AIBU to go out to neighbour and ask them to stop?

So it’s 9.20am bank holiday Monday and a beautiful morning. DD playing on the patio and I’m just putting our baby down for nap 1.

For the last 30 minutes out neighbour has been cutting flags on and off. It’s the loudest most annoying noise I can imagine at this time on a Monday morning. We do have the windows open as it’s a lovely morning, but even closed we can hear it.

DH is cross too but thinks we shouldn’t say anything… he’s worried we will start an ongoing argument as a few weeks back, he was doing some more flag cutting at 8pm and woke both my kids up! I absolutely went out and told him to stop that time.

Would I be unreasonable to ask neighbour to stop now? I know we are up anyway with the kids, but it’s early right?

for reference, neighbours have been extensively renovating for 12 months and I think they’re desperate to finish their drive and be done with it all!

We made a swift exit and took a walk down to the town. Baby fast asleep and we managed to hit the town whilst it was still pretty quiet… so it’s not all bad.

@Landbeforetime piano? I wish my DD had the patience to even attempt to play piano. No pianos here.

@Oysterbabe - lol! Ah now I see why people are having a dig at my for my child being noisy as they are reading ‘playing on the patio’ (with Lego)as ‘playing on the piano’ 😂

Call the flag-cutting police IMMEDIATELY 🚔 🚩🏳️‍🌈

Concrete flags!!! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Gettingbysomehow · 29/05/2023 10:54

YABU but likewise I am fucking sick of the garden/DIY noise when I've got a rare day off and I wish they would drop dead.

Presume flagstone with a grinder.. Usually a no no on a bank holiday.. Check your council website. One Easter Sunday out ndn started filling a skip from an upstairs window with rubble... Soon put a stop to that!

If it’s a construction site you’re right but a distinction needs to be made between noise from construction sites and noise from DIY activities in the home. The working hours imposed on building sites would not normally be applicable to home DIY jobs. This is because people can often only undertake DIY work in the evenings and at weekends. However, this does not give people permission to annoy neighbours at all hours of the day and night. We all have to be reasonable to live together.
Keeping noisy activities caused by DIY to reasonable hours will help minimise complaints. Sensible precautions can be taken to minimise complaints from neighbours like starting after 9am. Frustrating when you have a tired child, completely but you can’t silence a whole street just because your child needs a nap. If it wasn’t a bank holiday and just a regular Monday how would it be any less annoying, yet more acceptable.

Yes, I guessed that 😄

BCBird · 29/05/2023 10:57

I personally think it is too early. I heard someone mosing theirvgrass at 8.20 am.the other day and it wound me up🙈I am up.eerly but there are people who will be waiting a lie in. 10am.would be a reasonable time IMO.i need to live in a field.

Badgeringabout · 29/05/2023 10:58

People work and sometimes need to get things done on a bank holiday. It's not early OP.

CantBeArsedOrAsked · 29/05/2023 10:58

Sigmama · 29/05/2023 09:51

Massively unreasonable, why can't they do it on a weekday when not so many people are out trying to enjoy their gardens

People who work full time mon-fri have to use BHs and weekends to get DIY stuff done.

Maybe get a piano and next bank holiday let your DC bash the keys at 9am as revenge.

TheOrigRights · 29/05/2023 11:01

I thought noisy building work was not allowed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
It sounds awful OP.

Rainbowsandfairies · 29/05/2023 11:02

Honestly?! We've had noisy work next door since the end of November! Starts at 7.30 every morning and they won't be finished until July! Sorry bit you're being a tad unreasonable X

Stripedbag101 · 29/05/2023 11:02

But it’s not early! I can imagine complaining if it’s before 9am but it’s a normal working day for a lot of people. Some schools are in today.

Rainbowsandfairies · 29/05/2023 11:04

Builders next door started on January 2nd. They don't work sat/ Sunday- thank goodness!

Blibbleflibble · 29/05/2023 11:07

OP I don't think you are being unreasonable, when I was building my garden office I never did any noisy power tool work on Sundays and Bank holidays and only half days on Saturdays. I think tht sort of thing was enforced by the council. I believe people should be able to have quiet enjoyment of their gardens especially on a sunny bank holiday weekend.

When my neighbour is doing shit like this I usually take myself and my preschooler out for the day though.

AutumnCrow · 29/05/2023 11:10

Does anyone else find smells anti-social? It's already cranking up today here in my urban paradiso: I can smell car exhausts, a bonfire of leaves, burnt spices from my absent-minded immediate neighbour, a disposable barbecue (the ones with the vile accelerant stink) and my own general air of desperation at yet again having to keep the windows closed on a day like this.

Many councils DO disallow DIY noise on Sundays and bank hols, though.

I want to agree with the others but i have no idea what it means to cut a flag.

Me neither . What’s flag cutting?

Yes... they do it on the weekend/bank holiday for the same reason the garden enjoyers don't sit out and enjoy the peace on a weekday

Cutting flagstones.

Think yourself lucky that you don’t have my neighbours; their family party started on Friday at lunchtime, went on until 3am, restarted Saturday morning at 8, finally finished at 2am this morning.
We’re on our knees, we politely asked them if they could keep the noise levels down but no response.
Our guests stuck it for an hour then went home 😢
Effing inconsiderate doesn’t begin to describe them, their neighbours the other side have a terminally ill person who’s in bed much of the time.
Next year we’ll go away, anywhere to avoid it again.

Redebs · 29/05/2023 11:24

Glad you have a pleasant, peaceful alternative, OP.
Just to add, that there is a lot of dust from cutting stones like that and so I would bring children indoors anyway, with windows closed, when that kind of activity is taking place.
Enjoy your day.
Hopefully your neighbour makes good progress and you all have a quiet summer

I would have to move if at all possible.

It’s a bank holiday people use these free days to complete works on their houses it’s just part of life ! If it was 7am then yes that’s annoying but 9.20 nah x
