, the Book of Kells, the Abbey for an evening performance, the Dublin Castle and the National Galleryand the whiskey tasting (lol), it was super fun. Food was random, I walked for hours just walking and walked into random places that I really liked the look of. Not having stuff planned was really cool.
Regret not going out of Dublin a it but also I think it was so tight in terms of timings and I managed to see enough and maybe next time if there is one I can do a bit more.
