2 days in Sorrento- what should we do?

We are going to a friends wedding next week, flying into Naples then hoping to take a ferry to Sorrento (would people recommend this or taxi?). We have a day either side of the wedding I’ve looked but don’t know where to start, it’s just hubby and I. ANY suggestions/tips/restaurants hugely welcome! I really want to make the most of our short time there

I wouldn't bother going to Sorrento tbh, it's overrated. On one day take a boat trip from Naples to Capri (head to Anacapri) and then on the other day take the ferry from Naples to Amalfi.

Bimblesalong · 11/06/2023 18:44

Sorrento is lovely! Just wandering around and stopping for aperol is great. You can get a hydrofoil over to Capri, catch the bus from outside the station for a trip along the Amalfi coast for not too many euros (& visit Amalfi!).

have a meal on the terrace of the Syrene hotel - great view and menu options that aren’t too expensive.

there’s a lovely bar called d’Anton on a little square (piazza Sant Antonio), next to s. Maria della Grazie - we really enjoyed drinks and snacks there.

can’t wait to go back!

LIZS · 11/06/2023 18:45

Sorrento itself is meh. Go to Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Amalfi coast or Ischia

Viviennethebeautiful · 11/06/2023 18:48

Oooh how lovely. I do love Sorento and think it’s definitely worth spending one of your days there. Visit the foreigners club. It’s a gorgeous place to drink and the food is good.
The other day it’s a toss up between Capri and the Amalfi coast road. If you don’t have a preference I would say the coast road is better if it’s super hot weather. Capri is fab but no shade.

Pollywoddles · 11/06/2023 18:51

I wouldn’t bother with Sorrento. Try Capri, Amalfi, Positano.

motherstongue · 11/06/2023 19:07

I’d book a tour of Pompeii. It was the best thing about our trip to Sorrento. A day trip to Capri is also good if you love high end shopping (and loads of crowds) the best bit for us was the mad drive (and driver) from the port to the top/shops. A leisurely cruise around Amalfi would be more relaxing.

A day in Pompeii and a day in Sorrento :)

@Viviennethebeautiful lovely you’ve said that as the foreigners club is where the wedding reception is!

how did you all get to Sorrento from Naples? I’ve read there is a regular ferry which you don’t have to pre book, has anyone tried this? I’d prefer a ferry than car if possible

@motherstongue eek I’m a nervous passenger so that’s put me off a bit!

There’s a clickety clack train from Naples to Sorrento. Cheap and takes about an hour.
I wouldn’t bother going to Naples unless you really want to - it’s a fairly poor, busy working city

Teaandchocolate2222 · 11/06/2023 20:00

Go to Il Chiostro di San Francesco which is a beautiful cloister open to the public and sat atop a cliff with beautiful views

TwigTheWonderKid · 11/06/2023 22:03

You'll need to book in advance but you should try a meal at Delfino down at Marina Grande. Great food in a wonderful setting.

For a day trip you could spend a day on Capri or get a boat down the coast to Amalfi and Positano.

motherstongue · 11/06/2023 22:30

@Cocothebear the car drive in Capri was both exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure lol 😂
we used the clickety clackety train several times from Sorrento to Pompeii and to Herculaneum too. It is slow and only 1 train at a time can traverse a long tunnel (from memory) but it goes right along the coast so great scenery. From the airport in Naples though we booked a private taxi pickup just for the ease. It was a lovely drive once out of Naples.

Useyourfork · 12/06/2023 07:03

Private boat trip to Capri and Amalfi. The chair lift in Capri is worth doing.

Or the train to visit Pompeii then a trip up the volcano 😊

Makeawish123 · 12/06/2023 12:33

I got married in Sorrento - its lovely. We did trips to Capri, Pompeii and Vesuvius. We also did the Amalfi drive which is stunning. We had a transfer to Sorrento but some friends took the train which they said was an extremely scary experience!!!

bigTillyMint · 12/06/2023 13:07

I wonder why they thought the train was scary?

OP, if you are short on time, a cab from Naples airport to Sorrento would probably be a lot quicker, but there is a bus that picks up outside the airport and drops at one of the main stations for the train to Sorrento.

ontheplayground · 12/06/2023 13:26

Sorrento is lovely - just a beautiful place to stay, wander the streets, have lemon sorbet (or limoncello) under the lemon trees in I Giardini di Cataldo.

Restaurant O'Parrucchiano La Favorita has great food in AMAZING surroundings. Need to book, though.

Would recommend going to/from Naples by ferry, rather than by road or rail.

While Sorrento is a fabulous place to be and hang out, it's fair to say that there is very little to see there as a tourist. In terms of sightseeing, I would stay in Sorrento and go on day trips from there to Pompeii (and possibly Vesuvius), and also to Capri.

Cocothebear · 12/06/2023 20:27

Thank you all so much. I’ve already reached out to the two restaurants mentioned and tried to make bookings for the evenings we are there.

out of interest for those who went to capri for the day, is there one your operator/company to travel there with?

We just got the scheduled boat from Marina Grande and took the lift up

Newuser82 · 12/06/2023 20:57

Sorrento is beautiful! We stayed there and visited Pompeii and Vesuvius. We would have love to visit capri but didn't get round to it. It's a lovely place!

TheCyclingGorilla · 12/06/2023 21:00

Been there, beautiful. But yes, the little train to Pompeii is a must. It does get super busy though!

LittleBrownBaby · 12/06/2023 21:26

Loved sorrento - just get out of the main busy bit and find one of the many little coves by the water.

Bimblesalong · 17/06/2023 08:01

If you like a bit of designer stuff make sure you have passport details with you if you go to Capri. I bought a lovely scarf and was able to claim the tax back.

I second this. Herculaneum I’m particular is incredible. Capri very expensive and very very busy. You can get a train from Sorrento to Herculaneum and Pompeii very easily. Also Naples.
